Description

THOMAS MOQUARY, OF DAVIESS COUNTY, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO SAMUEL J. HARRIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PCRTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,952, dated February 16, 1375; application filed November 6, 1874. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS McQUARY, of Daviess county, in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description. thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fence composed of a series of separate and independent panels, connected by top and bottom caps, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of detached parts of the fence. Fig. 2 is a plan viewof a section of fence set up, with the top caps taken oh; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same.
Each panel of my fence is composed of a series of horizontal boards or planks,'A A, fastened to a post, B, at each end, said posts being on opposite sides of the panel, asshown. The outer side of each post B is more or less beveled, and the ends of the planks cut or beveled to correspond therewith. The ends of the posts 13 B are formed with round tenons we, the lower ones of which are inserted in bottom caps or foot-pieces c 0. Each footpiece has two holes to receive the bottom tenons of the posts of two adjoining panels, and the upper tenons of said posts are connected by similar caps or top pieces, D. When the panels are thus united they are to be turned until the beveled sides of the adjoining posts butt against each other, thereby forming what is known as a worm-fence. The greater the bevel of the posts the more angle the fence will have.
The fence may be made straight, square, or any other desired form. If the fence is made straight the panels must be fastened to the ground by stakes I) through the foot-pieces G. No fastening to the ground is necessary, except When the fence is made straight, or nearly so, or when a gate is needed.
Any panel may be used a gate by fastening the foot-pieces at both ends of such panel to the ground by stakes, and removing the top cap D at one end, when this panel will turn in the foot-piece and top cap at the other end as on a hinge.
Each panel may have a center batten or board, E, nailed to the horizontal boards A, if desired.
This fence can be made entirely within doors and hauled to the place where needed ready to be put up. It is easily put up and taken down without injury to any part.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the horizontal boards AA, end posts B B, beveled as described, and provided with tenons aa, foot-pieces c c, and top caps D D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
THOMAS McQUARY. Attest:
