This invention relates to machines for use in the manufacture of shoes and has for its object to produce a machine for locating the uppers and soles of shoes in proper relation to each other with or without pressing together the flanges of the uppers and the margins ofthe soles while they are in position to be secured. The invention, in its broader aspects, is applicable to the manufacture of shoes of various kinds and is shown herein, by way of illustration, in its particular application to stitchdown Work. In a commercial method of making stitch down shoes the upper is molded to present an outwardly projecting flange and the upper, and a sole or insole having an extension are assembled and the flange of the upper 1s sewed to the extension of the sole or insole before the last is inserted in they shoe. The sewing machine operator has to position the edge of the flange and the edge of the sole while the sewing operation is progressing, and it is onlyby the exercise of great skill that satisfactory work can be done and the production of uniform work by this method can be obtained, if at all, only at the sacrifice of reasonable speed.
By the aid of this invention the stitch- -down manufacturing process can be expedited and better work secured than where each sewing machine operator is required to assemble his own work. As I am advised, it is new to provide a machine comprising means by which a sole and the flange of a previously molded upper may be accurately located in proper relation to each other off the last and then pressed together and secured.
An important feature of the invention consists in a novel organization of instrumentalities comprising means for locating a sole in a predetermined position, and means for locating an upper off the last in predetermined relation to the sole. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the upper and the sole are preliminarily located out of intimate contact with each other, and themachine, as another feature, includes means for pressing together the flange of the upper and the margin of the sole. By application of cement to one or both of the contacting work faces this pressure may be caused to effect adhesion of the sole and flange surfaces sufficient to maintain them 'in relative position until they are presented to the sewing machine. Preferably the upper is located relatively to the sole by means engaging the inside of the upper, for example, by a form having the contour which it is desired the end of the shoe shall have, and means co-operating with the inside form is provided for holding the upper in contact therewith about its periphery. This latter means may also form the means for pressing the flange against the margin of the sole.
A further feature of the invention consists in means for positioning the sole comprising means for embracing an end of the sole, and means capable of length adjustments for locating the other end of the sole laterally,
the toe and heel end locating means being interconnected to effect width adjustments of one end locating means, for example that for the toe end, in accordance with length adjustments of the other end locatingmeans, for example that for the heel end.
Another feature of the invention consists in means for locating a sole in predetermined position and upper locatingmeans arranged for movement into and out of operative relation to the sole locating means in a predetermined path so that an upper and a sole may be brought'into proper relation to each other. 7 The upper locating means may comprise a form adjustable as to width and having the end and side contour of a last. In the embodiment of this feature herein shown, the form is for the toe end and is low as compared to a last of ordinary shoe shape, so that uppers havingtheir toes molded to any height may be accommodated. Adjusting means is provided for varying the width -of the form for various sized uppers, and size indications are provided for showing the size to which the adjusting means has been set.

