'WILLTAM B. MoGEORG-E, OF GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO. THOMAS S. HALL, OF GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT.
DEVICE FOR LOCATING OUTLET BOXES OR WALL CASES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed April '23, 1926. Serial No. 104,105.
My invention relates to a device for properly locating and to at the same time properly dimension the apertures in walls and baseboards for the reception of outlet boxes or wall cases of the electrical trade, and has for one of its objects the .provision of asim-' ple and inexpensive device for this purpose which will effect a material saving in time and eliminate improper locating of the box.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a simple inexpensive device which is so constituted that no particular amount of skill is required to use the same, and in which the aperture for the outlet box will always be properly located with respect to the baseboard and floor and of the proper dimensions.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the character described which may be made up in a. metal stamping, for instance, so as to reduce the cost of manufacture to a minimum, and in which a part of the device is adjustable so as to permit of the same being adjusted for baseboards of diflerent depths, to insure that the aperture for the outlet box will always be located centrally of the board.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 shows the same in perspective and in use;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, B designates a baseboard, and 1 a rectangular guide member, comprising side members or legs 2 and 3, and a bridge or connecting member 4:- The bridge member is provided with an overhanging flange or hp 5, which is adapted to engage the top of the baseboard when the device is in use to suspend the same therefrom, as illustrated in Fig. 1. lhe legs 2 are bent over upon themselves to form guideways 6.
Mounted in the guideways 6 is a template 7 in the form of a rectangular member provided with a central opening or aperture 8 of a size corresponding to the outlet boxes or wall cases which are to be mounted, the two side members 9 and 10 of this template sliding in the guidewa-ys 6. The template maintains itself frictionally in its guideways so as to remain in ad usted position,
but permitting the template to be moved to accommodate the device to base'boards of different depths. The edges of the central aperture 8 are bent up at right angles to the rear face of the template, to provide out,- standing flanges 11, so that when the device is in use the face of the template may be struck with a hammer or other tool and the flanges will make an impression in the baseboard to outline the aperture which it is de sired to cut therein.
In addition to the foregoing construction, the sides of the template are 'grad'uatedas indicated at 12, So that when the lower ends of the legs 2 and 3 register with these graduations, the template will be centered with respect to the baseboard, these graduations conveniently corresponding to the height in inches of the baseboard.
lVhil-e 'I have described in detail "the construction of one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that these details may be varied, if so desired, within the purview of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A device for properly locating outlet boxes or wall cases and the like, comprising in combination a guide member, and a template slidabl'e relatively thereto, said template being provided with an opening the size of the outlet box and provided with graduations co-opcrable with said guide member, to set the template with respect to the guide member in proper position to locate the box.
2. A device for properly locating outlet boxes or wall cases and the like, comprising aguide member having a pair of spaced side members or legs providing guideways, and a bridge joining the said legs and provided with an outstanding flange. a template hav ing side members slidable in the guideways provided by the legs of the-guide member, said template being provided With'an opening the size of the box or Wall case to be positioned, and with graduations co-operable with the legs of the guide member to properly position the template with respect to a baseboard when the flange on the guide member is in engagement with the edge of a baseboard.
3. A device for properly locating outlet boxes or wall cases and the like, comprising in combination a guide member having spaced side members or legs providing guideways, and a bridge member connecting said legs, there being a flange on said bridge member adapted to suspend the guide member from the member to which the outlet box is to be applied, a template the sides of which are received by said guidewavs, said templat being provided With an opening corresponding in size to the outlet box to be positioned, said template being slidable along said guideways to properly position the template opening With respect to the member Which is to receive the outlet box.
4-. A device for locating outlet boxes or Wall cases and the like, comprising in combination two parallel spaced apart legs providing guideways, and a bridge member joining said legs, there being flange on said bridge member a template slidably mounted in said guideways and provided with a rectangular opening corresponding in size to the box to be located, said opening lying parallel to said flange, and means on the template co-operable With the legs of the guide member to determine the setting of the template with respect to the guide member flange, to center the template opening with respect to a baseboard or the like engaged by said flange.
A device for locating outlet boxes or Wall cases and the like, comprising in combination a guide member for providing guideways, there being a flange along one edge of said guide member at right angles to the guideways by which the guide member may be suspended, a template in said guide- Ways and provided With an opening corre-y spending in size to the outlet box or Wall case to be located, said template being slidable along said guideways to properly position the opening in said template with respect to said suspending flange, and flanges on one face of the template about the edges of the opening therein for the purpose set forth.
6. A device for locating outlet boxes or Wall cases and the like, comprising in combi nation a sheet metal member having a connecting bridge and a pair spaced parallel legs extending from one long edge of the bridge member, said legs be 1' bent over upon themselves longitudinall 0 provide guideways, the longitudinal of ti bridge member remote from the legs being provided with a flange arojecting trom one face oi the bridge member, template mounted in said guideways and l'rictionally held therein, said template being provided by the opening corresponding in size to the outlet box or Wall casing to be locatedx flanges about the edges of said opening and extending rearwardly from the rear face of said template for the purpose set forth, there being graduations on the template cooperable with the legs or side members of the guide member for properly positioning the template opening with respect to the bridge flange.
