` ronca;
Application led May 1,
This invention relates to jostling resistant and self-righting torches.
This invention has utility when incorporated in roadway excavation marking torches as subject to disturbance by traflic.
Referring to the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a torch 'in accordance with the disclosure herein 'as in normal position;
Fig. 2 is a view of the torch of Fig. 1 as disturbed and about to swing toward selfrighting or stable position of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view of the torch of Fig. 1,)with portions broken. away, the scale being enlarged; w
Fig. 4 is a distributed view of the wick enveloping nipple and bushing; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the loading element for the torch.
Reservoir` member 1 is shown herein as of a base restricting form inwardly extending with annular re-entrant beading 2 as a holder for loading 3 herein shown as a cast plate within this sheet metal lower half of this shell of the spherical reservoir structure of this disclosure. Opposing this semicircular reservoir element 1 is spherical or domemember 4. These members 1, 4, are
herein shown as united by a joint, seam, 01
weld 5 in the region of the maximum diameter or bulge portion of this reservoir. The
dome member 4 vhas `central inwardly.
threaded throat 6 which is engaged by bushing 7 having nipple 8 therein asa guide for wicking 9. Adjacent this inwardly extending threaded throat 6 is minor throat'proopening plug 11 is disposed. Uponremoving the filling opening plug 11, material for combustion, as kerosene, may be introduced into this reservoir or receptacle. The wicking 9 may be worked into and through the nipple 8 to leave the desired extent of the wicking 9 protrude therefrom and then through the larger opening provided by this throat 6 of this sheet metal upper member 4, the loose wickin may be thrust and the busl ing 7 ass semble into locking position inthe opening This sheet metal unitary struct-ure provid ing a vessel, is resistant against impact from horses hoofs or vehicle wheels and when'v kicked, knocked, or struck will readily shift vaway from such source and if this be a tendency to disturb the condition 4of the reser- 1925. Serial No. 27,167.
voir as to its base, it normally'is matter of but -momentary disturbance, fo'r the vessel at once is self-righting so that .it will approxf imate the position vor placing in the indicat- -ing or guarding of the excavation as inlaying or repairing of tracks or pavement with flame 12 of the torch Afrom the upper side of lthis vessel.
' This vessel as made from'sheet met-al ele ments l, 4, is of light weight andV tough throughout.. The walls are stiif against battering while the loading or weight 3 in the bottom ofthe vessel is ofa mass'suicient to load the vessel for ordinarily rocking the vessel into its upright position for normal operation of the vwick 9 for delivering capillary attraction the kerosene forburning p at the flame 12.
What is claimed and it is -desired tosecure I zone-shaped base section, and a load within said base section, whereby rocking of the torch is on a spherical bearing of the base section continuous in. spherical curvatureV from the lateral bounding means of the b ase Y' section as enveloping the load.
dome shaped. upper section, a complemental lzone-shaped base section having an endless bead2 and a rigid load element within the houslng for the base section lisposed, inside said base section to be' .there retained by said bead, whereby said/housing is rockably sup- .ported by saidbase section. viding threaded. opening 10 in which filling 3. A torch vcomplete initself as to its support, said torch embodying `a housing comprising .a dome shaped upper ortion and a complemental zonev shaped ase portion,
which portions together form a reservoir, said housing upper portlon having an open-- ing, a wick receiving bushing. in said opening, and a loaded base anchored with the* tilted supporting side ofsaid housing to a position of rest with its loaded base downward and the wick bushing upward-with the housiing portion thereabout convex downwar c 2. A torchy reservoir housing comprising a i Iniwitness whereof I affix my signature.'