A stitch-down upper which has previous- 1y been molded at its toe end with an outwardly projecting flange is to be located relatively to a sole .on the sole locating means already described in position to have its outwardly directed flange pressed against the margin of the sole. For this purpose a formis provided having the contour of the side and end faces of the toe portion of a right or left last. The construction and mounting of the form is best shown in Figs. 2 and 7. Referring to Fig. 7, the form consists of two parts 90, 92 which are arranged. for separation, about a virtual pivot located at their toe ends, by means of curved guides 94 and 96 which engages a slot formed in a supporting plate 98. The parts 90,92 are held toward each other by a spring 100 at tached by pins 102, 104 between the parts 90, 92. To separate the. parts 90, 92 ofthe form for different sized uppers, a slide 106 is provided which has a pin 108 engaging a spiral groove 112 in an adjusting cam 110. On the upper face of the adjusting earn 112 is a' plate 114, shown at the left of Fig. 2 and removed atthe right in that figure, which is provided with size indications cooperating with an index 116 to indicate the propersetting of the cam for different sized uppers. The inner end of the slide 106 is provided with a shiftable member 120 which has opposite faces 122 to engage in clined faces 124, 126 on the parts 90,- 92, respectively. Above the faces 124, 126 are overhanging flanges 128, 130 which overlie the member 120. The part 120 and the slide 106 are-provided with interenga ging means, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, which prevent relative movement of these parts longitudinally of the slidebut permit the part 120 to be lifted out when the parts 90, 92 are separated to displace the fianges'128, 130 from above the part 120. The part 120 is adapted to be shifted to a position 90 fromthat shown in Fig. 7 and to be re-engaged with the slide, as shown in Fig. 8. The member 120 is preferably marked with width indications,"the marks D and E being shown in the drawings. lVhen the portion marked I) is in engagement with the slide 106, the ends 122 which engage the' parts 90, 92 are less widely separated that when the portion marked E is put in engagement with the slide 106. Therefore, provision is made for initially setting the parts 90, 92 of the form for agiven'width, the size adjustments for that width being effected by rotating the cam 110. The form 90, 92 is mounted for convenient movement into and out of position over the toeend of the sole locating means, and when in position over the sole lo'cating'means its location laterally thereof is accurately determined. To limit this movement of the arm, a screw 146 threaded through a lug on the arm 142 and engaging a stop 147 on the machine frame. is provided. By this construction the form 90, 92 is held yieldingly raised by the spring 144 so that it maybe-depressed toward the sole locating means and is movable into the machine from the position shown at the left of Fig. 2 to the position shown at the right in that figure by (lo-operating with the form 90, 92 which determines the inside contour of the upper about the side and end portions of the toe is provided means for engaging the outside of the upper and holding it against the side and end' faces of the form. This means comprises, as best shown in Fig. 5, a pair of plates 150, 152 which are mounted on the under side of carriers 154, 156, and are re movably held in place thereon by screws 158. In order that the plates 150, 152 close about a point located at the center of the toe, the carriers 154, 156 are arranged for movement about that center, their movement being guided by fixed pins 160 which engage curved slots 162 therein. The pins 160 are headed'at thelrlower ends and extend upwardly into lugs 161 in atrans verse member 163 of the frame, Fig. '2. The carriers 154 156 are thus movably secured to the machine frame. As shown in Fig. 3, the plate 150 on the carrier 154 is provided with a tongue 151 which engages a groove in the other plate 152. To limit the closing movement of the carriers to corre spond with the given adjustment of the tornna screw 196, is provided, the screw 196 having a knurled head 197 is threaded through the transverse member 163 and engages the arm 180 of the carrier actuating bell-crank lever.
In the operation, of the machine the operator will withdraw the slide 50 and place a left shoe sole in contact with the means T0, 72 for positioning the toe end of the sole. He will then push in the slide to cause the V- shaped faces 54 ot the part 52 to engage the heel end 01" the sole and locate it laterally. By this movement the toe locating means 70. 72 will be closed automatically to a corresponding to the length of the sole. During the positioning of the sole, the term 90, 92 is swung back and. to one side on its parallel links 1 36, as shown, at the left in Fig. 2. The operator will now adjust the form by turning the cam 112 until the size corresponding to that of the upper comes opposite the index 116 He will also see that the member 120 is positioned on the slide 106 to correspond with the width of shoe being operated upon. T he upper. which preferably has already been molded to approximately the proper shape at its toe end and has an outwardly extending flange coated with a suitahlecadhesive, is placed over the form 90, 92 and depressed by turning the rocker 138 against the tension of the spring leis l until the term is adjacent to the sole. The form and upper are then swung in until the upper engages the plates 150, 152 at its toe end. The ereadle is now depressed to start the machine whereupon the shaft 16 makes a semi-rotation, bringing the nuts into the position shown in Fig. 1.
uring this movement the table 10 has been yieldingly raised through the spring 32 and the spring 188 has acted through the connections described to cause forward and closing movement of the plates 150, 152 about the toe of the upper to press it into engagement with the form. The movement oi the plates will, of course, be cilected before the table has reached the limit of its upward movement and during the latter part of that movement the sole will be forcibly pressed against the flange of the upper which is supportedon its top face by the plates 150, 1 Li.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
1. In a machine for assembling a previonsly molded stitch-down upper having an with the inner and outer faces otthe upper over an area confined to the side and end portions of the upper adjacent to the outturned flange, said means having parts arranged for relative movement at first substantially parallel to the sole and then per pendicularly to the sole.
