SMOKING PIPE.

The present invention relates to a tobacco pipe, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of this character having a nicotine chamber arranged below the bowl of the pipe and a nicotine passageway leading from the nicotine chamber for collect-- ing excessive nicotine, said passageway being closed by the attachment of the stem of the pipe to the head of the pipe.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a removable bowl having attached thereto a nicotine chamber, said removable bowl and nicotine chamber being held in the head of the pipe by a plug dctachably received in the lower portion of the nicotine chamber for closing said chamher.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pipe having a metallic bowl received in the head thereof, said bowl being in communication with a metallic nicotine chamber arranged below the same, and a lid or cover hinged to the top of the metallic bowl for closing the same, said nicotine chamber having openings in the side thereof one of which aligns with a nicotine passageway while the other aligns with .the main passageway to the stem of the pipe.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a pipe of the kind indicated, which is simple and substantial in construction, which can be manufactured economically, and which will be thoroughly eflicient and practical in use. With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides-in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

which is provided with an enlarged opening Sand 69 11 for receiving a metallic bowl 12. bowl may be constructed, of aluminum or any other similar material. Hinged to one side of the bowl 12, as at 13, is a perforated lid or cover 1a, which is provided with a snap fastener 15 at the side thereof opposite to where the same is hinged for engaging over an outwardly extending portion 16 formed from the bowl 12. A handle 17 is arranged upon the upper sur face of the perforated lid or cover 14. which is to be engaged for removing the metallic bowl 12 from the opening 11 in the head 10.

Extending downwardly and formed centrally of the metallic bowl 12 is a tapered cylindrical portion 18 which forms a nicotine chamber, said tapered cylindrical portion being adapted to snugly engage a tapered opening 19 extending downwardly from the opening '11 in the head of the pipe 89 and through the bottom of the pipe. A small perforated plate 20 is positioned be tween the bowl 12 and the nicotine chamber 18 forpermitting smoke and nicotine to pass therethrough while tobacco will be retained in the bowl. The interior of the lower end of thetapered cylindrical portion 18 forming the nicotine chamber is threaded for receiving a threaded plug 21, which closes the lower end of the nicotine chamber. The plug 21 is provided with an enlarged head 22 which engages the lower surface of the head of the pipe for holding the tapered cylindrical portion 18 and the bowl 12 in the head of the pipe. 9

Adjacent the point where the plug 21 terminates a small opening 23 is arranged in the side of the tapered cylindrical member 18 which communicates with a nicotine pas sageway 24 extending towards the stem of the pipe, while above the opening 28 and in close proximity to the perforated plate 20 is another opening 25 in the tapered cylindrical member 18 which communicates bore 27 in the stem 28 of the pipe. By referring to Figure 1, it will be noted that the stem 28 is attached to the head 10 by means of a threaded sleeve having its opposits ends threaded into the stem and lead, said sleeve being arranged so that the opening therein communicates with the passageway 26 and bore 27. It will be noted that when the stem 28 is secured to the head that the stem forms a closure for one end of the nicotine passageway 24 in order to prevent the nicotine from escaping therefrom. Attached to the stem 28 in any preferred manner is a mouth piece 29 which is provided with a bore that aligns with the bore 27 in the stem 28.

In operation, the lid 14 is swung upon the hinge connection 13 and the bowl 12 is filled with tobacco. After the igniting of the tobacco, the smoke therefrom will be drawn through the perforated plate 20 and into the passageway 26 from which it passes through the bore in the stem and mouth piece of the pipe. By creating a draft, the nicotine from the tobacco will seep downwardly through the perforated plate 20 and into the nicotine chamber 18 and the nicotine passageway 24:, where the same will remain during the smoking of the pipe. By the provision of the nicotine passageway 24 the excessive nicotine may lodge therein, thus eliminating to a great extent the tendency of the same being drawn through the stem of the pipe.

when it is desired to clean the pipe, the threaded plug 21 is detached from the lower end of the nicotine chamber 18, which will permit said nicotine chamber together with the bowl 12 to be removed by exerting an upward pull on the handle 17. The stem 28 is then disconnected from the head of the pipe which will permit the cleaning of the nicotine passageway 2& by inserting an object therethrough. 1

By constructing the removable bowl 12 and nicotine chamber 18 of aluminum material the same will not burn or scorch as in pipes having a wooden bowl, such construction also eliminating to a great extent the coating or calring formed in the interior of the bowl.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:

1. A tobacco pipe comprising a head having a bowl therein, a nicotine chamber arranged below said bowl, a perforated member arranged between said bowl and nicotine chamber, a smoke passageway arranged in said head and in communication with said nicotine chamber a stem detachably connected to said head and having a bore therein in communication with said passageway in said head, said head also having a nicotine passageway in communication with said nicotine chamber at one end while the opposite end of said nicotine passageway is closed by the end of said stem.

2. A tobacco pipe comprising a head having'a bowl therein, a nicotine chamber arranged below said bowl, a perforated member arranged between said bowl and nicotine chamber a smoke passageway arranged in said head and in communi ation with said nicotine chamber, a stem detachably connected to said head and having a bore therein in communication with said passageway in said head, said head also having a nicotine passageway in communication with said nicotine chamber at one end while the opposite end of said nicotine passageway is closed by the end of said stem, and a plug detachably connected to the lower end of said nicotine chamber for closing the same.

3. A tobacco pipe comprising a head having an enlarged opening formed on one side thereof and a smaller opening formed at the opposite side of said head and in communication with said first mentioned opening, a bowl received in said first men tioned opening, a cylindrical extension formed on said bowl and in communication with said bowl, said cylindrical extension being received in said second mentioned opening, said sleeve having a pair of apertures therein one arranged above the other, a pair of passageways arranged in said head and in communication with the apertures in said sleeve, a stem having a bore therein attached to said head with said bore in communication with one of the passageways while the other passageway is closed by the end of said stem, and a plug detachably connected to the lower end of said sleeve for closing the same.
