Our invention relates to paper" cutting presses in which bundles of paper are trimmed and cut as inmaking upbook paper and many'otherbranches of the arts.
The problem of cutting a large bundle of paper to a uniform trim is one of holding the paper tightly and immovably while the knife is brought down through the bundle. It is customary and necessary to use very heavy pressures on the clamp bars for holding the paper in position during cutting, and unless the paper is uniform there is chance of slippage of the leaves on each other, when enough pressure is applied. Thus, when the paper is not uniform, which is a more frequent occurrence at this time than formerly was the case, due to the high speed production of today, the paper bundle will not compress equally under the clamp bar pressure, but will form humps in some places which act to distort the bundle under the bar, and also to prevent a distributed application of pressure to the paper.
It is the object of our invention to avoid this defect which we have observed in paper cutters and this we accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.

We have not shown a full paper cutting machine as our invention can be applied to paper cutters in general.
We show a cutter knife 1 and a clamp bar 2. The bar and knife are movable independently to and from a bundle of paper on the bed of a cutting machine with the lgnife moving along the edge of the clamp The lower edge of the clamp bar is formed with its side away from the knife, recessed to which is mounte the retaining plate 5. The bar is formed with a lengthwise bea'l or series of knobs 6, and the plate 5 has a like bead or knobs 7 The bolts 8 secure the plate to the rib and in the recess that is closed at the rear by the plate 5 is set a block or bar 8 of resilient material such as solid rubber. I
The block or bar 8 is recessed at 8 to perelevation of the same d said clamping surface when mit of its being: forced back. into thepocket; under pressure; and ischanneled. at. 8 'to engage the headstone the inner face'wof; the clampbarenchand theginner-face'of the retaining plate.
The base of the rubber block which extends clear along the clamp bar, either as an individual piece or a number of pieces abutted against each other, is provided with a leather facing preferably of two plies of heavy leather 9. This leather is cemented and screwed to the rubber, and is thus permanently attached in place, and its lower area is suflicient to project from the rubber or recessed portion of the clamp bar, across the portion 10 thereof that is left solid, and along which the knife moves in the actof passing into the paper bundle.
The operation ofthe knife and clamp bar will be the usual one in paper cutting machines. When the clamp bar comes down on the paper, the bundle is pressed and the rubber block is compressed up into the recess provided therefor. The unevenness of the paper in thickness will be compensated for by the resilient block, and the flexible leather. The portion of the paper nearest the knife will be held down tightly without resilience except such as is present in the leather facing, since the leather will abut fiat against the clamping surface of the part 10 of the clamp bar.
Preferably the rubber block will cover more than one half of the lower surface of the clamp bar, and we find that the device obviates all difiiculties due to uneven composition of paper, in the cutting and trimming operation.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a paper cutter the combination with a clamp bar and knife, of a resilient engaging surface at the clamping surface of the bar comprising a compressible insert therein, adapted to be forced up level with the the clamp bar is depressed into a bundle of paper, said compressible insert having a paper engaging surface secured thereto that covers substantially the entire clamping surface of the bar.
2. In a paper cutter the combination with a clamp bar and knife, said clamp bar having its surface recessed, on the side away from the cutting line, and a resilient block set into said recess, and a flexible facing for said resilient block adapted to cover also the paper engaging face portion of the clamp bar that is not recessed.
3. In a paper cutter the combination with a clamp bar and knife, said clamp bar having its surface recessed, on the side away from the cutting line, and a resilient block set into said recess, and a leather facing on the blockarranged to substantially cover the entire paper engaging surface of the clamp bar structure inclusive of the block.
4. In a paper cutter, a knife, and a clamp bar adapted to he brought down against bundles of paper, said bar having a portion of its lower edge cut away, a plate mounted on the side of the bar and forming a recess together with the bar, for a resilient insert, a compressible resilient block mounted in said recess, and a facing of flexible nature mounted over the rubber block, and of a shape to cover also the portion of the lower edge of clamp bar that is not cut away.
