Rotary cutters of the type customarily employed. in `machines for trimming the peripheries of heels` arelettch provided with a `ilurality of longitudinally curved blades aving surface and cutting edge profiles determined by the heel contours it is desired to produce. In order that such critters shall perform trimming operations properly, it is essential that all the blades of a given cutter be ground so that their cutting edges shall have exactly the same bevel and profilei The blades of rotary cutters of the abovedescribed type are generally ground by hand and the sltill of the workman is depended upon to impart to the cutting edges of the blades the same curvature as Well as the same bevel thereof. Itis obvious that tl s is a sloyv process and that even an expert who is able to grind one such blade with fair accuracy by manual control cannot take a second blade and grind it like the first. On the other hand, when a machine is relied upon to perform the operation indicated above, it is essential that provision be made for readily presenting all the blades of the rotary cutter in the same position o1 in like positions relatively to the grinding element, and in relatively moving the grinder and the blades through the same cr like paths in order that the same cutting edge bevel and curvature be imparted to the various blades.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved organization for grinding the blades of a rotary cutter in such a manner as to produce upon all of the blades the same predetermined edge bevel and curvature, Withoutin any respect depending upon the skill of the operative in determining the cutting edges imparted to the various blades. l

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention there is provided a grinding Wheel and a plurality of blade carriers for receiving a plurality of blades and presenting the blades in lthe eanie relation to the grinding Wheel at different portions of its periphery. As illustrated movement of one of the two blade carriers is transmitted to the other blade car-ier by means of connections extending between them.
In accordance with another feature of the invention, the illustrated abrading machine is adapted to operate simultaneously upon a plurality of longitudinally curved cutting blades and to impart to all of them like cutting edges having predetermined edge bevels and profiles. As illustrated the blade carriers are mounted to rock about an axis extending parallel to the axis of the grinding Wheel and all of the blades are supported so that their centers of' curvature coincide with the axis of the grinding wheel. By virtue of this arrangement the blade carrier and supported blade may be rocked, or fed, toward or Way from the periphery of the grinding wheel Without any change insult-ing in the angle of bevel produced by the grinding` operation.

This latter condition insures that the tivoblades, when their faces are fully ground to the same aspect, are also of identi# cal length, assuming of course that they haveboth been properly set up to the pins 55, and are therefore suiiiciently identical. to be used in the high speed 'trimming machinei vwithout disturbing the balance thereof. The arrangement and proportioning of the parts' 2.() and 32, above referred to, to secure the results stated, causes a movement of the axis of the shaft 30 having components both radially of the Wheel axis and peripherally. of the Wheel. The peripheral component is compensated for by the rack connection -which effects an appropriate relative rotary movement of the blade carriers.
Although the invention has been described by reference to a specific. machine, it should lze understood that., in its broader aspects, the invention is not limited to the machine selected for illustration.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. In a machine for simultaneously grind ing a pair of curved blades, a grinding Wheel, a blade carrier for rocking a curved blade to be ground about its axis of curvature to present it in a predetermined relation to the periphery of the Wheel, and a second blade carrier for rocking a like blade about its axis of curvature to present it in the saine relation to the Wheel at a different part of its periphery.
2. In a machine for sin'iultaneously grinding y a pair of curved blades, a grinding Wheel, a blade carrier for rocking a curved blade to be ground about its axis of curvature to present it in a predetermined relation to the periphery of the Wheel, and a second blade carrier for rocking a like blade about its axis of curvature topresent it in the .fame relation to the Wheel at a different part of its periphery, and connections between said blade carriers for causing movement of one blade holder to be transmitted to the other.
