'lhis invention relates to improvements in baseball bats, and has for its object to provide an article of this character reenforced throughout its entire length.
E A further object to provide protective and reenforcing end members.
Another object is an adjustable means to change the center of gravity of the bat.
llasc ball bats of orninary construction are frequently broken in use because of the severe and sudden shock to the wood fibres when striking a swiftly pitched ball. rlhe reenforcing shaft which have provided will in most cases prevent a fracture of this r kind; but should the wood become broken the steel shaft would still hold the parts together and prevent any serious accident, as, for instance, a bystander, or player being hit by theilying end of the ln'oken bat.
'llhe ends of the batare also protected against splitting` and abrasion by the metal *ap .members as illustrated herewith. A better balance is also obtainable through 'the weighting at the bat ends by the said metallic cap members.
The invention also provides an adjustable balance weight which may be set in any desired position.
These and other features and advantages will be shown and described in the accompanying drawings and the following specilication.

Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings; a body 10 has passing through the center thereof a shaft 11, preferably of steel. 'llhis shaft is secured at one end by threaded engagement with a base plate 1Q. which has an elongated boss 13 and is held in position by the screws 111 and 15. At its opposite end the shaft is screwed into another elongated boss 16 on the end cap 17 which is se- Serial No. 101,664.

rllhe end cap as shown in Figure 1 is composed preferably of steel, but may be of any suitable material. lt has a thick and rounded end portion 20, from which the boss 16 extends upward, and cylindrical side walls 2l which encircle the wood portion of the bat.
Referring now, to Figure 2; a different form of end cap is shown, having` ne side walls, but simply the boss 16 and an end member which is concave on the inner, and convex on the outer side, and secured to the wood portion by the screws 23, 2a etc.
ln Figure 3 is shown an end cap 25, preferably of sheet metal, with the boss 16 suitably a`nl ed thereto. This cap has side members as shown as 2i', 23, 29 etc. and having their edges cut in tapered form so that when secured to the bat proper, the said side members are slightly inclined .inward to conform to the contour of the bat and with their edges in coincidence. rlhey are secured to the wood by the screws as shown at 30, 31 etc.
ln the form of construction shown in Figure 5, will be seen an end cap 32, similar to that shown in Figure 1, except for a slightly larger boss member and the perforation 33 which extends therethrough. An inner chamber 34 extends upward from the end of the boss and in this chamber a balance weight 35 is slidably mounted on the shaft 11. This weight may be of iron, lead, or any suitable material. An adjusting rod 36 passes through the balance weight and is in threaded engagement therewith. This rod has a screw head 37 at its base end resting within the recess 38, and at its upper extremity passes through the ring plate 39 and is headed over as shown at l0 to hold it in position. The ring plate 39 is flanged and secured to the shaft 11 as shown at 41.
When assembling; all of the members described in connection with the adjustable balance weight are secured togther and the whole inserted from the hat end; the shaft 11 is then picked up by the boss 13 of the base plate and drawn tightly into place; after which, the screws may be inserted in the walls of the end cap.
To move the balance weight; the rod 36 is turned with a screwdriver, or like instrument.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
l. ln a base ball bat, an elongated body member perforated Centrally throughout its length, a Shaft extending through the said perforation, and the said shaft secured at its ends by threaded engagement with end members, one of which comprises a plate and boss Secured to the body of the bat, and the other, a covering piece concave on its inner Side and having a boss member thereon and also secured to the body oit the Said bat.
2. In a base ball bat, a body member, a rod extending Centrally through the said member and in threaded engagement at one end with a base member and engaging at its other extremity a Cylindrical cap, which Covers the end of the said body member and extends for a space along the sides thereof and is suitably Secured thereto.
3. ln a base ball bat, a body member, a rod extending centrally through the said member and in threaded engagement at one end with a base member, and engaging at its otherI extremity a cap member which Covers the end of the body of the bat and is provid ed Wit-h side pieces Whieh extend along the Sides of the said bat and are suitably secured thereto.
4. ln a base ball bat7 a body member, a rod extending Centrally through the said member and in threaded engagement at one end with a base member, and engaging at its other extremity a Cap member, an elongated inner chamber in the body of the said bat, a balance Weight within the said Chamber and slidably mounted on the Said Centra-l rod, and an adjusting screw member in threaded engagement with tne said balance Weight and paseing` through the body olr the said cap member, and means to turn the said screw to move the said balance Weight.
