This invention. relates to a novel and improved car dumper of-the rotating, cradle type, and will be best, understood by reference. to the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying: drawings of one illustrative embodiment thereof,'while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

which normally occu- -t1on,;. as represented in Fig. 2, is appropriately mounted for vertical and swinging movement by mounting the same on a pivot 29 carried by an appropriate carrier, herein a slide 30, which is guided by normally vertical guides 31 presented by the cradle. This carrier has an abutment 32, which, when the carrier is lowered sufiiciently, rests upon the upper edge of the car, as represented in Fig. 3, thus stopping the downward movement of the carrier, as well as serving as a part of the clamping means.
The clamp is controlled by a clamp-con trolling cable 33, which as shown in Fig. 2 is secured to the clamp, and leads in an upward direction over a sheave wheel 34, thence in a horizontal direction to and over a sheave wheel 35, thence in a downward direction over a sheave wheel 36, thence in an upward direction over a sheave wheel 37 (see Fig. 9), whence it leads in a downward direction to and about a clamp-controlling, cable-winding drum 88. A weight 39, supported by the sheave wheel 36, serves to tension the cable. The ascent of this weight is limited by a fixed stop presented by the framework. )Vhen the drum 38 is rotated in the proper direction to pay out the cable, the clamp and its slides are permitted to descend until the stop carried by the slide rests upon the top of the car, whereupon the weight 39 will descend from the stop 40 and the clamp will commence to swing about its pivot from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that which is represented in Fig. 3.
The cradle rotating means will now be described, reference being had at first to Fig. 1. Each wheel 13 presents two grooves 41 for cradle rotating cables 42, each of which is dead-ended at 43 on the cradle, and is provided with a turnbuckle 44 for adjustment of its tension. The ropes lead across each other (see Fig. 2), and are wound in opposite directions about a drum 45 (see Fig. 1). Each of these drums is suitably rotated, as by be ing provided with a spur gear 46, which, as shown in F ig. 2, meshes with and is driven by a pinion L7 secured to a shaft 48, to which is also secured the clamp-controlling, cablewinding drum 38. By this means, the operations of the cradle-rotating means and the car-clamping means are coordinated, and rotation of the cradle from its normal position is accompanied by engagement of the carclamping means with the car. There is a differential action between the cables 33 and 42,that is to say, the cable 33 is paid out and wound in faster than the cable 42, as a result of which the clamp continues to rest upon and hold the car until, following the dumping operation and during the restoration to the normal position, the ascent of the weight 39 is stopped by the stop 40, whereupon the shoulder 32of the clamping means rises out of engagement with the car.
Herein, the car-clamping means is rendered doubly effective by the use of a carclamping cable 49 (see Fig. 2), which is dead-ended at 50 on the framework, and leads therefrom between a small sheave wheel 51 and a large sheave wheel 52 carried by the clamp 28; thence over another sheave wheel 53 mounted on and concentric with the pivot 29, thence over a sheave wheel 54; carried by the car-receiving cradle, thence horizontally over another sheave wheel carried by said cradle, thence in an upward direction over a sheave wheel 56 mounted on the framework 11, thence horizontally over a second sheave wheel 57 on said framework, and finally in a clownward direction. A weight 58, secured to the free end of the cable serves to maintain the cable properly tensioned. It will be ob served that this cable partially encompasses the car. When, therefore, the cradle starts to rotate from its normal position, represented in Fig. 4, after a short angular movement of the cradle, the car-clamping cable starts to wrap about the car, so to speak. At first, the cable, by engagement with the sheave wheels 52 and 53, swings the carclamp 28 through the successive positions represented in Figs. 5 and 6 to that which is shown in Fig. 7, wherein itis clamped against the car top.
During the early part of these movements, the cable is assisted by the action of gravity (see Figs. 5 and 6), but before the position shown in Fig. 7 is reached, the force applied to the clamp is furnished jointly by the cables 4-9 and and from then on to the dumping position illustrated in Fig. 8. Toward the end of this movement (i. e.: after reaching the position shown in Fig. 7), the car-clamping cable leaves the sheave wheel 55, and does notreengage the same until the cradle, during its reverse rotation, reaches the same point.
