This invention relates to package ties and has for its primary object to provide a very tion with 'a tying string permanently cony nested to one of said arms, said head being provided upon its under side and at opposite pointswith lugs or projections for binding engagement upon 4the string when the saine is wound about the Shanks be'- ucath the head or button. i`
llt is an additional object ofthe invention to provide a device for the above'purpose which may be inanufacturedV at mini- -nuun cost, is strong and durablein construction and not likely to tear thep"apers or envelopes when in its applied position.
lilith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the yaccoinpanying drawings, in which,
Figure 'l is a plan view showing my iniproved package tie applied to a package of envelopes Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of' the device taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l; and Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates a sheet metal disk, preferably of tin, and nickeled, painted or otherwise provided with surface ornamentation. This disk, as clearly shown in Figure 2, has a body portion 6 of concave-convex form and at the certer of the disk, the same is punched upwardly from the concave face thereof to provide a short annular flange. The straight horizontal marginal vportion 8 of the disk may be provided with any desired advertising` matter, as indicated in Figure i. A relatively sinall circular head 9 is supported above the upwardly struck flange @it the perimeter"of the w25,- seria N@ 122,232,
T at the center of the disk, by means of spaced, fiat, metal shanks j10. Vl`hese' shanks project downwardly at opposite sides ofthe Piange Z and at a point sp'acedfrom the'con! cave' iface of the disk 5, said shanks are eX- tended outwardly in opposite directions `t'o forni supporting 'arms ll. These arms are soldered or otherwise permanently secured at their extrer'nitiesl to the 'disk 5` at the junction ofthe' curved body portion 6 thereof with the marginal Ahorizontal Vportion '8. Y "disk 9`and`on the under side thereof in" V(,)pposedl4 relation to the shanks l0, the lugs for projections 12 are; formed.
'13 one end of which apring or loop is attached, said loop being permanently engaged under one ofitlijearms ll between t'he'sam'e the body portion of t'he'disku 5.
in the use of the device, the disk 5 is arranged centrally upon'the package' of 'letters, papers'or other articles," wi'thf' its convek surface in engagement thereon,wh`ereby itis understood thatthe peripheral edge of said disk 'willy be out of contact with the surface of the package. They string or tape l is then passed in one direction around the package and turned around the spaced vertical portions of the shanks 10, said string'being then extended at right angles around the other dimension of the package and the terminal thereof wrapped around the spaced shanks. As the string or tape accumulates upon the shanks 10, the projections or lugs l2 will bear with increasing pressure upon the string so that the extremity of said string will be securely held in connection with the metal tie element.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is believed that the construction, manner of use and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. The package of envelopes or other articles may be quickly and tightly bound together by means of the present invention and without necessitating the tying of knots in the string or tape. Owing to the fact that only the conveX portion of the metal disk engages upon the package, the paper will not be torn or designates the tie string or tape, to
otherwise mutilated in the transmission of the package through the mails. The entire device may be as readily removed from the package and said device subsequently used for similar purposes. It is apparent that the device can be manufactured in various sizes to be employed for diiierent purposes, and that the disk constituting the body of the devicemay be of any desired shape or form.
While the preferred construction and arrangement of the several structural features of the 'device is shown, itis to be understood that the same is susceptible of considerable modification within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
It Will, of course, be manifest that when the device is to be used for the purpose of tying up metal sheets or other relatively heavy articles, fiexible Wire or chain is employed in lieu of the tape 13. In case the head 9 is subjected to pressure and bent downwardly Within the dished portion of the disk 5, said head may be readily forced upwardly by inserting a nail or other like element through the central opening in the disk surrounded by the'flange 7.
What is claimed is l. A package tie including a sheet metal disk having a concave-convex 'body portion, a head spaced from the concave face of the disk, shanks fixed to said head and having arms projectingoutwardly in relatively opposite directions and secured to the outer' edge portion oi the disk, said head being provided on its under side With projections in opposed relation to said arms, and a` tie string permanently attached to one of said arms and adapted to have its extremity Wound about said shanks beneath the head,
nsoaoei the projections on said head having frictional bearing` engagement upon the tie string.
2. A package tie including a metal disk having' a concavo-convex body portion, a concentrically disposed head arranged in spaced relation to the concave face of' the disk, spaced shanks secured to the under side of said head and having arms projecting laterally in opposite directions and secured at their extremities to said disk 'to sustain the head in spaced relation to the disk, said head being provided upon its under side with projections opposed to the respective shank arms for frictional bearing engagement upon a tie string Wound about said shanks.
3. A bundle tie including .a metal disk having a concave-convex body portion and a straight horizontal marginal portion, a concentrically disposed head, spaced shanks fixed at one of their ends to the under side of the head and having arms projecting upwardly in relatively opposite directions and lined at their extremities to the marginal portion of the disk to sustain the head in spaced relation to said disk, a tie string permanent ly connected to one of said arms, said string being adapted to be Wound about said spaced shanks beneath said head and the projections on the head having rictional bearing engagement With the string.
