Description

Oct. 5 1926.
G. B. GORDON NAIL EXPANSION ANCHOR Filed August 25, 1923' INVENTOR 63 60111010 6 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 5, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. GORDON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGN OR TO AMERICAN TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH COMPANY, A CORPORATION OFxNEW YORK.
NAIL EXPANSION 'ANGHOR.
This invention relates to nail expansion anchors and is embodied in a novel device for securing cable clamps and other devices to masonry. The object of the invention is 6 to provide an improved and simple, economical means of accomplishing the above named result.
Applicants device is a hollow cylinder, whiohmay be made from sheet metal, and
10 is so formed as to' have considerable strength and the desired holding power. In the accompanying drawing, 'Fig. 1 .shows the nail which is driven into the anchor; Fig. 2 shows in cross-section one desirable form of applicants improve-d anchor; and Fig. 3 shows a top plan view corresponding to Fig. 2.
With reference to the details of Figs. 2
and 3 of the drawing, the cylinder 1 is. parted by the longitudinal slot 2, which extends over the entire length of the cylinder and permits the anchor to expand and to become adjusted to variations in the diameter of I the drilled hole. The top of the cylinder, 3, is flared out to form a collar for olding the clamp or other device to the wall. The
lower part oi the cylinder 1 is ,formed to reduce materially the diameter of the center hole, and the bottom of the cylinder wall is 80 bent back upon itself at 4. When the point of the nail enters the portion of the anchor having the reduced diameter, it expands the anchor and causes the lower portion of the same to grip the surface of the hole in the masonry, thus producing the'desired lateral pressure. The upper edge of the bent back portion of the cylinder wall may be rounded so as to facilitate the removal of the expansion anchor from the drilled hole if occasion arises for such operation 7 It is understood that the drawing discloses one desirable form of applicants anchor merely for purposes of illustratiomand does not limit the scope of the invention, which is determined by theappended claims.
What is claimedis: i 1. An expansion anchor consisting of a hollow cylinder parted by a single longitudinal slot extending over its entire length, the top of said cylinder being flared, the mid- 50 dle portion of said cylinder being tapered, and the bottom of said cylinder being'bent back upon itself. 2. An expansion-anchor consisting of a hollow. cylinder parted by a single longitu- 55 dinal slot extendin over. its entire length, the top of said cylin er being flared, the middle portion of said cylinder being tapered, the bottom of said cylinder being ben back outwardl upon itself,,and the extremity of 6 the bent- 'ackportion being rounded.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my 'name to this specification'this 22nd 'day of August, 1923. r
" GEORGE B. GORDON.
