DEVICE FOIL WRAPPING RIBON AROUND WIRE FRAMES.
Application led December 18. 1925.
My invention has for its object the provision of a simple and economical device for wrapping ribbon or the like around Wire and other articles, such as Wire frames of lamp shades.
I accomplish this object by means of a reel housed in a case and adapted to Wind up the ribbon or the like, the unwinding of the reel being restrained by a brake so that when the case is passed from hand to hand around the Wire tobe Wrapped, the ribbon unwound therefrom will be Wrapped tightly around the Wire. l
In order that the nature of my invention may be clearly understood, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I at present prefer to carry the invention into prac tice, and then point out the various features of the invention in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which like parts are designated by the same numbers in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a ribbon Wrapping device embodying my invention as I now prefer to carry it into practice.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same through line 2 2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan vievv or the same With the cover removed, a ribbon being shown ready to kbe Wound up.
6 designates the reel on Which I now prefer to Wind the ribbon and from which the ribbon 5 is unwound when it is to be Wrapped around Wire frames and the like.
The reel preferably consists of a bobbin 7 made of metal or other suitable material, and having a longitudinal slot 8 therein for a purpose Which will hereinafter appear. At each end of the lbobbin project journals 8 and 9, journal 9 being in this embodiment extended for apurpose Which will be later explained.
The reel 6 is rotatably supportedrby means of the journals 8 and 9 in bearing holes 10 and 11 in the end of a case 12. I noW prefer to use as a case a cylinder 13 having one end open and adapted to be closed by a cap 14. The case 12 is slotted as at 15 for a purpose which Will shortly be described.
It is to be understood that the case may Serial No. 76,254.
- be in any form desired, such as for example a Wire cage, and is not to be limited to the specific construction described. The bobbin, also, may have a rectangular, circular, or any other desired cross-section.
When the device is to be used, it first becomes necessary to Wind up the ribbon on the reel. I accomplish this by first aligning 'the slots 8 and 15 radially and then inserting an end of' the ribbon through the slot 15 in the case and the slot 8 in the reel. Ey means of a handle 16, removably attached in any suitable manner to the extended journal 9, the reel is rotated and the ribbon Wound thereon.
To enable the ribbon to be Wrapped evenly and tightly around the Wire frame and to prevent the idle spinning of the reel With the consequent loose Wrapping of the ribbon around the Wire frame, I prefer to use a spring brake 17 attached in any suitable manner to the reel 6. In the present embodiment of my invention the brake 17 is preferably extended radially from the bobbin to the case and then circumferentially around the inside of the case against which it bears elastically. A large braking surface is thus presented.
When the ribbon is being univound from the reel, it is evident that suoli unvvinding Will be restrained by said brake, and thus the loose Wrapping of the rib-bon around the Wire occasioned by the idle spinning of the reel Will be prevented. My invention is not restricted to the use of the spring brake described, as other braking means may be em ployed with equally good results.
In Wrapping the ribbon 5 in the case 12 around a Wire frame, the case is merely passed from hand to hand around the Wire, the spring brake rendering unnecessary any pulling taut of the ribbon. Y
It vvill be understood that my device is not restricted to the use of ribbon alone. It can be used for tape or other materials equally Well.
It Will thus be seen that I have provided an economically constructed device adapted to Wrap ribbon, tape or the like tightly around Wire frames, rods, tubing, etc., very easily and efliciently.
It is evident that many changes may be made in the speciio construction and arrangement described Without departing from the boundaries of my invention as defined by thek following claim I claim as my invention:
A device for Wrapping ribbon around Wire comprising a case, a, ribbon reel in the JOHN WV. BLEVINS.
