Description

Patented Nov. 16, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DOOR ATTACHMENT.
Application filed April 26, 1924. Serial No. 709,244.
This invention relates to a door attachment, the general object of the invention being,` to provide means for closing a door automatically aft-er it is opened and for holding the door open when desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for causing the device to close the door when the door is swung open with great force. l
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail,
reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a view of a door and its frame showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1.
In these views, l indicates a hinged part which is adapted to be'fastened to the frame A of a door B, this frame being bent so that its barrel part is spaced from the frame so that the second hinged part 2 will extend at an angle away from the door and its frame. .A pin 3 is carried bythe outer end of the part 2 and a rod l has an eye at one end engaging said pin and its other end is bent at an angle and passes through a bracket 5 on the door. A coil spring 6 has one end `fastened. at 7, to the door frame and its other end engages a clip 8 held by the pin 3. A conical spring' 9 is carried by the part l so that it will be struck by the part 2 when the door is opened to its fullest extent.
From the foregoingI it will be seen that the spring 6 will automatically close the door after the same has been opened in the usual manner as its tension will act on the part 2 to return said part to normal position and the movement of this part 2 will be communicated to the door through the rod e. When it is desired to hold the door open the door is swung to a position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2 so that the part 2 passes beyond dead' center and thus the spring; 6 will act to hold the door in open position. If the door is swung open a violent manner to cause the part 2 to strike the spring` the recoil of said sgri will move the part 2 past dead center and thus permit the spring,` 6 to close the door '.:hfis I have provided means for automatically closing the deor or for holding' the door open when desired with additional means yfor closing the door when the same is swung all the way open. r
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will he readily apparent.
I `desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim is A door attachment, comprising a hinge section adapted to be fastened to a door frame. the barrel end of the section extending` outwardly from the frame at an angle,
a straight section having its `barrel end conf nected with the barrel end of the lirst sec'- tion, a rod pivoted to the outer end of the second section and to the door, a coil spring connected with the outer end of the second section and to the door frame at a point above the point of connection ofthe rod with the door and a spring bumper carried by the first section and adapted to be engaged by the second section when the door is fully open.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
CARL J. PETERSON.
