Description

NI. MENDEL.
Cap. N 160,452 Patented March 2, I875.
MMQMM JMWM.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
MOSES MENDEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ADOLPH SOEIWARZ.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAPS.
Specifisafion forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,452, dated March 2, 1875; application filed February 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mosns MENDEL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gap; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a front view of my invention as used in cold and stormy weather. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same put up for use in warm or clear weather. Fig.3 is a perspective view of the same when spread or unfolded.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a cap or headcovering provided with car and neck muffs having suitable fa-stenings, and made in such a form or shape that when the cap is to be used in cold or stormy weather the ear and neck muffs can be wrapped round the neck and the lower part of the face, and then fastened, so as to protect the ears, the neck, and the throat against the influence of cold; and if the cap is to be used in warm or clear weather the ear and neck muffs can be wrapped round the crown of the cap, and then fastened in position, and the article thus transformed forms a convenient travelin g-ca p.
In the drawing, the letter A designates my cap, which is provided with car and neck mufisB B. The shape of these ear and neck muffs is best seen in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and said muffs are provided at their ends with a loop, 11, and button b, or with any other suitable fastening, so that when the cap is put on,
and the muffs are wrapped round the neck and the lower portion of the face, their ends can be readily connected, as shown in Fig. 1, and thereby the head, the ears, the neck, and the lower portions of the face are protected against the influence of the weather. On one of the muffs B is also secured a button, 0, (see Fig. 2;) and if my cap is to be rigged up for wear in fair weather, or as a traveling-cap in railroad-cars, I wrap the muffs B B round the crown of the cap. as shown in Fig. 2, and by causing the loop I) to engage with the button 0 the said muffs are securely retained in position, and as the same encircle the crown of the cap several times they form a sort of cush ion, so that the person wearing the cap can rest his head against the back of the seat or against the side of a railroad-car without bein g inconvenienced by the motion of the car.
The mutls B B may be firmly attached to the cap A, or they may be fastened thereto by buttons or other fastenings, so that one or both can be taken off, if desired.
I do not claim a cap having a band or muff connected therewith for protecting the ears against cold, as such is old and well known; but
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The muffs B B, forming a continuation of the back and side portions of the cap A, and provided with the fastenings b b c, as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
MOSES MENDEL.
