E. G. ROWLEY TYPEWRITING MACHINE Dec. 14'

Dec. 14 1926.
E. G. ROWLEY TYPEWRITING MACHINE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed 001:. 5. 1923 35 by'en'gagement with the under faces of the .vided a pair of links or rock-arms 24, one at 7 ing rock-shaft 27 ,which is encircledby, a
each side of the machine, and each provided with a stub shaft 25, on which rests a yoke 26 formed in the corresponding side piece 19 of the shift-frame; the links'24 being fast at their rear ends to a transversely=extendspring, not shown, so tensioned as to assist in lifting the shift-frame to uppercase.
For lifting the shift frame, there is provided, at one side of the keyboard, a shiftkey 29, fulcrumed on a short shaft30 on a standard 31 rising from a cross-tie 32, which connects the sides of the mainframe. The shift-key-lever is provided with a rearward extension 33 underlying the elbowed end 34 of a sheet-metal rock-arm 35 fast on the shaft 27. "It follows that, when the shiftkey 29 is depressed, its rearward extension 33 lifts the rock-arm35, thereby rocking the arms 24 upward'so that the stub-shafts 25 on, the latter will lift the shift-frame. The
shift-key 29 may be depressed until the shift-. frame is arrested by inwardly-turned heels 36 thereon, one on each side plate l9fthereof, and'such heels strike set screws 37 on the turned-over ends 38 of'arms or brackets 39 secured to a cross-piece 40 which connects the side plates of the 'main frame at the lower'rea'r portion of the latter. When the shift-frameis shifted to this'position, the
types, 41 on the type-barsll are effective to print, instead of the normally effective lower-case types42. Set screws 43, one at each side of the machine, in the brackets 39,
heels or flanges 36, arrest the shift-frame in normal lower-case position when it is al-' lowed by gravity to return to-such position upon. 'releasejof' the shift-key.
The character-keys 10, when actuated, move charac-ter-key-levers 44 around a common fulcrum-plate 45, supported on the cross-tie '40. Each key-lever 44, when actuated,-moves against the tension of'a spring 46 to swing a bell-crank, not shown, and,
. through the latter,'to pull on a-link, not
shown,to cause its type-bar 11' to swing. lo,.cause]the carriage to move from one letter-space position to another, while typing, there is provided a universal bar 47, supported; ijby means of arms .48 on a 'rock-' shaft 49.; with which universal bar thekey levers engage, when depressed, by means of shoulders or lugs 50 onthe key-levers. The rock-shaft '49 is journaled in brackets 51,
' one at each end thereof, secured to the cross- 'bar 40, An arm, not shown, 'on the universal bar connects with and operates escapement mechanism, not. shown, for controlling the letter-feed movements of the carriage; so that, upon each depression of any letter or numeralkey-lever, the carriage may have a letter-space advance under the action of the spring-drum. Escapement mechanism suitable for this purpose is shown in United States'Letters Patent to Dobson, No. 1,417,-
304, dated May 23, 1922.
Except when the ribbon is to remain in neutral position, as',for instance, in stencihng, the ribbon is to be vibrated upon each operation of a character-key, whether the platen is in lower or upper case-shift position; and, in accordance with the present invention, a bichrome ribbon maybe employed, in which event the ribbon may have a variable vibration to presentone orthe other of the color-zones thereof to the printing point. The ribbon 52, comprising colorzones 53Qa'nd 54, and wound upon spools, not shown, is threaded through the eyes 55 of a ribbon-carrying vibrator, which comprises arms 56, connected at their lower ends to form a U-shaped structure 57.. The ribhon-vibrator has up-and-down movement on a 'gulde 58, secured by screwsf59 to a rail 60, which is unitary with the front carriageguide-rail 16of the shift-frame, and which "depends vertically from the forward edge of the latter, and extends lengthwise of the vibrator is connected to one end of a lever .67. The lever. 67'eXtends right-ward, lengthwise .of the platen, and at its right-hand end has an arcuate slot 68 thereinto receive a pin 69 on a shift lever 7 Opivotedat 71 to a plate or bracket 72, secured by screws 73 to the shift-frame front rail 60, and by screws 74 to the right-hand side plate of the shift-frame. The lever 67 is therefore,'in
effect, fulcrumed on the plate or bracket 72.
The effective arm of the leveris, however, an arm of variable length, in order that, when the lever is actuated, by means present- 1y to be described, it may eifecta variable throw. of I the ribbon-vibrator to present either'of the black orrred zones of therib bon to the printing-point.
In Figure 3, the shift lever 70, carrying the fulcrum-pin 69 of the lever, is shown in its extreme right-hand position with the pin 69 at the outer end of the slot 68. In this I position of the lever 70,the lever 67, when swung up, will have such movement as is sufficient to present the upper or blackcolor zone 53 of the ribbon to the printing-point. In Figure 4, the lever 70 is shown in its extreme left-hand position with the fulcrum-pin 69 of the lever 67 at the left-hand end of the slot 68. In this'latter position of the lever 7 O, the lever .67, when swung on of a ty e-ke by the fellowing'means; On
