HEADREST SUPPORTING AND ADJUSTING APPARATUS.

My invention relates to improvements in chair back and head rest supporting and adjusting apparatus. One of its objects is to provide an improved head-restsupporting and adjusting apparatus applied to a chair back. Another object is to provide for applying a head-rest apparatus to a chair back, having an enameled metal frame in which is mounted an upholstered chair back center. Another object is to provide a combined chair back and head-rest supporting and adjusting apparatus. Another object is to provide in connection with a chair back an improved headrest supporting and adjusting apparatus. Another object is to provide in connection with a chair back an improved headrest supporting and adjusting apparatus adapted to be constructed chiefly from stamped metal members. My invention also comprises certain details of form and combination and arrangement of components7 all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying dra-wings, in

which 15 represents an annular metal chair' back frame of angular crossl section, which is designed to be enamel finished. An upholstering frame 16 preferably of wood is first provided at its front face with an upholstering pad 17 faced with leather or simi-` lar upholstering material. The rear face of the frame 16 is. also provided with an irregular shaped recess 18 to receive the shank 19 of a head-rest 20, and to receive the headrestsnpporting and adjusting members to be carried by the chair back, before the upholstering frame 16 is introduced into the chair back frame 15 and secured thereto.
The head-rest supporting and adjusting members comprise a plate 22 provided at opposite ends with inwardly directed projections 24C and 26, having perforations 27 and 28 therein to serve as vertical. guides for the shank 19 of a head-rest. I' preferably provide a shank having polygonal faces, and corresponding polygonal faced recesses to thereby prevent the shank from moving rotatably within the recesses 27 and 28. The plate is secured over the rear face of the wider portion of the recess 18 and is rigidly secured` in place by means of screws passed through perforations in the ears 29 at the four corners of the plate 22 and into the frame 16. The plate 22 is also provided with a tongue 30 projecting` partly into the recess 18 and to which a latch or locking mem- Y ber 82 is pivotally attached substantially midway thereof.
The latch member 32 is provided with a polygonal recess 84 through which the shank 19 of the head rest passes7 and in which said shank has a relatively close sliding fit when the latch member lies in a substantially horizontal plane. c Vhen the latch member 32 is canted or tilted into a substantially inclined plane the latchmember 32 acts to lock the shank 19 against movementrendwise relative to the chair back. At the opposite end` of the latch member v32 from the recess 3A is a pin or stud 36 which enters the upper end of a coiled spring 37, which is seated in a cylindrical portion 38 of the recess 18, to thereby normally tilt the latch member 82 upwardly into an inclined position within the recess 18. A push button 40 is seated above the latch member 32 opposite the stud 86 and spring 87 in a branch 42 of the recess 18 vwith the'upper end of the push button proje-cting through a perforation lil `in the top of vthe frame 15 and extendingv above the.

When it is desired to release the shank 19 from the plate 22 for the purpose of detaching the head-rest from the chair back, or to secure a` higher orilower position-of adjustment. for the head-restrelative to the chair back, the operator pushes the push button 40 downwardly against the action of the spring `37 with one hand while` with the-other hand he either adjusts or removes the head-rest. As soon as pressure on the push button 40 ,isreleased the latch member 82 automatically returns to an inclined position to latch the head-rest to-its new position of adjustment,.which it retains until the push button Y is;y again depressed.
Apiece of upholstering material is fitted over the rear face ofthe frame -16 to conceal the` plate22 and recess 18 previously to fitting the frame 16 into the frame 15. The shank 19 may be cylindrical instead of polygonalif desired. The plate 22 and latch membery 32 are both adapted to be constructed by stamping from .sheet met-al,

My improved vhead-rest support lends itself to convenient assembly and operation in connection with a metal chair back frame, and is compact and adapted to he entirely housed within the upholsteringframe with the eX- ceptionof the head of the push button.V
