UNITED. STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
GEORGE H. WOLFRAM, 01E EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HOWARD K. MORRIS, GF NEW'ARK, NEW' JERSEY.
PEDESTAL OR SUPPORT FOR GASKETS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed. September 2, 1922.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in pedestals such as are used by undertakers at funerals for the placing of caskets thereon; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed pedestal or support for caskets, comprising a number of foldably connected sections or members, whereby the pedestal may be opened for the placing of a casket thereon, or whereby 1t may be folded or closed, when not in use.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed, as well as an ornate pedestal for the support of a casket thereon, comprising a series of articulated members or panels, which are adapted to be easily brought into such relative positions, that a supporting pedestal is quickly provided, and that the members or panels may be folded so as to provide a substantially fiat and nonbulky package when not in use.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention. With the various objects of the present invention in View, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel pedestal hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore in the details of the construction of the various parts thereof, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which is appended to and which forms an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pedestal or support, the members or panels of which are opened out for the placing of a casket thereon; Figure 2 is an elevation of the pedestal or support, with the members or panels thereof shown in their folded relation; and Figure 3 is a detail horizontal sectional representation of the articulated members or panels at one end of the pedestal,
Serial No. 585,949.
said members being represented in their opened out and supporting relation.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the complete pedestal or support, the members of which are adapted to be readily brought into a folded out or spread relation, for the support of a casket 2 thereon, as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The said pedestal or support 1 consists, essentially, of a main longitudinally disposed member 3, usually in the form of a board, which may be suitably panelled, or otherwise ornamented. At its ends 4, as shown in Figure 3, the said member 3 has its edges chamfered, as at 5 and 6.
Pivotally connected with each chamfered edge 5, at each end of the main member 3, by means of hinges 7, or other suitable means of articulation, is a member or leaf 8, which may be suitably ornamented, and the lower portion of each leaf 8 terminating I in a supporting member or foot, as 9. 75
In like manner, there is pivotally connected with each chamfered edge 6, at each end of the main member 3, by means of hinges 10, or other suitable means of articulation, a member or leaf 11, which may also be suitably ornamented, and the lower portion of each of said members or leaves 11 may also terminate in a supporting member or foot, similar to the foot 9 of each leaf 8.
From an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, it will readily be seen, that the various members of the pedestal may be easily and quickly brought into opened out relation for the support of the casket thereon, as will be evident from an inspection of Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings, and when the casket is removed, the articulated or hinged members or leaves can be easily folded back in abutting relation against the opposite faces of the main member 3, so as to produce a small package, which can be readily picked up and carted away, and stored in a minimum space for future use.
I claim:-
A bier comprising a body panel vertically disposed, a pair of Wing panels hinged to each end of said body panel and adapted to 5 extend therefrom in V-form, and the Wing panels of each pair beingadapted to be folded against opposite sides of the body panel with the wing panels on each side ol the body panel in end-to-end arrangement in the same plane. 10
In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of August, 1922.
GEORGEH. VOLFRAM.
