rlhis invention relates to transmission locks, and is illustrated as 'embodied in a sliding-gear selective transmission 'for an automobile. Y
An object of the invention is toprovide an inexpensive but effective lock 'for the transmission. ln one desirable arrangen'ient, the key-controlled locking bolt isconnected tothe lever, to move with 'the lever, and when locked engages a part 'ofthe transmission to hold the lever stationary, and .preferably in engagement with both of the shifter forks or their equivalents. In the forms shown'in the drawings, the 'lever 'carries a plate which serves as a guide V'fortlre locking bolt, the bolt being movable toengage a stationary plate orfthelike, or to 'engage `one Aorgbo'th of the shifter;forl@l A ther objects and features of theinvention, including a. novel arrangement preventing unauthorized removal of the pedestal carrying the gear-'shift lever, and various desirable particular constructions, will be apparent from the following description of the illustrative embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings, in'vvhich: p

Figure 9 lis a vertical transverse section through a fourth transmission, showing the lever vand lock infront elevation; and` Figure l() is a horizontal section on the line lO-lOfcf Figure 9.
Each 'of 'the transmissions shown includes a 'casing 2O Vi'nclcsing :change-speed gearing 22, illustrated 'as being of the sliding selective type, Yshifted vby shifter forks 24 and 26 Vhaving notches y2S for the 'end of Va gearshifting control leveiBO. The forks 24 and l26 are yieldingly held in any selected posi'- tion byyieldmg pawl's B2, which also 'serve `further described below, these parts or their vequivalents may be of any desi-red construction.
The gear-shifting controlleve-r BU-of the firsttran'smission isluniversallly mounted o'n a tloin'e' or `pedestal'40. A 42, having a concave flower surface fitting over the top of the pedestal, is secured to the lever, as by a pin 44, and a plate 46 on the inside of thepedestal is held against its'ifnner concave `surface by a spring455.v 'The bottom of the pedestal flits within 4`a 'flan-ge 50 ofthe casing 20, supported by a ledge 52 and secured to the ledge by Abolts or screws 54. A plate 56, having a central opening for the control lever, lits Vwithin flange 50 below the pedestal, 'and is separately'secured to ledge '52 bybolts or screws 58.v This plate has fingers 60, sprung upwardly'to overlap a plate 62 secured to the gearshift Vlever by a pin or the like 64. Plate 56 `and fingers 6() permit plate 62 to move in substantially its own plane, and' thusV permit universal movement of the Y*gear-shift lever, but prevent withdrawal of the lever aindre'inoval ofdome 40,l even after the removal of bolts or screws 54,`by a 'thief attempting in this mannerto secure access to the lock described below. The bottom flange of` the pedestal() prevents access to bolts or. screws 58, and flange 50 prevents prying out the pedestal and plate v56 by means of a cold chisel.
lPlate l62 servesas a guide for a vertically movable locking bolt 66, urged upwardly to unlocked position by a spring 68, and depressible to enter an opening in plate 56 to hold the gearshifting control lever in neutral, and preferably in a position Where it projects into both notches 28. The bolt is controlled by a lock barrel 70, operated by a key 2 to Withdraw a latch 74 and allow it to seat in either of two recesses 76 or 78 formed in part 4t2. It will be seen that bolt 66 is connected to lever 30 and moves therewith. Barrel 70 is held against angular movement by a stationary pin or projection SO entering a slot 82 in its side.
The transmission shown in Figures A, 5, and 6 differs from that described above, in that flange 50 of casing 20 is omitted, plate 62 is not pinned to lever 30 but is held in sliding engagement with plate 56 by spring` 66, and fingers 66 on plate 56 are omitted. ln this transmission, also, the lock is at one side of the control lever, instead of behind it. rlhe third transmission (Figures 7 and 8) differs from the first and second, in that bolt 66, instead of entering an opening` in plate 56, locks the transmission by enter- -ing' a recess formed. half in each of the shifter forks 24, 26. In the fourth transmission (Figures 9 and 10) the bolt enters a recess in fork 26. ln the third and fourth transmissions, plate 62 is directly slidably supported on plane upper surfaces formed on the lever-engaging parts of the shifter forks.
lVhile several illustrative embodiments have been described in detail, it is not our intention to limit the scope of the invention to those particular embodiments, or other- Wise than by the terms of the appended claims.
