The invention relates to liquid distributing apparatus and is here more particularly shown and described for use in a dish washing machine.
In order to distribute a spray over a large area it is the object of this invention to impart a rotary movement to the spray distributing member assaid member moves in a circular path and at intervals reverse the direction of movement in this circular path by tipping the spray nozzle. In this way the spray covers a large area and efliciently washes the dishes. y
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the spray nozzle is tilted automatically during its rotation and preferably by means of an un-' balanced force.
-A further object of the invention. is to .provide a construction in which the spray nozzle is automatically tilted by an unbalanced force produced by a part of the water being conducted to the nozzle.

The numeral 5 designates a casing having a bottom 6 and hooks 7 to support a removable cover 8 and a Wire dish-supporting basket 9.- 1
A distributor 10 is swiveled on a nipple 11 in the end of a pipe 12 forming part of a rotary support swiveled on a nipple 13 mounted on the end of a vertically disposed supply pipe 14 which projects up through the bottom 6 of the casing and is preferably located in the center of said bottom; Water under pressure-from the pipe 14 is conducted through the swivel joint between the pipes 14 and 12 to said pipe 12 and through the swivel joint between the pipe 12 and the distributor to a horizontally disposed pipe- 15 of the distributor.
In addition to the pipe 12 the rotary support includes a rod 16 having a weight 17 adjustably mounted thereon, the side of 'said support carrying said weight preferablycounterbalancing the weight of the be adjusted to provide an unbalanced support if desired. v
The pipe-'15 of the distributor communicates with a nozzle member 18 having threaded engagement therewith so that it may be turned with respectthereto to change the angle of direction of the water issuing from the nozzle 19.011 said member, said nozzle 19 being inclined'to either side of a vertical position duringthe operation of the device as hereinafter described.
The pipe 15 carries a rod 20 upon which arms 21 are swingingly mounted intermediate theirends, which arms are'connected to small tanks 22 and 22'. ,These tanks 22 and 22' are connected together at their front ends by a member 23 which is connected to or formed integral with the nozzle member 18 so thatthe tipping of the tanks tips the nozzle 19. ,The arms 21 and'tanks 22 and 22' form a tiltable frame.
vertical hole 24 in said pipe and guiding it by a deflector 25 on each tank to an opening 26 in each tank from which it discharges in the tank then in raised position as shown in Fig. 4, while the excess of water in the lower tank has been allowed to escape through an outlet or drain 27 in that tank, both tanks being provided with a similar drain.
The passage of water through the drains 27 of the tanks is automatically controlled by valve means here shown as being-formed by a plate 28 centrally mounted on a pin 29 journalled in the rear arm 21', which late is yieldingly .held in engagement. with t e rear ends of the tanks 22 and22 by means of a' spring 30 mounted on the pin 29 and interposed between said arm-21and a collar 31 carried by said rod. This plate 28 1s shifted to alternately uncover the drains for the jections 33 and 33'. The tilting of the tanks is limited by a stop member 34 secured in vertical position upon the rod and carrying a; rubber bumper 35.
The weight oft-hat portion of the distributor carrying the nozzle 19 is less than that on the other side of the swivel joint of said distributor but these weights may be made equal if desired. The overbalanced relationlof the distributor with relation to its support is desirable, however, as it produces a retarding effect upon the rotation of the distributor so that itrotates more slowly and thus distributes the water "more efiicientlyr Adrain 36 is located near the bottom of i the casing 5 to conduct waste water from the tat-ion of the distributor with respect to said rotary support in which a retarding efiect is produced upon the rotation of said support. Thus, when the nozzleis turning from the positionshown in Fig. 1 to a position at right angles to the pipe 12 in a right-handed direction, a positive rotative-impulse is imparted to the rotary support in that direction, but as it moves from this position inwardly toward parallel relation with the pipe 12 there is a retarding action imparted to the rotation of the rotary support. By this action the revoluble support is given a jerky action with the rotating effect of the distributor together with its support predominating in one direction, which action allows the jet issuing from the nozzle 19 to play upon the dishes in-the basket above for a longer period of time and covers a larger area than would be the case if the distributor were directly mounted upon the supply pipe. This action takes place when the nozzle is disposed to either side of vertical position.
In order that after the rotary'support has been rotated in. one direction it-may be reversed to rotate in the opposite direction, the nozzle 19 is first tipped to one side of the vertical andallowed to remain in this position for a certain period and is-then automatically tipped to the other side of the vertical and remains in this position for a certain periods This is accomplished by'filling one tank while draining the other.
Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3,;in which instance the nozzle 19 will beinclined toward the left, that is, toward the side carrying the lower tank 22', and the lowering of the tank 22 has moved the valve plate to a position to bring it into engagement with the stop projection 33' and said plate has been swung to jacent to said opening. As soon as enough Water has been admitted to the tank 22 to overbalance'the tanksas shown in Fig. 4,
then the heavier tank 22 moves the li hter tank 22' upwardly while it swings ownwardly and the nozzle is swungitoward the right to inclined position, that is, toward the side carrying the then lower tank 22. During the downward movement of the tank 22 the plate 28 is moved out of engagement with projection 33'- and into engagement with projection 33, which then shifts the plate so that the opening 27 of the tank 22' 15 covered while the opening 27 of the tank 22 is opened. Then tank 22' fills up while tank 22 is draining until it becomes heavier than tank 22 and moves down to the position shown in Fig. 3, shifting the valve plate 28 in the manner above described.
The reverse of the inclination of the nozzle depends upon the time it takes to fill one tank with water enough to overbalance the other and during this .time the distributor rotates upon and rotates the rotary sup ort in one direction and then on arevorsa of the nozzle the distributor rotates upon and rotates the rotary support in the opposite direction. The extent of rotary movement of the rotary support in either direction depends upon the' time required to efiect tiltin of the nozzle, and this time may be ma e sufiicient for only a partial rotation or for more than a single rotation of the rotary support upon the supply pipe.
I am aware that the reversal of the nozzle may be effected by other constructions differing specifically from that shown and I therefore desire it to be understood that this invention is not limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts except 1n so far as such limitations are specified in the claims. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i 1. In a liquid distributing device, the combination, with a supply pipe, a rotary support mounted thereon 'and having a pipe section communicating. therewith, a rotary distributor eccentrically rotatably mounted on said sup ort and having a pipe section communicating with the pipe section of said support, and means for conducting the liquid from the pipe section of the distributor 2. In a liquid distributing device, the combination, with a supply pipe, -a rotary support mounted thereon and having a pipe section communicating therewith, a rotary distributor eccentrically rotatably mounted on said support and having a pipe section com municating with the pipe section of' said support and provided with a nozzle, and
means for tilting said nozzle to either side of vertical position to rotate said distributor and also the support in reverse directions for certain periods.
3. In a liquid distributing device, the
combination, with a vertical supply pipe, of a horizontally disposed support mounted to rotate on said pipe and having a pipe section communicating therewith, a horizontally disposed distributing pipe mounted on said pipe section beyond the-center of said support and carrying a movable discharge nozzle which when directed laterally to either side of vertical position will permit the liquid issuing therefrom to rotate. both the distributor and said support, and means for automatically tilting the nozzle to either side of vertical position durin such rotation to reverse the direction 0 rotation of said dstributor and support at predetermined intervals.
4. In a liquid distributing device, the com-.
bination, with a vertical supply pipe, of a horizontally disposed support mounted to rotate on said pipe and having a pipe section communicating therewith, a horizontally disposed distributing pipe mounted on said pipe section beyond the axis of said support and carrying a movable discharge nozzle adapted to be laterally inclined to permit the liquid issuing therefrom to rotate both position to cause the liquid issuing there-- irom under pressureto rotate the distributor, and means for reversing'the inclination of the nozzle including a tank on eachside of said nozzle and connected thereto, and means for alternately filling one tank while draining the other to produce an unbalanced force acting to tip the nozzle laterally toward the heavier tank at predetermined intervals.
6. In a liquid distributing device, the combination, with'a vertically disposed supply .pipe, a horizontally disposed fluid conductor mounted to rotate on said pipe, a horizontally disposed rotary distributing pipe eccentrically mounted on said conductor and carrying a nozzle movable with respect to said distributing pipe to a laterally inclined position, and means for reversing the incli-.
nation of the nozzle including a tank'on eachside of said nozzle and connected thereto, and means for alternately filling one tank while draining the other to produce an unbalanced force acting to tip the nozzle laterally toward the heavier tank at predetermined intervals.
7. In a liquid distributing device, the combination of a pipe provided with a nozzle movable with respect thereto to a laterally inclined position, and means for reversing the inclination of the nozzle including a tank on each side of said nozzle and connected thereto, each tank having a filling opening and a discharge opening, means for alternately conducting .water from said pipe through the filling'opening of the then elevated tank to tip the tanks, and valve means for controlling said filling and draining openings of said tanks.

In a liquid distributing device, the combination of a pipe provided with a laterally movable nozzle, and means for moving said nozzle comprising a tiltable frame connected to said nozzle and having tanks on opposite sides, each tank having a filling opening and a discharge opening, means for alternately admitting water to the tanks through the 1fillin' openings, valve means for controlling said'. ischarge openings, and means for operating said valve means on the tilting of said frame.