The general operation should be evident without further description, but will be reviewed briefly. Assuming the cradle to be in its normal position, the loaded car is run into place, and power is applied to the shaft 48 on the driving mechanism. The cradle starts to rotate contraclockwise, as viewed in Fig. 4-, and the clamp and its carrier start to descend. The car moves laterally into engagement with the stop, which arrests its movement, and the clamp then descends upon the car, assisted by the clamping cable, which becomes wrapped about the clamp and car. until finally the dumping position shown in Fig. 8 is reached, thus discharging the contents of the car. At this point, the direction of rotation of the driving mechanism is reversed, and the car is restored to its normal position by a reversal of the foregoing operations, after which the empty car is removed from the cradle,

In a car damper, the combination of a car track; a track carrying cradle mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis within the car-receiving space; cradle rotating means; a car clamp; a car clamp lifting cable; a car clamp lifting cable winding drum; means connecting and coordinating the operations of said cradle rotating means with said drum to cause rotation of said cradle from its normal position to be accompanied by engagement of said clamp with the car; a car clamping cable; and means to cause said car clamping cable and said clamp-lifting cable to hold said clamp in engagement with the car.
14. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving and dumping cradle, and car clamping instrumentalities comprising clamping means, a controlling cable for said clamping means, a tensioning weight for said cable, and a stop which limits the ascent of said weight and causes said clamping means to release the car.
15. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving and dumping cradle, cradle inverting means including a cable, car clamping instrumentalities comprising clamping means, a controlling cable for said clamping means, and means for causing a differential action between said cables.
16. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving and dumping cradle, cradle inverting means including a cable,'car clamping instrumentalitiescomprising clamping means, a controlling cable for said clamping means, a tensioning weight for the lastmentioned cable, a stop which limits the ascent of said weight and causes said clamping means to release the car, and means for causing a diiterential action between said cables.
17. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving cradle mounted to rotate about alongitudinal axis within the carreceiving space, and car-clamping means including a clamp-setting cable having a bight about the car-receiving space.
18. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving cradle mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis within the carreceiving space, and car-clamping means including a clamp above the car-receiving space, and a clamp-setting rope extending from said clamp in a downward direction on one side of the car-receiving space, thence beneath and across the car-receiving space, and thence in an upward direction on the other side of the car-receiving space.
19. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving cradle mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis within the car-receiving space, and car-clamping means including a clamp above the car-receiving space, and a clamp-setting rope extending from said clamp in a downward direction 011 one side of the car-receiving space, thence between and across the car-receiving space, thence in an upward direction on the other side of the car-receiving space, and thence in a downward direction, and a weight attached to the last-mentioned portion of said cable.
20. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving cradle mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis within the car-receiving space, and car-clamping means including a clamp-setting cable having a bight about the car-receiving space, a clamp attached to one end of said cable and a weight attached to the other end of said cable.
21. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving cradle mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis within the car-receiving space, and car-clamping means including sheave wheels carried by said cradle below the car-receiving space, a sheave wheel extraneous to said cradle, a clamp above the car-receiving space, and a clamp-setting cable attached to said clamp and extending over saidisheave-wheels in succession in the order named.
22. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving cradle mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis within the car receiving space; cradle rotating means; and car-clamping instrumentalities including two cables which cooperate to clamp the car in place, a motor for operating one of said cables, and tensioning means for such cable.
23. In a car dumper, the combination of a car-receiving cradle mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis Within the car-receiving space; cradle-rotating means; a and carclamping instrumentalities including a car clamp, two cables one of which lifts said car clamp and both of which cooperate to cause said car-clamp to clamp the car in place, a drum on which said car clamp 1ifting cable is Wound, a motor for rotating said drum; and a weight supported by one end of the other cable and constantly tensioning the latter.
