This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to means for holding work-sheets on the collating tables used in the Underwood bookkeepingmachines.

These work-sheets are ordinarily held in position on the collating tables by means of a clamping device having arms which are arranged to grip the work-sheet. Owing tothe character of the work to be held and the manner of mounting said gripping arms,

it frequently happens, because of inaccu V gripping arms, one of which is yieldingly mounted, so that it can adjust itself relatively to the other arm, so that both come into positive contact with the work-sheets, with the result that said work-sheets are more effectively held between the gripping arms and the supporting table.

Another feature of the present invention is the provision of means on the collating table whereby a gripping surface is afford-ed. This is accomplished by mounting strips of rubber on the surface of the table at the points thereon where the gripping arms contact therewith, which insures a firm grip between the gripping arms and the table.

As is usual a platen 10 is mounted on a shaft 11 which is journaled in platen-frames 12 and 13. Secured to one end of shaft 11 is a hand-wheel 14 for rotating the platen. C o-operating with a rear or main table 15 are the usual front and rear rolls 16 and 17, respectively, to feed and guide work underneath and around the platen 10.

Fixedly mounted on the platen-frames 12 and 13, by means of screws 18 and 19, re- .spectively, and extending therebetween and above the platen 10, is a table-supporting bar 20. Mounted on said bar 20 is an auxiliary table for holding work-sheets, consisting of a left-hand section 21 and a righthand section 22. Said table- sections 21 and 22 may be adjusted laterally by means of the slots 23 and the screws 24 operating therein. The left edge of table-section 21 is upturned to form a flange or guide 25. The right edge of table-section 22 is also upturned to form .a flange or guide 26. These sections 21 and 22 are used in typewriting machines for bookkeeping purposes to support a work-sheet 27, the printed matter on which is duplicated on a record or proof sheet 28.

It is one purpose of the present invention to provide means for effectively holding the work-sheet 27 oh the auxiliary table-sections 21 .and 22. To accomplish this, there is fixed to the lower end of the flange or guide 26 a paper-clamp29, the body portion 30 of which is provided with upstanding ears 31 and 32. Journaled in these ears 31 and 32 is a shaft 33. ixedly mount-ed onsaid shaft 33, at one end thereof, adjacent ear 32, is a paper-gripping arm 34. This arm 34 is provided with a paper-gripping pad 35 at its pointof contact, and is further provided with a pin-36. The adjacent ear 32 also is provided with a pin 37. Fastenecl to said pins 36 and 37 is spiral spring 38 so positioned relatively to the pivotal point of said arm 34 that it will hold said arm 34 in either operative or inoperative position.

Fixed on the other end of shaft 33 is a lever39 which terminates in a finger-piece 40 for rocking said shaft 33. The shaft .33 at its end adjacent the lever 39 is provided with fiat portions 41 and 42 and round por-v tions 43 and 44, and terminates in a reduced cylindrical portion 45. This reduced portion 45 is provided with a bore 46 for a purpose which will appear. Mounted on said shaft 33 at its end where it is provided with said flat and round portions is another paper-gripping arm 47. Said arm 47 is provided with an opening having flat sides 48 and 49 and round sides 50 and 51, which opening is slightly larger than said shaft 33 at the point where said arm 47 is mounted thereon, :aswill be seen from Figure 7. By reason of this construction, :a slight movement between shaft 33 and grip ping arm 47 is permitted, which relative movement enables said arm 47 to adjust itself and more firmly grip the work-sheet 27 with its gripping pad 52. Said arm 47 also carries a pin 53. with one end fastened to said pin 53 and its other end fastened to guide 26, indicated at 55, holds said arm in either operative or inoperative position. WVhen said arm 47 is mounted in its proper position on said shaft 33, the reduced cylindrical portion 45 of said shaft passes freely through ear 31 of body portion 30, into the bore 46 of which is secured a screw 56.

For the purpose of making the clamping operation more effective, in accordance with the present invention, a gripping surface is provided on one of the table-sections Adjacent the right edge of the table-seetion 22 and at the points thereon where the gripping pads 35 and 52 com-e in contact with said table-section 22, lips 57 are formed on said table-section 22. Mounted on each of said lips 57 is a rubber strip 58. As will be apparent from Figure 2, when the grip ping arm-s 34 and 47 are in operative position, their pads 35 and 52, respectively, are in contact with said strips 58, holding the work-sheet 27 tightly therebetween.

In operation, the proof-sheet 28 is firml v held against the platen 10 by means of the paper-rolls 59, and the worksheet 27 positively held in position on the table- sections 21 and 22 by meansof thearms 34 and 47 co-operating with the rubber strips 58, which arms are snapped into effective and ineffective positions by means of the lever 39 and springs 38 and 54. The slight movement between the arm 47 and the shaft 33 permits the former to adjust itself in order to come into positive contact with the strip 58.

Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention and portions of the improvements may be used without other.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, arevoluble platen, a main table for supporting a work-sheet, an auxiliary table for supporting a second work-sheet, and a clamp for holding said second work-sheet on said auxiliary table, said clamp including a pair of gripping arms mounted on a shaft, one of said arms being fixedly mounted on said shaft, and the other of said arms being mounted to rock slightly relative to said shaft to permit said last-mentioned arm to adjust itself to effectively grip said secondwork-sheet.

2. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a main table for supporting a work-sheet, an auxiliary table for supporting a second worksheet, a clamp for holding said second sheet on said auXil-' iary table, said clamp comprising a body portion, a shaft journaled in said body por tion, and a pair of gripping arms mounted on said shaft, means to rock said arms into either efiective or ineffective position, means to hold said gripping arms in either efiective or ineffective position, means carried by said auxiliary table to provide a gripping surface -ther-eon, and means to permit adjustment of one of said gripping arms on the shaft to effectively grip the second work-sheet.

3. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a main table for supporting a workheet, an auxiliary tablefor supporting a second work-sheet, a clamp for holding said second sheet on said auxiliary table, said clamp including a body por tion, a shaft ournaled in said body portion, and a pair of gripping arms mounted on said shaft, means to rock said arms into either effective or ineffective position, said last mentioned means comp-rising a lever fixedly mounted on said shaft, said lever terminating in a finger-piece, means to hold said arms in either effective or inefiective position, means carried by said auxiliary table to provide a gripping surface thereon, and means to permit adjustment of one of said gripping arms on the shaft to effectively grip said second work-sheet.

4. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble plat-en, .a main table for supporting a work-sheet, an auxiliary table for supporting a second work-sheet, a clamp for holding said second work-sheet on said auxiliary table, said clamp comprising a body portion, a shaft journaled in said body portion, and a pair of gripping arms mounted in said shaft, means to rock said arms into either effective or ineffective position, means to hold said arms in either effective or ineffective position, said last-named means comprising a springmounted on each of said arms so positioned relatively to the pivotal point of said arms as to hold them in either effective or ineffective position, means carried by said auxiliary table to provide a gripping surface thereon, and means to aermit ad'ustment of one of said ri ping arms on the shaft to effectively grip said second work-sheet. P

5. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a main table for supporting a Worksheet, an auxiliary table for supporting a second work-sheet, a clamp for holding said second sheet on said auxiliary table, said clamp comprising a body portion, a shaft j ournaled in said body portion, and a pair of gripping arms mounted on said shaft, means to rock said arm into either effective or ineffective position, means to hold said gripping arms in either effective or ineffective position, means carried by said auxiliary table to provide a gripping surface thereon, said lastnamed means comprising strips of rubber mounted on said auxiliary table at the points thereon where the gripping arms come in contact therewith, and means to permit adjustment of one of said gripping arms on the shaft to effectively grip said second work-sheet.

6, In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a main table for supporting a work-sheet, an auxiliary table for supporting a second work-sheet, a clamp for holding said second work-sheet on said auxiliary table, said clamp comprising a body portion, a shaft journaled in said body portion, and a pair of gripping arms carried by said shaft, one of said arms being mounted fixedly on said shaft, and the other of said arms being mounted to rock slightly relatively to said shaft to permit adjustment thereon, means to rock said arms into either effective or ineffective position, means to hold said gripping arms in either effective or ineffective position, and means carried by said auxiliary table to provide a gripping suriace thereon.

7. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a main table for holding a Work-sheet, an auxiliary table for holding a second worksheet, a clamping device carried by said auxiliary table, said de vice including a pair of gripping arms, and rubber pads carried by said arms at their points of contact, lips formed on said auxiliary table at the points thereon where the gripping arms contact therewith, and rubber strips mounted on said lips to co-operate with said gripping arms to hold said second work-sheet between said arms and said strips.

8. In a typewriting machine, a revoluble platen, a main table for supporting a worksheet, an auxiliary table for supporting a second work-sheet, a clamp for holding said second work-sheet on said auxiliary table, said clamp including a body portion, a shaft journaled in said body portion, and a pair of gripping arms carried by said shaft, one of said arms mounted fixedly on said shaft, and the other arm mounted to rock relatively to said shaft to permit said last-mentioned arm to adjust itself to more effectively grip said second work-sheet, and a rubber pad carried by each of said arms at its point of contact, and means carried by said auxiliary table to provide a gripping surface thereon to cooperate with the clamp to firmly grip said second work-sheet.

9. In a typewriting machine, a revoluble platen, a main table for supporting a Worksheet, an auxiliary table for supporting a second work-sheet, a clamp for holding said second work-sheet on said auxiliary table, said clamp including a body portion, a shaft journaled in said body portion, and a pair of gripping arms carried by said shaft, one of said arms mounted fixedly on said shaft, and the other mounted to rock relatively to said shaft to permit said last-mentioned arm to adjust itself to more effectively grip said second work-sheet, and a rubber pad carried by each of said arms at its point of contact, and means carried by said auxiliary table to provide a gripping surface thereon to cooperate with the clamp to firmly grip said said second work-sheet,said means comprising rubber strips mountedvon said auxiliary table at the points thereon where the gripping arms come in contact therewith.

10. In a typewriting machine, a clamp for holding a worksheet thereon consisting of a body portion, ears formed on said body portion, a shaft journaled in said cars, a pair of gripping arms carried by said shaft, a lever fixedly mounted on said shaft to rock said arms into either effective or ineffective position, springs carried by each of said arms to hold the same in either effective or ineffective position, and means to permit one of said arms to adjust itself on the shaft to effectively grip the work-sheet.

11. In a typewriting machine, a clamp for holding a work-sheet thereon, consisting of a body portion, ears formed on said body portion, a shaft journaled in said cars, a pair of gripping arms carried by said shaft, one of said gripping arms mounted rigidly on said shaft, and the other of said arms mounted to rock slightly relatively to said shaft to adjust itself to firmly grip said worksheet, a lever fixedly mounted on said shaft to rock said arms into either eflective or ineffective position, and springs carried by each of said arms to hold the same in either effective or ineffective position.
