JOSEH R. WARNER, F THDMASTON, CGNNECTICUT.
POCKETKNIFE.
Application filed October 1'7, 1925. Serial No. 63,222.
LA handle scales.
One object of this invention is to provide a pocket knife of the above nature in which additional means are provided for securely anchoring the handle scales to the lining plates.
A further object is to provide a device of this nature which will be simple in construe tion, inexpensive to manufacture, ornamental in appearance, and very ecient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawings, one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
Fig, 1 represents atop plan view of the pocket knife.
Fig, 2 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side sectional view of the same, on an enlarged scale, said section being taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the knife, taken along the line i-4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, the knife blade being shown in partly open position.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals 10 and 11 indicate a pair of metal lining plates, said plates being spaced apart by a back spring 12 and a blade 11a. The plates 10 and 11 are connected by a pair of end rivet pins 13 and 14 and a side pin 1,5, the pins 14- and 15 passing through the back spring 12. The rivet pins 13 and 14 are of such a length as to extend slightly beyond the outer surfaces of the lining plates 10 and 11, whereby the outer ends of said pins may be headed over onto square undercut beveled washers 16 and 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Each of the lining plates'l() and 11 is providedintermediate its ends with a pair of lateral lugs and 19 pressed out from the 'im .all at plates@ The is and 19 are adapted to engage in suitable recesses formed in the inside surfaces of a pair of handle scales 2O and 21 respectively, as clearly shown in Fig. 8. By means of this construction, the handle scales will be very securely anchored upon the'lining` plates, and it will be impossible for said scales to move laterally out of position.
The handle scales 20 and 21 are preferably constructed of wood and are cut away at their opposite ends to form shoulders 22 and 23. as clearly shown in Fig. 3. i
In order to reinforce the rivet pins 13 and 141- so as to more securely lock the lining plates 10 and 11 into a rigid frame, and also to securely lock the handle scales in position, the ends of said knife are provided with bolsters 24 and 25. The holsters 24 and 25 are formed by placing the knife in a mold or matrix and then molding a suitable metal around the ends thereof, and flush Ywith the handle scales.
It will be clear from this construction that the bolsters thus formed will complete the ends of the knife. It will also be seen that during the molding operation, the metal will flow around the undercut beveled washers and will lill up the shoulders 22 and 23,
specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without-departing from its spirit.V In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the inventioin what is claimed as new, and for which, it .is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
In a pocket knife, a pair of side lining plates, said plates being spaced by a back spring and aknife' blade, said lining plates b orinectedl at' their ends b pair' of sind rivet litvi scales, and two pairs of holsters molded over the ends of said lining scales for reinforcing said rivet pins and looking` said handle scales in position.
In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signatureto this specification.
JOSEPH R. VARNER.
