TOILET-PAPER FIXTURE.
Application filed July 10,
This invention relates particularly to a device adapted to the purpose of holding a roll of toilet paper; and the primary object is to provide a device of simple and improved construction which operates in an improved manner.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing in whichv Fig. 1 represents an elevational view of the improved toilet paper holder, showing the device adapted for supporting two rolls of paper; Fig. 2 represents a rear elevational view of the same; Fig. 3, a horizontal sectional view taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. i, a broken vertical section taken as indicated at line i of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a broken vertical section taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6, a view partly in section and partly in elevation of a modified form of trunnion.
While the device illustrated is shown adapted to support two rolls of paper, it will be understood that the device may be made.
' in suitable form to support a single roll of paper.
In the illustration given, A represents a supporting plate. or base which is adapted to be attached to a vertical wall; B, B, represent bracket-arms supported by the plate A and arranged in pairs; and B, B represent spring-pressed bearings or trunnions mounted in the bracket-arms.
The supporting plate A preferably is stamped from sheet-metal, being suitably bowed or paneled and provided with a mar ginal flange 1 which is adapted to bear against the wall. The plate is further provided with screw-receiving perforations 2.
The bracket-arms B are preferably made hollow, as shown. The standards may be drawn into the hollow form shown by suitable drawing operations. Each standard is thus provided with side walls 3 and an edge wall 4:. v
The base plate is provided with pairs of vertical perforations 4: through which the standards are inserted from the rear. The rear ends of the standards are provided with flanges 5, which bear against the rear surface of the plate A. The flanges 5 are spotwelded to the plate A. In practice, the standards B taper very slightly from their bases to their outer ends. The standards are 1922. Serial No. 573,953.
cup-shaped member provided with an end wall 7, a conical wall 7*, and a flange 7". The trunnions are normally held in their projected position by means of coil springs 8. These springs are confined between the hollow trunnions and the opposite side wall of the bracket. Preferably, a cup-shaped member or disk 9 is inserted between the spring and the outer wall of the bracket after the spring has been introduced. The thickness of the metal of the cup 9 is such that the hollow trunnion can not be wholly forced from its socket after the assembling operation has been performed. Thus, the apparatus cannot be put. out of order.
The flanges 7 of the trunnion 7 are made non-circular. In fact, the flanges 7 are made to conform for a distance to the edge wall of the bracket-arms, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the trunnion can not turn about its own axis.
0 represents the usual paste-board tube or roll on which the. toilet paper roll C, indicated by dotted lines, is mounted. The paste-board tubes C are, in practice, made quite accurate in length and diameter. The ends of the tubes receive the taper surfaces '7 of the trunnions, the springs serving to force the trunnions into the ends of the tubes O with suffioient force to produce a desired friction between the toilet paper roll and the trunnions. The tube C turns on the trunnions as the paper is withdrawn but there is sufficient friction between the trunnions, and the paper roll to prevent the roll from turning too freely, thus insuring economy.
The improved device is of exceedingly staunch construction, presents a design of substantial and pleasing appearance, and is well adapted to its purpose. The trunnions may readily be retracted or sheathed to permit the paper roll to be inserted, after which the trunnions will be forced into the.
ends of the tube of the roll. In case the ends of the tube C should expand in service, the plunger-like trunnions will be projected further inwardly so as to maintain the desired friction. The feature of having both of the taper trunnions sheathabl'e is a desirable one, as this facilitates the insertion of the roll of paper, inasmuch as the roll can be inserted by a straight movement. The roll can not be removed until'after the paper has been exhausted.
While the device shown is adapted to receive and support two rolls of toilet paper, it will be understood that the base plate may be suitably designed to support one or any desired number of rolls of paper.
In F 6, B represents a modifi d form of trunnion, which may be used instead of the trunnions B. In the modified form, 10 represents a cylindrical portion which enters the roll and 10 represents a frustoconical portion adapted to give the necessary wedging effect to produce the desired friction between the roll and trunnion. This form may be used to give a good suppor to the paper-roll without developing excessive friction.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary liinitati as should be understood therefrom.
What I regard as new, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, s:
