Loose-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed January The object of the present invention is -to provide a loose leaf binder of the. type disclosed in our applications for patent filed November 18th, 1925, Serial Nos. 69,626 and 5 69,7 27, in which applications the device coniprises two opposed sets of holding prongs for the loose leaves, each set being carried by two mutually hingedmembers, extending longitudinally of the binder` back, which latter may be solid and rigid.` In the present invention the aforesaid hinge prong carrying members are so constructed and arranged as to lie closely adjacent, or directly upon the back of the binder so as to enable a minimum width of the book relative t the width of its leaves. The present invention also provides a construction of great simplicity, and which is strong and readily operable.
rI he invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which- K Figure 1 is a plan view of a loose leaf binder constructed in accordance with the invention, the centre of the binder being partly broken away;
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the saine;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse scction on the line 3-8, Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse section on theline 3-3, Figure 1, with the elements in such position that the prongs are sepai'atedrfor removal or insertion of' leaves.
Referring to the drawings, the binder consists' of a back member A of any suitable material. It may be of wood, aluminum or Lother metal, and solid or hollow. To the back are. secured the covers 1 in any manner desired.
The prong holding device comprises a member 2 formed as a plate extending longitudinally of the back member A and at its right hand margin formed with lingers 3 which are bent upwardly and over upon a rod 4. The margin of member 2 below rod 4 'is bent upwardly at substantially right angles to form the flange 5, so that the rod is enclosed between the lingers 3 and the said flange 5. Suitably secured to flange 5 are the inner cover leaves 6.
At each end of the back A is a vertical plate 7 Aformed at its base with a horizontal flange 7X which is rigidly secured to the back. Plate y7 is formed of' opposed aperr tures -to receive rod 4l, the rod being adapted 9, 1926L senai No. 80,174.
to rotate in said apertures when the construction is such that the rod is firmly gripped by fingers 3 and flange 5. The rod `may be held against rotation, however, if
'i desired, and in such case fingers 3 and flange 60 e 5 will be loosely bent around the rod.
The left hand margin of prong-holding member 2` is formed with a fiange 8 and is hinged at 9 to the flange 10X ofl left hand prong-holdiiig member 10. Member 10 is 65 formed with fingers 11 which are bent over upon a rod 12. The left hand margin of member 10 below rod 12 is bent to form a fiange 13, the rod '12 being gripped between this flange and the means 11. To flange 5 70 of member 2 are riveted or otherwise secured a plurality of prongs B. Secured to the flange 13 by rivets or other suitable means area plurality of prongs C directed reversely to the prongs B.
When the prong-holding members are in closed position, as shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, flanges 8 and 10x, at the hinge, ei:- tend downwardly and into a channel formed in the back A longitudinally thereof. This S0 permits the members 2, 10 to lie upon or closely adjacent the back. One end of the channel is widened to form a chamber E for the reception and operation of a latch. The said latch consists of a flat spring 14 riveted 85 at one end (at 14X) to a holding bracket 15 secured to the back. Spring 14 carries a stud 17. which is adapted to enter an aperture g in flange 8 of prong holding member 2 and thereby latch the members in closed 90 position as shown in Figure 3. Each end of rod 12 lies within a horizontal slot 18 formed in the adjacent plate 7, so that the rod and the parts connected thereto are normally held by the walls of the slot and the latch 14. When the latch is released, however, the members 2, 10 may be rocked on their hinge to assume the position shown in Figure 4, rod 12 being guided in such movement. To enableready operation of latch V14 an upward projection F is formed thereon, which forms a finger piece.
When the parts are in closed position as shown in Figures 1 and 3 inclusive and it is u desired to remove or insert leaves, finger 10a piece F is moved to the right so as to withdraw stud 17 from the opening in flange 8, whereupon the elements may be moved to the position illustrated inFigure 4.
Having described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as ollo\vs:-
l. In a binder, in combination with a back member, of a` prong holding device comprising two units, each unit holding a plurality of prongs, said units being hinged together and one member being carried by a hinge fixed relatively to the back member, a guide plate carried by the back at each end thereof, one plate being formed with a horizontal guiding slot, and a member car 1ied by one of said units and projecting Within said guide slotto be guided thereby.
2. In a binder, in combination With a back member, a prong holding device Comprising two members, each member supporting a plurality of prongs and the inner margins of said members being turned downwardly to form a flange, a hinge connecting said flanges, the flanges entering a channel formed in the back, a hinge connecting one of said prong holding members to the bach, a guide plate at each end o1" the back and having means eoacting with said prong holding members to guide the same in opening 'I and closing movements, and a latch device or holding the membersl in closed position.
In testimony whereof, We have signed our names to this specification.
