The seal is customarily provided With embossed or stamped characters indicating the transportation line, as the initials l?. R. R., and other characters identifying the particular car, as the number 9827.
I prefer to place one at least of the numerals forming the number identifying the particular car, on the foldable portion of the seal, so that if said portion is broken olf the completeness of the identifying number is destroyed.
1 have shown the body of the seal formed With a tongue, 13, parallel With the shank, 7, but said tongue may be omitted if desired. 1f desired the keepers or buttons, 5, may be omitted and the seal alone relied upon for preventing removal of the hasp from the staple, 3.
As the seal is preferably made of quite thin sheet metal, l prefer to rely upon the keepers or buttons, 5, for securing the hasp upon the'staple.
The sheet metal may be weakened along the lines of bend of the tongues, 9 and 11, and along the line of fold, 10, by scoring the metal or by means of slots, 14, or in any other known manner whereby the plie-.bility of the metal at these lines of bend and fold can'be limited to the degree above. set forth.

ln Fig. 6, l have shown a modified form of seal embodying my invention, the seal comprising 'a body longitudinally slitted at 14, to form twoV legs or branches, v15 and 16, the branch, 15, having atits end a Wing, 17, foldable along the line, 1S, and the member, 16, having brazed or Welded thereto a crosspiece, 19, formed With a. vertical slot, 20, adapted to permit the passage therethrough of the end of leg, 15, with the Wing, 17, folded over thereupon as yshovvn in Fig. 7.
In applying the seal, one of the branches or legs, 15, 16, is passed through the staple, 3, of the locking mechanism after which the leg, 15, With the Wings, 17, folded over thereupon is passed through the slot, 20, and the Wing, 17, is unfolded toits original position in the plane of the body of the seal.
The leg, 15, cannot thereafter be Wthl drawn from the opening, 20, in the locking mechanism thus provided Without refolding the Wing, 17, upon the leg, 15; and by making the sheet material along the fold line, 18, of suoli limited pliability as to permit the same to` be folded only once, such refolding cannot be accomplished Without destroying the seal. v
1n Fig. 8 l have shown another form of seal embodying the invention comprising a sheet metal body longitudinally slitted 21, to form tvvo branches or legs, 22, 23, one, 23, of which has at` its end an L-shaped off. set, 24, provided vvithr a vertical slot, 25, and the other, 22, of Which is formed With an extension, 22a, secured to the leg, 22, by means of an integral loop or tongue, 26, insertedI through an aperture, 27, in the leg, 22, and Welded or brazed to said leg.
The extension, 22"?, has a Wing, 28, foldable over thereupon along the longitudinal line, 29, and said extension and Wing are of such dimensions that when the Wing is so folded they can be passed through the slot, 25, in the offset, 24, of the member, 28.
In applying the seal, one of the legs, 22, 28, is passed through the staple of the locking mechanism, the extension, 22a, with the Wing, 28, folded over thereupon is then passed through the slot, 25, in the offset, 24, after Which the Wing, 28, is unfolded or opened out to its original position in the plane of the body of the seal in substantially the same manner as the seal shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and is applied.
The metal along the fold line, 29, is of the limited degree of pliability above described With respect to the seal shown in the other figures.
Ido not Wish to be limited to the constructions shoWn and above described, as, for oer* tain purposes of the invention, various changes may be made in the form and arrangement of various parts of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention.

A device of the class described having a member of sheet material foldable to a form and size insert-ible through an aperture in a locking mechanism and incapable When unfolded of Withdrawal from said aperture, said sheet material being of such limited plia-bility at the fold line as to permit of being folded and unfolded once only, said fold line being visible on the face of the device When unfolded to locking position.
2. A device of the class described having a shank insertible through an aperture in a locking mechanism, and at one end of said shank means for preventing Withdrawal thereof in one direction, and at the other end of said shank a member of sheet materia-l foldable to a form and size insertible through an aperture in a locking mechanism and incapable When unfolded of Withdrawal from said aperture, said sheet material being of such, limited pliability at the fold line as to permit of being folded and unfolded once only, said fold line being Visible on the face of the device when unfolded to locking position.
8. A device of the class described having a shank insertible through an aperture in locking mechanism, and at one end of said shank means for preventing Withdrawal thereof in one direction, and at the other end of said shank a member of sheet material foldable to a form and size insertible through an aperture in a locking mechanism, and when unfolded serving to lock said shank against Withdrawal in the opposte direction, and having a tongue bendable along a line at right angles to the fold line of said member to a position to lock said shank against Withdrawal in said opposite direct-ion, said sheet material being of such limited pliability at said fold line and said line of bend as to permit of said member and said tongue being folded or bent to locking position once only.
