C. S. WHIDDEN WINDSHIELD REGULATOR INVENTOR. Charles J. Wbz'dden,
Filed March 194 1926 A TTORNE Y Patented 11, 1927 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 6
CHARLES S. W'HIDDEH, '01! INDIAHABOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGHOR T0 ZENI'IE IETAII COMPANY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, DIDIA'NA, A CORPORATION OF IIIDIANA.
WTN'DSHIELD REGULATOR.
Application med Iarch 19, 1926. Serial 110. 95,901.
The object of my invention is to produce an efficient and effective apparatus-by means of whichthe window sash of Windshields of closed body automobiles maybe readily manipulated for ventilation' The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the'rear face of my improved windshield;
F ig. 2 is a vertical section on a scale somewhat larger thanthat of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 on thescale somewhat larger than Fig. 2,;
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4.-1 of Fig. 1 on the scale of Fig. 3.
In-the drawings 10 indicates a main frame of a size and shape to form a part of the closed body of an automobile. Hinged at 11 in frame 10 is a window sash 12 the lower rail 12' of which is arched, as is usual, to conform approximately to the arch of the hood. At each lower corner of sash 12 I- provide a bracket 13 to which is pivoted an arc-shaped rack bar 14; having teeth on its inner curve.
At each lower corner of frame 10 I provide a housing 15* in which is mounted a pinion 16 and the outer end of a shaft 17 on which pinion 16 is secured, each pinion meshing with the teeth of a rack bar and the rack bar being guided through suitable openings 18 in the casing 15.
Each rack bar is convemently held in mesh with its pinion bya roller 19 carried at the free end of a spring 20 mounted in casing 15 and engaged by a temper screw 21 so that the force of the spring may be adjusted.
The inner ends of the two shafts 17 are non-rotatively associated with a spiral gear 22 by any suitable means such for instance as a diametric slot 23 in each hub of the gear 22 and a corresponding diametrictongue' on the inner end of each shaft. Gear 22 is journaled in .a casing- 2 1 in which is also journaled a shaft 25 carrying a spiral gear 26 meshing with gear 22. Casing 24 is mounted in the bottom rail 10 of'fl'ame 10 and shaft 25 is projected at its rear end through casing 24 and has-secured thereto an operating head or knob 27 which may be readily grasped and manipulated by the occupant of the car.
The shafts 17 lie in suitable passages formed in the frame rail 10' and are hidden from view.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a supporting frame and a windshield sash hingedly mounted therein, of a pair of 90 degree spiral gears journaled in a suitable casing and mounted in the lower frame bar, two
pinion casings mounted one in each lower I pinion casings mounted one in each lower corner of the frame, a shaft connecting each pinion with .one of the spiral gears, means by which the other spiral gear may be manipulated from the inner face of theframe, a pair of racks each attached at one end to the swinging sash and each meshing with one of the pinions, and a spring pressure device mounted in each pinion casing and engaging the adjacent rack tohold the same in mesh with its pinion. M Y
In witness whereof, I, CHARLES S. WHIDDEN, have hereunto set my "hand at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 17th day of March, A. D. one thousand nine hundred.
six.
and twenty 9 CHARLES S. WHIDDEN.