In a machine tor assembling a promously molded stitch-down upper having an 7 outwardly extending flange in proper relation to a sole to be secured thereto, the combination of means for locating the sole in predetermined position means having the peripheral contour of the inner side of the toe portion of a shoe over which means the upper is placed, said means being termed to occupy a portion only of the space enclosed by the upper, and means arranged to close upon the upper for holding the upper to said peripheral contour to determine the shape of the upper and to locate the flange of the upper in proper relation to the sole in the locating means for attachment of the flange of the upper and the margin of the a). In a machine for assembling a previously molded stitch-down upper having an outwardly ntending flange in proper rela tion to a sole to be secured thereto, the combination of mea s tor locating the sole in predetermined position, a flat form having the peripheral contour of the inner side oi the toe portion of a shoe over which means the upper is placed and providing a space over the toe oi the form between the form and the upper, means 'r'or holding the upper to said peripheral contour to determine the shape of the upper and to locate the flange ot the upper in proper relation to the sole in the locating means for attachment to the flange of the upper and the margin of the sole, and means for relatively moving said sole locating means and said upper shaping means substantially perpendicularly to the sole to cause the flange to be secured to the margin of the sole by cement.

In a machine at the class described, the combination with sole locating means, of uppcr locating means comprising a form having the ed 0 and side contour of a last but not the he ght of a last arranged for insertion into an unlasted upper having an outturned flange and arranged for movement ion tudinally of a sole in said locating means in a pact etern'iined path.
In a machine of the class described, the combination with sole locating means, of upthan a last and having the edge and side contour of a last arranged for insertion into an unlasted upper having an outturned flange, upper clamping means comprising parts movable parallel to the bottom of said form and having an edge contour corresponding to that of the form, and means for closing the clamping means to conform the upper to the side faces of the form.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with sole locating means, of upper'locating means comprising a form having the edge and side contour of a last arranged tor insertion into an unlasted upper having an outturned flange, upper clamping means having an edge contour corresponding to that of the form, means for closing the clamping means to conform the upper to the side faces of the form, and means operating in time relation with said closing means for moving relatively the sole locating means and the clamping means to clamp the outturned flange against the sole on the sole locating means.
7. In a machine of the class described, the combination with sole locating means and upper locating means comprising a form having the end and side contour of a last arranged for insertion into an unlasted upper having an outturned flange, of upper clamping means having an edge contour corresponding to that of the form, and power means for closing the clamping means yieldingly against the end and sides of the form to shape the upper to the toe portion of the form.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination with sole locating means and upper locating means comprising a form having the end and side contour of a last arranged for insertion into an unlasted upper having an outturned flange, of upper clamping means having an edge contour corresponding to that of the form, power means for closing the clamping means yieldingly against the end and sides of the form to shape the upper to the toe portion of the form, and power means for relatively moving the clamping means and thesole'locating means to cause a sole on the locating means and the flange of the upper underlying the clamping means to be pressed together.
9. In a machine of the class described, the combination of sole locating means having a flange extending about the periphery of the toe end of a sole to locate the toe end of the sole, said flange being arranged for movement perpendicularly to the bottom of the sole, and means for locating the heel end. of the sole.
10. In a machine of the class described, the combination with sole locating means to locate the toe endof a sole, of means for locating the heel end of the sole which is adjustable for varying lengths of soles, and connected means for causing the Width of the toe end locating means to be varied in accordance with the length adjustment of the means for locating the heel end of the sole.
11. In a machine of the class described, the combination with sole locating means having a flange arranged for movement perpendicularly to the sole to locate the toe end of a sole, of means for locating the heel end of the sole, and means for pressing the out turned flange of a previously molded stitchdown shoe upper upon a sole located in the sole locating means.
12. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a widthwise adjustable. form for determining the edge contour of an unlasted shoe upper having an outturned flange, and means for pressing a sole and the outturned flange of said upper into; contact to effect adhesion of cement on the engaging faces of the sole and flange to secure the upper and sole together. i
13. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a widthwise adjustable form for determining the edge contour 01" an unlasted shoe upper having an outturned flange, means having size indications for setting the form, for a given size, and means for pressing a sole and the outturned flange of said upper into contact to effect adhesion of cement on the engaging faces of the sole and flange to secure the upper and sole together.
14. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an adjustable form for determining the inside edge contour of an unlasted shoe upper, means for adjusting the form for varying sizes all of a designated shoe width, and means shiftable at will for adapting the adjusting means to effect adjustment of the form for the same sizes of a different shoe width.
15. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an adjustable form for determining the inside edge contour of an unlasted shoe upper with means for presenting a sole in position for connection with an outturned flange of an upper supported by the said form, means for adjusting the form for a series of sizes all of one shoe width, and means shiftable at will for adapting the adjusting means to efl'ect adjustment of the form for the same series of sizes of another shoe Width.
16. In a machine of the class described, the combination of upper locating means comprising a low form having the edge and side contour only of a last and arranged for insertion into an unlasted upper having an outturned flange, and upper clamping means having a thin edge contoured to correspond to the shape of the form and a face to engage the flange so that said clamping means applies pressure to the flange and avoids pressure against a substantial area of the form.
17. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a sole locating means, upper locating means comprising a form having the edge and side contour only of a last and arranged for insertion into an' unlasted upper having an outturnedflange already formed thereon, upper clamping means having an edge contour corresponding to that Of the form, means for closing the clamping means to conform the upper to the side faces of the form, and means, for limiting the closing movement of the clamping means to avoid excessive pressure of the clamping means against the form, the sole locating means, and the clamping means be- "ing relativelymovable to clamp the out turnedflange against a sole in the sole lo eating means. 7

20. In a machine for co-relating a shoe upper and shoe sole oil the last into the relative positions they are to have in the finished shoe, the combination of means for placing the end of the shoe upper and the end of a shoe sole 1n predetermined relation including a form for receiving the end of the upper and relatively positioning means for the shoe sole, and means for pressing the upper longitudinally and traisversely about the sides and end of the form and the margin of the upper and the shoe sole against each other.
28. In a machine of the class described,
the combination of clamping means, means comprising a depressible member for 10- eating a shoe part in predetermined relation to the clamping means, and power means for operating the clamping means to clamp the shoe part and to cause depression of the locating means.

In a machine of the class described, the combination ot a form having the end and side contour of an end of a last and upon which the end of the upper is located, means for locating asole in predetermined relation to the form, upper treating means having an edge contour corresponding to that of the form, and power means for op erating the upper treating means to conform the upper to the end and'sides of the form and to cause the margin of the upper and the margin of the sole to be pressed togather.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a form adapted to re.- ceive ashoe upper and having the contour of an end and sides of a last, means for locating a sole in predetermined relation to the form, clamping means having the contour of the form, and power operated means for moving the clamping means against the end and sides of the form and for forcing the margin of the upper and the margin of the sole bottom together.
31. In a machine of the class described, means for locating a sole in predetermined position..and upper locating means arranged for bodily movement laterally of the sole into and out of position over said sole locating means.

In a machine of the class described, means for locating a sole in predetermined position, I and upper locating means constructed and arranged for movement into position over said sole locating means in a predetermined path to locate an upper with its edge parallel to the periphery oiithe sole, said locating means being constructed and arranged for bodily movement away from its position over the sole to an inoperative position for the reception of an upper.

means for locating a sole in predetermined position, and upper locating means comprising a member arranged for movement in a plane substantially parallel to and above the sole, said member being arranged for permissive movement toward the sole.
