CHIMNEY COVER.

The invention relates to chimney covers. The object of the invention is to provide a cover tor the tops of chimneys so that at desired times the flue oi the chimney may rs be closed against the admission ot rains,

birds, and the like, so as to protect the walls ct -the building trom streaks caused by trickling water, and the stoppage of the flue by reason of the building of nests of birds, especially during the summer time, when the chimney may not be in use, etc.

Another object ot' the invention is to provide such a chimney cover that shall be easy to manipulate without a person being obliged to climb to the root oi' the building, that will to best advantage accomplish its purpose, be easily applied to the chimney, and easily removed therefrom when desired.

When in closed position the vent being small, the possibility of passage of water therethrough is reduced to a minimum. 13 indicates the hinge by means of which the top 12 is permanently secured to the trame 10. 14 is a bracket secured to the trame, as shown, 'for supporting the top against undue travel when the top is opened. 15 is a spring hasp riveted to the frame 10 and extending upwardly, and provided with a curved portion, formed in such shape that when the cover is closed the under side of the hasp will tit snugly against the upper portion of the top, as shown, the spring of the hasp permitting the cover to move when su'liicient torce is exerted.

16 indicates a lever pivoted at 16a to the forward end oil' an end iiange of the cover, and provided intermediate its ends with the slot 1Gb, the slot being placed to surround a projecting pin 16d positioned on a rear portion ot the side ot the trame 10. 1t is manitest that when the lever is rotated about its pivot the slotted portion will travel longitudinally with respect to the pivot 16d. For the purpose ci" opening and shutting the cover, I have provided in the free end of the lever, a ring 17, towhich are secured the upper ends of suitable cords 17a and 17", that are made long enough to reach to the ground outside or' the building, or other places where the free ends may be within easy reach or adjustment ot' the cover, proper hooks or other fastening means being provided (not shown) for attachment of the ends ot the cords. These cords so called may be made oi' wire or other suitable material, for operating the lever.

lVhen the cover is in open position, as shown in Fig. 3 a violent wind might tend to sway the cover more or less, and to mitigate this possibility l have provided on the 'forward tace ot the cover a fastening 18, to which is secured a cord or suitable flexible device, that when the cover is open, as shown in Fig 3, may be tied or fastened to a'suitable retainer to securely hold the cover in opened position. Thiscord 19 is an additional safeguard tothe holding power of the proper ccrd. p

Itis to be noted that when the cover is closed the free end of the lever passes beyond the edge of the cover to a considerable distance, so that` when the cord is pulled downward1y,tlie lever, being tulcruinecl on the pin 16d will by reason of the attachment of the lever at 16, cause the coverto open, and pass beyond the center of gravity so that 1t will tend to automatically pass to final position 'to rest on the bracket 1d; but, also, that when opened about half way, or standing somewhat near the vertical, the cord 19 will then be in position, when pulled, to move the cover to final position shown in Fig. When, the cover is in its opened po; and the cords are unfastened, the cords r. and 171 will then be on the opposite side o' the pivot or fulcrumcd 16d, shown in 3, in which case a downward pull on the cords will again turn the cover the hinge 'l hut in a reverse direction, to close the cover lVhen, in moving in either direction, the cov r reacl es a neutral position, so to speelt, or on a dead center relation on the the cord may be moved far enouL i out of the perpendicular to a side pull on the cover to draw it to opened or closed position, or so closely to final position that gravity will inevitably move it the remainder of its necessary travel.

The legs 11 are made of suiliciently thin material that may be bent around projecting ornamental designs of the chimney, should such projections be high enough up to come within the length of the legs, and the fastener 11b tightened to hold the legs below the projections of the chimney.

