Application led December This invention relates to nailing machines and is herein exemplified in a machine for nailing heels Vupon shoes, although the field of'utility of the invention is not limited to machines for performing this particular nailing operation. A
lIn the copending application of Joseph H. Pope, Serial No. 612,254, filed January 12, 1923, there is disclosed and claimed an improved nailing die which actual use in `shoe manufacture has shown to 'possess marked advantages over devices formerly used for similar purposes. It is the object of the present invention further to develop the invention of the said application, with a view to increasing the facility with which a nailing machine in which it is incorporated may be accommodated to work of different sizes or work requiring different nailings. Y i i For the accomplishment of the above stated object the invention provides, in combination with a gang of vnail drivers the nail yengaging ends ofvwhichkare movable into a plurality of different nailing patterns, a carrier provided with a plurality of different, vnail driver controlling, pattern elements and movable, independently ofthe nail drivers, to place any selected one of pattern elements in coi-operative relation to the drivers. By. incorporatingja series of driver controlling pattern elements in the organization of the machine and `making provision for their ready and'selective interchangeability the Vchange in the setting of the machine necessary to change it from one nailing to anotheris made possible of accomplishment in a few seconds, a period of time so brief as to have .practically no retarding e'ect upon the production of work by the machine.
In the illustrative Yembodiment ofthe invention herein shown, the movable carrier consists of a rotary, turret in which the driver guiding pattern elements are formed or mounted, the axis of rotation of the said turret Vbeing so located that any one of the pattern members, each of which is shown as comprising' a. set of guide holes, may be readily moved into guiding vrelation to the nail drivers.

Referring now to the drawings, 10 indicates a die block havingprojecting tongues v12 at its sides by which it is supported in the guides provided for that purpose in the frame'14 of a heeling machine which m-ay 'be of the same general type of construction as that disclosed in the prior patent to J. H. Pope, No. 1,431,980, dated October 17, 1922, to which reference may be had for a more complete disclosure of the details of the heeling machine structure which are not illustrated in the present drawings."
The die block is chambered to provide an open space 16 extending entirely through it and a group of driver guiding tubes 18, supported by ball'and socket mountings 20 is located within the space 16; The mountings of the guide tubes 18 are arranged to register with the nail drivers 22 so that when the drivers are lowered each driver shall enter its corresponding guide.
The mountings 20 of the guides 18 permit the nozzle ends of the guides to be swung into-various positions, to produce different nailing patterns, and the drivers 22 are suf-L iiciently resilient to follow the ideflected guides easily. In order to control thev movement of the drivers into different vpredetermined nailing patterns, a plurality of different pat- Vsection on the line tern elements 2l are provided. As shown, each of these pattern elements comprises a plate 26 provided with a series of tapered holes 28, the centers of which are arranged inl the pattern of a desired nailing. lt will be understood that the nozzle ends ot the guide tubes 18, entering the holes 28, are thereby positioned in accordance with the nailing pattern which it is desired to produce.

The holes or openings 28 are suificiently tier-ed -or tapered so that the guide tubes 18 automatically nd their positions when the turret is elevated after it hasbeen depressed to permit a desired pat-tern controlling and heel holding unit to be placed inl oper.- ative relation to the drivers, and the range ot angular movement ot the-guide tubes is, or may be such that a complete, ordinary range oit sizes and nailings may be covered with one set of guides. ln the illustrated machine, tor example, provision is made for eleven different sizes and nailings without the necessity ot detaching any part of the machine and replacing it by another.
