UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BATTIS, 2D, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
, IMPROVEMENT lN ClGAR-BUNCHING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,380, dated March 2, 1875 application filed August 18, 1874.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BATTIS, 2d, of Salem,in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Bunching and Pressing Cigars, of which. the following is a specification:
This invention has for its object the bunching and pressing, 'so called, of cigars; and consists of a block having one or more openings for the reception of cigars and of a follower, by which, pressure being applied, the cigars can be pressed into the form and shape desired.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my invention is illustrated, Figure 1 being a plan View, and Fig. 2 a partial vertical section and a front view.
A, in the drawings, represents a block of wood, having openings B for the reception of cigars; O, a follower, arranged to fit the opening B; D, a bar, which is free to turn on the screw E in block A, and of sufficient length to extend across and a little beyond the two openings B.
The requisite number of cigars for a bunch, say twenty-five, being placed upon the string or ribbon in which they are to be secured, the two ends of the ribbon are then brought together, and all placed in one of the openings B. The other opening having been filled in a similar manner, the followers 0 are then placed in the openings and on the cigars, the bar D turned so as to extend on top and across the two followers, and the desired pressure is given to the cigars by the screw E. Now release the screw, turn the bar out of the Way, remove the followers, and, giving the proper twist to the string a, the bunch of cigars is then removed and placed in the box.
By this invention cigars can be bunched and pressed in a much easier, quicker, better, more convenient and economical manner, and by it, also, all the bunches will be of the same size, thereby presenting a much neater appearance in the box when exposed for sale; and, also, by this invention, sufficient pressure being applied, the cigars can readily be shaped to imitate and represent cigars of foreign manufacture, such as, for instance, Figaros, which are somewhat square or oblong in cross-section.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The block A, constructed with the openings B, for the reception of the cigars to be bunched and pressed, in combination with the followers 0 0, horizontal bar D, resting on the follower, and the vertical screw E, passing through the bar and into the block A, for pressing the cigars, as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 11th day of May, A. D. 187;.
JOHN BATTIS, 2D.
