GARAGE Jack.
Application V1e1-April 27, 1925, Serial No. 25,994. A.'tteneilaed May 1, 1926.; A
This invention relates to vehicle lifting jacks of the general type illustrated an -described inmy former application for pat` ent, No. 688,401, filed January 25, 1224, and `5 the object of the invention 1s to lmprove such vjacks so as to render them more efli' .cient andgserviceable. The invention is fully set forth 1n the description and claims following, reference b eing had tothe accompanymg diafwmg, 1n which: Fig. 1 is aside elevation 'of a ]ack. embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the upper portion-of the jack, showing4 details in 'the connection of the llftlng scrc'w with the toggle levers and slidlng post. Inthe drawing, the numeral 5 designates the base'of the jack, which is formed with a horizontal space 6 -and a vertical space to receive Atransmitting gearing to be described presently. From the base rises a channeled standard 8, and in this is slidably mounted a post 9, which is slotted at 10 to recelve a vertical screw 11.4 Theupper end of this j screw enters a bearing 12 attached to or forming a part of the standard, and the .lower end is journaled in bearmgs 1n the base.- One of these bearings' 1s a ball thrust bearing 13 to take the pull of the screw in. lifting. The screw runs in a nut 14'attached' to slide 15. The slide connects by its arms 15'l by links 16, with' the lower members 17 of a toggle lever, whose connect pivotally with the lifting post. It will Ahe apparent Athat the turning ofthe screw to the right-will draw and correspondingly elevate' the post, `through the extension of the toggle. As the screw bears the irhole weight of the load the lhrust-bearing should preferably be of thc ball-hearing type. as indicated.
' Secured' lo thc lower cud of the screw is a gear 19 in mesh with an idle .gear 20, formed in parl as a mitcr gear 21. Another miter gear 22 attached to a shortnshaft 23 mounted in bearings 24'serves for the transmission of motion-to the train of gears and screw by the turning of a hand-lever shaft 25. This 'connectswith a socket 26 by a universal joint 27, the outer end ofthe shaft lever shaft, asv it 1s supposed .toggle levers connecting the post upper members 1 8 downthe slidev `therein, the vertical engagement with 23 Being squared at 28 toengage said socket.'
acteristics I evident that the load may be supported at any desired point without loc tus, and when suppliedwith axlong lla-ndtol be for garage use, the jackyis easily and quickly manipulated,.and Well adapted for the expeditious handlin lHaving thus claim:
of automobiles. escribed my4 invention, I
1. manning jaaa-a base adapted to hold- 65 gearing for turnmg 4a screw,'.a standard rising therefrom, slotted forv a sliding nut, afvertcal screw engaging the'nut, a slide' attached to the nut 4and movable on the standard, a 'post slidable in said standard, and the slide, .gearing connecting with the screw, and .means adapted for the rotation of the gearing.
' 2. In a lifting jack, 'a base chambered to receive horizontally disposed spur and beval gears and a vertically gears as aforesaid disposed therein, the vertical gear having al shaft adapted fo'r connection with a hand-lever shaft, a vertical screw attached to one of the spur gears, a
disposed bevel gef-.1,
ball bearing for said screw, a slotted stand-l ard rising from the base, a slide thereon provided with a nut engaging said screw,l a lifting post slidable in said standard, and toggle levers connecting the post and slide.
3. In a lifting jack, a base chambered to hold horizontally disposed spur and bevel gears and an engaging vertically disposed bevel gear, gearing as aforesaid disposed gearV being adapted for an operating hand-lever, a 'hollow, base. a vertical vscrew thereinattached to one of the gears, a slide and nut engaging thc screw, a forked post slidable inthe slotted standard rising from-the.
standard, bearings for the lower andI upper ends of the screw and toggle levers connecting the slide and post. l
In testimony whereof I afx my signature.
