I. G. STRAUSS KNITTED CAP Filed April 10, 1924 INVENTOR.

KNITTED CA1.
Application filed April 10, 1924.
This invention relates to improvements in knitied caps and more particularly to caps of the type which are n'ovided with bands adapted to be pulled down to protect the ears and neck of the wearer.
in knitted caps of the pull down type considerable strain is exerted upon the front edges of the flaps forming part of the band and also at their points of connection with the body of the cap, with the result that the caps often tear along these lines. Furthermore, the portions of the body of the cap enclosed by the hand and the ed 'es of the flaps, tend to or bulge ontwarcly, with the result that th cap does not present a trim appearance in use.
it is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a li'nitted cap which is reinforced at the points subjected to the greatest strains.
A further object of the invention is to provide a knitted cap which. provided with reinforcenients which also assist in holding the body of the cap in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a knitted cap having means for holding the flaps or ends of the pull down hand of the cap in their upper position and also with means, without the use of a separate flap, for securing the ends of the flaps together when the band is pulled downwa rdly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a knitted cap which is of simple 0l1:-i1i'lt(5ti()11, is strong and durable and is of ornate appearance.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved knitted cap and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
in the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. l is a front view of the improved knitted cap with the pull down band shown secured in its upper position;
Fig. 2 is a top view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a front view of the cap with the band shown in its pulled down position and the flaps secured together; and
Fig. t is a rear view of the cap with the hand in its lower position.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals 8 and 9 indicat c the front and rear body sec- Serial No. 705.680.
tions which are sewed together transversely of the cap by a seam 10. The lower part of line of connection is knitted with what in.
the runnein-lature of the art is called a cuff "1 h to form a relatively thinner and r ore elastic connecting portion. By forming the edge in this manner the line of the .l! 1
io n is also indicated, the manufacture ex 'xedited and a form fitting construction is provided which will closely fit the head of the wearer and at the same time easily give and be more comfortable to wear. The rear body section 9 of the cap is formed with an integ a-l rear band it which is provided with forwardly extending neck flaps 15 integral therewith. Said rear band is also connected to the rear body section by a line of culi' stitching it; in horizontal alinement with and similar to the front band stitching 13, before mentioned. Said neck flaps near their ends have button holes 17 and 17 formed therein to permit the flaps to engage the buttons 1S sewed on the front band 11 when the rear band 1% is in its upper position, as shown in Fig. 1. One of the neck flaps is also provided with a button 18 sewed 011 its inner side with relation to the position of the flaps shown in Fig. 1 which is engaged by the button-hole 17 of the opposite flap when the rear band and the flaps are in their lower position to extend around the neck of the wearer.
lhe lower edges and ends of the flaps are rounded and. are provided with strips of reinforcing tape 19 which extend from the upper edges of the flaps to the points of connection of the lower edges of the flaps with the lower edge of the body section of the cap. From the points of connection, the reinforcing strips extend upwardly on the inner side of the body section along the line of scam joining the two sections together, and is sewed thereto to reinforce said points of connection subjected to the greatest strains. The reinforcing strips are secured to the edge portions of the flaps and to the body sections by overcasting or otherwise, and as thus connected, form finished edges for the flaps which prevent their pulling out of shape in use.
Particular attention is directed to the fact that the flaps are knit integral with the rear band and therear body section, and that the complete cap is formed of but two pieces of material.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the knitted cap is of very simple construction and is well adapted for the pur pose described.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A knitted cap, comprising a body portion having a rear band adjustable downwardly to an extended position to cover the ears and neck of the wearer, said band having flaps extending from its opposite ends, means for connecting the flaps together when the band is in its lower position, means for connecting the flaps to the body portion when the band is in its upper position, and reinforcing strips connected to the lower edges of the flaps and extending to the body portion of the cap at the points of junction of the lower edges of the flaps with said body portion, said strios also extending upwardly on the inner side of the body portion and connected thereto.
2. A knitted cap, comprising a body formed of two half sections sewed together with a transverse seam, the front one of said sections having a band portion which is folded over and sewed to the said section while the rear Section is provided with a band portion adjustable to an upper or a lower position, said rear section band having forwardly extendii'ig straight edge flaps connectible to the front band When in their upper position to form in appearance a continuation of the front band and connectible together when in their lower position, and reinforcing strips sewed to the lower edges of the flaps and to the transverse seam portions on the inner side of the body portion,
3. A knitted cap, comprising a body formed of two half sections sewed together with a transverse scam. the front one of said sections having an integral fixed band portion which is folded over and sewed to said section while the rear section is provided with an integral band portion adjustable to an upper or a lower position, said rear section band having forwardly extending flaps provided with button holes, a button sewed to one of the flaps to connect the flaps togetl'ier when in their lower adjusted position. buttons sewed to the front tixed section band to connect the flaps to said band when the flaps are in their upper position to form in pearance a continuation of the fixed band, and reinforcing strips sewed to the ends and lower edge portions of the flaps and also extending upwardly on the inner opposite sides of the body of the cap and sewed thereto.
In testimony whereof, I aliix my signature.
ISAAC Gr. STRAUSS.
