The present invention relates to a cleaner for the bowls of smoking pipes and has for'` struction, reliable in operation, possessing the capacity for long and continued service, not likelyV to easily become out of order, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

With t-he above and numerous other'objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in Vcertain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully `described and claimed.`

Referring to the .drawings in detail, `it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the cleaner which is provided with a longitudinally extending bore 2 Vhaving an enlarged portion 3 at its bottom end and terminating in an enlarged recess 4 at its upper end. A plurality of slots 5 are provided in the lower end of the body and radiate from the larger portion 3 of the bore 2. .A handle bar (i pierces a. transversely disposed opens ing provided in the upper portion of the body 1 and is provided with a transversely extending bore 7 in registry with the bore 2. A shaft 8 pierces the bores 2 and 7 and eX- tends through the recess 4 and through the enlarged portion 3.

An enlarged threaded portion 9 is provided on the shaft 8 within the enlarged portion 3 of the bore 2 and is threadedly engaged therewith. At the lower end of the shaft 8, there is provideda head 10 having an enlargement 11 at the lower end-thereof. A knob 12 is fixed on the upper end of the shaft by means of a pin 13. This knob moves in the recess 4. A plurality of scraper blades 14 are pivoted on a ring 15 disposed in a groove 1G provided eXteriorly of the body 1 intermediate the ends of the slots 5. There is one blade movable in each slot 5. The interior edge of each blade is provided adjacent its lower end with an inclined surface 16 and adjacent its upper end with a notch or overhanging portion 17. The enlargement 11 is adapted to engage the inclined surfaces 16 while the upper end of the head 10V is adapted to engage the overhanging portions 17.- i

Y From the above detailed description, it will be seen that by turning the knob 12 in one direction, the shaft y 8 will move downwardly, causing the enlargement 11 to engage the .inclined 'surfaces' 16"v thereby spreading the scraper blades, outwardly.

By rotating the knob 12in the opposite direction, the shaft 8 will be moved upwardly, causing the upper end of the head 10 to engage the overhanging portion 17, thereby swinging the scraper blades 14 inwardly.

The bottom of the recess 4 limits the movement of the shaft 8 in one direction,

since it forms anabutment for the bottom end ofthe knob 12. Theshoulder formed by the upper end of the enlarged bore 3 with the bore proper 2 forms an abutment for the upper end of the enlarged threadedk portion 9 of the shaft 8, thereby limiting the upward movement of this shaft.

It is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of this invention will now be clearly` understood without a more detailed description thereof. It will be apparent that by placing the bladed end of the contrivance in the pipe bowl and then vspreading the blades, said blades will engage the cups of crust formed in the bowl So that by rotating theI whole contrivance, the bowl will be cleaned. This process may be continued until all of -the crust is removed, or as much of it is removed as may be desired. Y

The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.

It will be apparent that numerous changes in the 4details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed, or sacrificing any of 'its advantages. i

Havingy thus described my invention, what l. claim as new is l. A pipe cleaner of the class described including an elongated body having' a longitudinally extending bore and slots radiating' from the bore at the lower end ot the body` blades pivoted in the slots and provided with slant-ing inner edges, a spreader bar slidable through the bore so that it may be moved for engaging' the slanting edges ot the blades to spread them, 2. A pipe cleaner oit' the class described including' an elongated body having a longitudinally extending bore and slots radiating t'rom the bore at the lower end oi the body, blades pivoted in the slots and provided with slanting` inner edges. and a shaft threaded thru the bore and having' an enlargement for engaging the slanting edges ot the blades to spread them a part and also provided with' a shoulder i'or engaging' notches provided in the blades for contracting them. 1

A pipe cleaner ot' the class described including an elongated body proi'*i(.led with a bore and slots, a shaft threaded'through the bore and provided with 'a head, a plurality of blades pivotally mounted in the slots and engageable by the head te spread the blades apart upon the movement ot the shaft in one direction, the end ot the bot y being' provided with a reeess, a knob fixed to the shaft and movable in' the recess, `the bottom of said recess limitingl the movement oit said knob in one direction.

4. A pipe cleaner of the class described includingan elongated body having a longitudinally extending bore, the rlower portion ot which is enlarged and provided With slots in extension of the bore and Lei-rees:
