A bushing 50 is fixed upon the inner end ofthe sleeve 49, and has a flange 5l contacting with the flange 32 of the bushing 3l rotatably, this flange 5l being secured to the platen-cylinder 48a. rihe sleeve 49 projects beyond one of the end supports 25a and .is secured, at its extreme outer end, by a fastener to a linger-imola by which the sleeve and the platen-cylinder 48UL may be manually rotated.
The platen-cylinders 48 and 48 are tubular and the flanges 32 and 5l close the inner ends thereof, While their outer ends are respectively closed by end plates 56 having hubs 57, the hub of one platebeing secured to the sleeve 49 by a fastener 58, While the other end-plate 56 has a hub 57 secured 'by thev fastener 58 directly to the platenshaft 27.

In a typeivriting machine, the combination of a rotatable platen, end plates upon 'which said platen is journaled, a ratchet-V Wheel for turning said platen, line-spacing mechanism having provision for operating said ratchet-Wheel, one of said end plates being provided With a dial, a stop-member pivoted upon said endV plate, means carried by said stop-member for latching it at predetermined points of said dial, an indicating edge carried b-y said stop-member for locating any point of said dial Where said stop-member is to be latched, means holding saidstop-meinber unlatched, a f-eed-pawl operable independently of the line-spacing mechanism normally retracted from said ratchet-Wheel, means for automatically engaging said feed-pawl with said ratchet- Wheel to drive the latter, and means having .a v ariable throw controlled by said stopmember for actuating` said paWl-engaging means.

In a device of the kind described, the combination of a platen, means for rotatably supporting said platen, a ratchet-Wheel on said platen, a feed-pawl engaging said ratchet-Wheel to drive it, a line-spacing slide for actuating said feed-pawl, an extra feedpavvl also engaging with said ratchet-Wheel to actuate it, means concentric with said platen for supporting the last-named feedpawl, a fixed stop, an operating handle for actuating said second-named means, means for predetermining the distance of movement of said handle away from said stop, a spring engaging said handle to move the same to -a position of rest against said stop, and means engaged by the extra feed-paivl just prior t-o the engagement of said handle With said stop for retracting said pawl from said ratchet-Wheel.

A device of the kind described consisting of a bracket-plate formed With a medial recess, a downwardly and angularly disposed a 1m formed integrally uponsaid plate and intersecting the longitudinal axis of said recess, and a plate removably secured upon said bracket-plate land having a central opening registering with said recess, said plate having a segmental jagged edge, said bracket-'plate being inscribed with an arcurate series of consecutively enumerated and calibrated marks arranged radially of said segmental jagged edge.
