My invention relatesto lockers, particu-. larly of a type having two pairs of compartments, one compartment of each pair being narrow and vertically. arranged and the other being wider and arranged at the ends of the narrow compartments. Incarrying out my invention in the form illustrated there are two of'the wide compartments arranged above the narrow compartments and the doors of the narrow compartments are provided with locks whereasthe doors-of the wide compartmentsare provided with latches and these latches-are accessible only after the companion vertical door has been unlocked and opened. -By this. means only one lock is necessary for a pair of doors, the other door having simply a latch which is accessible only from the interior ofthe verticalucompartment-belonging .to the same pair of compartments. As a result. of my invention the occupant of. one-half of. the locker can control both doors ofrhis portion'and yet need carry only one key. Also the doors of his portion of the locker are operable independently and, if desired, the latching door may be left latched when the locking door is unlocked. V

It is not essential which door of a .pair is controlled by the lock and which by the l latch. I have shown one, form in which the lock is on the door of the vertical compartment and another form in which it is on the door of the horizontal compartment. In eitherform the latch is operable by means which extend into and are accessible only from the inside of the other compartment of the pair. I

In the form illustrated the latches are operated by vertically .mov'able latch bars. one for each latch, one of the latch bars passingthrough the horizontal compartment which isclosest to the vertical compartments. Oneof the objects of my invention is to provide meansfor preventing access to this latch bar from within the horizontal compartment through which it passes. The object of my invention is to provide alocker having one or more of the foregoing characteristics.

The lower portionwof the space within the outer walls is divided by a 'cen-' tral partition 18 into two vertical compartments which are specially adapted for containing coats, umbrellas and the like. The

These are especially adapted tocontain hats, lunch boxes, tools and the like, and for identification may-be referred to as horizontal or hat? compartments. The upper hat compartment has a door 22 hinged to one of the side walls and the other has a door 24 hinged to the opposite sidewall. The vertical or coat compartments are provided with doors 26, and 28 which are hinged to the center partition 18. v

The doors of the vertical compartment-s are provided with locks 30 which may be key-operated or may be combination locks.

For simplicity they will be referred to as key-operated locks although it will be understood that the term is used broadly enough to include either type. These locks as upper portion of the locker has a. horizontal control door-locking devices which may assume various forms. In the illustrated forms a vertically movable locking bar 32 is mounted within the door and is provided with hooks at for engaging keepers 36. Bar

The uppermost door 22 has a hook adapted to be engaged by an arm or latch l2 mounted upon a vertically slidable latch bar 44 located within the locker. This latch bar ishere shown as mounted on the inside of the side wall 10 of the locker. It extends down through the lower horizontal compartment into the vertical compartment closed within a guard plate or sheath 48 p which extends from top to bottom of the lower horizontal compartment and is spotwelded, riveted or otherwise permanently fastened to the inside of the side wall 10 in position to cover the latch'bar and at the same time prevent free vertical movement of the latter.

The door 24 of the lower horizontal compartment is similarly controlled having a hook 50 adapted to be engaged by an arm or latch 52 extending on a latch bar 54. The upper and lower hat compartment doors 66 and 68 respectively are controlled by locks 70. 'They are provided with handles 72, which are controlled by the locks, and the handles in turn operate hoo rs 74 which cooperate with keepers 76 mounted within the respective compartments. The lower coat compartment door is controlled by a latch bar 7 8 which isvertically movable upon the locker wall 12 and has anarm 80 underlying one of the hooks 34 for raising the latter to release the coat compartment door. handle 82 which projects into the lower hat compartment. Thus this modified form possesses the same advantages as the one first described and aifords'the manufacturer a choice of design without requiring any substantial changes in construction.

A locker having its compartments arranged in pairs, each pair consisting of a vertical compartment and a horizontal compartment, the vertical compartments being arranged side by side, and the horizontal compartments being arranged one above the other at the same end of the vertical compartments'whereby one of the horizontal compartments intervenes between the remoter horizontal compartment and the vertical compartments, all of the compartments having hinged doors, one of the doors of a pair of compartments having a latch and the other a look, a latch bar for each latch, each latch bar being operable from the compartment of the same pair having the lock door, one of said latch bars passing throughthe horizontal compartment lying nearer to the vertical'compartments, and a guard in the 7 last mentioned horizontal compartment for preventing access to said latch bar.