Having now described my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a chimney cover, the combination of a top portion having a convex form in one direction, with flanged sides secured thereto corresponding to the shape of the top portion and with straight lower edges, a band formed at its upper edge to coincide with the lower edge of the iiange of the top portion and adapted to surround the sides of the top of a chimney, legs projecting downwardly from the band for vertically supporting the band adjacent the top of theI chimney, means for securing the lower ends of the legs tixedly to the sides of the chimney, a hinged connection between the lower edge of the3 top-tlange and the upper edge. of the band, and means for opening and closing the cover from a position removed from the top of the chimney.

2. In a chimney cover, the combination of a band adapted to surround the sides of the top of a chimney, downwardly projecting legs for supporting the band, means for securing the legs to a lower portion of the chimney, a concave-convex top member hinged to the band with its concave side downward, a lever pivoted to the top me1nber adjacent a portion opposed to the hinge connection, and having a fulcrumed support on the band for opening and closing the cover, and means secured to the free end of the lever for operating the lever tcsh-ift the cover from itsl closed and from its opened position.

3. In a chimnev cover, the combination of a concave-convex cover member having a drainage vent therethrough, a band adapted to surround the sides of the top portion of a chimney, means for supporting the band on the sides of the chimney below the band, a hinged connection between the band and the cover member, and means for operating the cover member to closed and opened position.

In a chimney cover, the combination of a cover portion having an arc shaped top with side flanges therefor, a band adapted to be placed abreast of the side portions of the top of a chimney, supporting legs depending from the band adapted to be secured to the chimney below the band, a hinged connection between the flanged portion of the cover top and the band and a locking connection between the cover portion and the band.

5. In a chimney cover, the combination of a cover portion having a convex top and side flanges therefor, a band adapted to be placed to surround the sides of the top portion of a chimney, a hinged connection between one of the flanges and the band, a lever pivoted to the cover portion and having' a longitudinally yielding support on the band, and means for operating the lever to shift the top portion to open and to closed positions thereof.

6. In a chimney cover, the combination of a cover portion, a band adapted to be secured abreast the side portion of the top of Va chimney, a lever secured to the band and to the cover portion for shifting the cover portion to opened and to closed positions, an operating mechanism for opening and closing` the cover depending` from the lever to a position removed from the chimw ney and capable of being secured toward Athe extremity thereof when the cover is shifted, and other means secured to the cover portion for holding the cover portion in shifted position.

7. In a chimney cover, the combination of a cover portion having a'concave under face when in closed position, and means for shifting the cover portion, the cover portion having a comparatively small water drainage aperture therein.

8. In a chimney cover, the combination of a support, adapted to be held adjacent the sides of the top of a chimney, a cover member hinged to the support, and a bracket secured to the support adapted to sustain the cover portion in its opened position.

9. In a chimney cover, the combination of a support adapted to be held adjacent the sides of the top portion of a chimney, a cover portion hinged to the support, means shifting the @over peni-se t0'V Grease llU and to closed position, a bracket on the support adapted to sustain the cover portion in its opened position, and a locking connection between the cover portion and the support adapted to secure the cover portion in its closed position.

10. In e chimney cover, the combination of a support adapted to be held adjacent the sides of the top of e chimney, a cover member hinged to the support, and e bracket adapted to sustain the cover portion in its opened position, said bracket being intermediate the cover portion and the support- When the cover is open.

In s chimney cover, the combination of a cover portion, a support adapted to be held in juxtaposition to the upper portion of a chimney, means for supporting,` the first named support in its upper position comprising flexible legs depending from the lirst named Support, and means for securing the lower portions of such legs to the sides of the chimney.

In a chimney cover, the combination of acover portion, a supporting,` element adapted to be sustained at the upper portion of a chimney, means for holding .the clement in its upper position comprising legs depending from the element and provided with hooked lower ends, and means for engaging the hooked ends to secure the legs to the chimney.

13. In a chimney cover, the combination of a cover portion, a support for the cover portion, means for holding the support in position toward the top of a chimney comprising` legs pivoted at their upper ends to the support Jfor vertical swing, and means at the lower ends of such legs Jfor holding the legs to the sides of the chimney.
