VAPOR BURNER.

The invention relates to vapor burners, and particularly to devices of this character which generate the vapors to be ignited through the medium of the heat created by the burning` of the gases generated.
The invention has amongl its various objects the combination of certain elements which, when associated with each other, provide a compact'and portable structure or stove suitable for homes, for travelers, or for use by campers, or others, in preparing food or heating other commodities.
rThe invent-ion has among other objects the provision of an arrangement whereby the flames produced `by the combustion of the gases crea-ted will be caused to spread as they emanate from the burner and thus act upon substantially the entire under surface of the vessel in which the commodity to be cooked or heated is confined.v
It is another object of the invention to arrange a means adjacent the burner which will augment the distribution of the llames and thereby increase the heating capacity of the device.
lt is a feature of the invention to construct the heater so that it may be readily assembled and disassembled when this is found necessary or desirable.
It is another object of the invention to provide a structure such as that referred to above with a means in which a small quantity of some volatile liquid, such as alcohol, may be placed, which, when ignited, causes the initial vaporization of a similar-liquid confined in a reservoir. The heat created by the burning of the gases generated in the reservoir heats the container forming the reservoir and causes a continuation of the vaporization of the liquid contained therein.
lt is a feature of the invention to provide a. support for the various elements of the structure and to provide vents through which air may pass and cause the proper combustion and distribution of the flames caused by the burning of the gases.
It is another object to provide a structure which will reduce any vortex or similar ac tion such as will cause the flames emanating from the burner to be attracted toward the center of the burner.
The invention will be explained in detail and more readily understood when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate various embodiments of which the invention 1s susceptible, it bethereof.

The structure whereby the various features and advantages of the invention are accomplished includes a base 10 which is of a flared, annular outline having a plurality of apertures 11, 11 provided throughout its circumference adjacent the lower end Air for combustion purposes and for cooling the table or support and the lower portion of the base 10 is supplied through the apertures. A pan-shaped vessel 12 is fitted into the upper end 13 of the base The bottom of the vessel 12 is provided with a centrally arranged depression 14 which is provided to receive the cup-shaped container 15, and is further formed to provide an annular depression 16 which is separated from the depression 14 by the annular ridge 17, The depression 16 is employed for the purpose of providing a reservoirfor a smallquantity of some volatile liquid, such as alcohol, which when ignited, causes the initial vaporization of the liquid 18 conlined in the container 15. The vessel 12 is provided with a plurality of apertures 19, 19 arranged at suitable intervals throughout the circumference thereof, adjacent the annular depression 16 which are provided to allow air to circulate therethrough from the interior vof the base 1() into the interior of the vessel '12 and cause the flames resulting from the burning liquid confined in the recess 16 to be directed vtoward the container until this liquid is consumed. These apertures will, in addition, after the liquid in the recess 16 is consumed, cooperate and act tocause the flames emanating from the cup-shaped container cap or burner to be spread outwardly relatively to said burner. The vesvl l) sel l2 is provided with an annular bead 2l which maintains the vessel in proper position relatively to the base l0.
The container l5, as before stated, is provided with the cap or burner which ts the container l5 sufficiently tight to prevent the escape at the juncture ot the cap and body portion of the container of any of the gases generated in said container. The burner is further provided with an annular recessed portion 2'2 which causes a portion of the air entering the apertures 19 of the vessel l2 to be deflected outwardly relatively to the burner and container which causes the flames emanating from the burner Q0 `to spread outwardly therefrom. The upper wall 23 of the burner is convexed and is provided with a plurality of annularly arranged apertures 9.4 and 25, the innermost series or row ot apertures being less in number than the outer.
The vessel 1Q is further provided with a plu ality oi apertures 26 which are arranged. adjacent its uppermost edge, and act to cause the llames emanating from the. small quantity of liquid in the depression 16 and the burner 2O to be inclined inwardly.
A spider generally designated 2i', adapted to be removably mounted upon the upper end of the vessel l2, is also employed and is supported by means of the supports 2S which are disposed at intervals below said spider and are designed to maintain the spider in spaced relation to the structure arranged below it. The spider 2T is composed of a plurality of radially arranged ribs 29 which are connected together by means ot the annular connectors 30 and Si. rl.`he spider 2T has a wire mesh i2 secured to it which is disposed below the ribs 29 so thatsaid wire mesh will be arranged above the burner Q0. The wire mesh is provided with a number ot downwardly project-ing aprons 33. 33, as shown, which are interposed between the burner 20. container 15. and the vessel l2. This mesh with its aprons 33 acts to break up and distribute the flames emanating from the burner. becomes heater and thereby increases the heating capacity of the device. The wire mesh is constructed and located in such a manner with respect to the burner and its flames that the heating is enhanced rather than retarded.
By arranging the apertures 2t and 25 in the manner shown and described, that is, toward the periphery of the cap or burner, and leaving the center ot the burner blank or devoid of any apertures the vortex action usually occurringT at this portion o't the burner is substantially reduced. The vortex action usually causes the flames emanating trom the burner to be drawn toward the center thereof and prevents the spreading ot the flame.
The structure illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 discloses another means whereby this vortesv action ma;v be reduced. The means` therein disclosed employs a cup shaped container having a cap or burner 3l which has, a concave depression 3.5 which will act upon the heated air at the center ot the burner and canse it to be directed outwardly relatively to the burner and cause the llame:y due to the ignition of the gases escaping: through the annular rows ot' apertures tiff. 3T and 3S to be directed toward the outer periphery ot' thel burner. ln view otI the fact that the burner bl is provided with the annular curved or recessed portion 3i) the air striking this surface will also be de flected toward the outer edge o l' the burner` thus further insuring the spreading ot the flames emanating from thc burner.
From the foregoing description of' tir.` structure it. is manifest that an arraligcment is provided whereby the initial generation ol a volatile gas may bc readily accomplished. lt is further evident that the generation of the gas will automatically take place after the gas created is ignitei'l and. further. that the possibility otl any vortex action taking place at the center ot the burner will be substantially reduced. causing the llames to be spread outwardly trom the burner,v all ot which cooperate to augment the eliicieucy ot the structure.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is the vfollowing:
l. ln a. device ol the character described. the combination ol a generator having a burner, a vessel on the bottom wall oi' which said generator is adapted to be arranged. said vessel having a recess for the purpose ot' containing liquid which, when ignited,causes the initial operation ol the generator, said vessel having apertures surrounding said generator and above the bottom wall of said generator for directing the flames created by the ignition of said liquid in said recessl to be directed toward said generator.

In a device' of the character described the combination of a container providing a generator, said container having a burner, the side wall of the container being formed to provide an annular curved portion located adjacent the top of the container for causing the flames emanating from said burner to be directed toward the periphery of the burner, the top of said burner having a central imperforate portion, and having rows of concentrically arranged perforations disposed adjacent the periphery of the top of the burner, the number of said perforations in the outer row being greater than those of the inner rows.

In a device of the character described the combination of acontainer providing a generator, said container having a burner, the side wall of the container being formed to provide an annular curved portion located adjacent the top of the container, said annular curved portion being flared outwardly beyond the side wall of said container for causing the flames emanating from said burner to be directed toward the periphery of the burner, a central imperforate portion on the top of the burner, a semi-spherical imperforate depression arranged concent-rically with relation to the periphery of the top of the burner and within said central imperforate portion, and having rows of concentrically arranged perforations disposed adjacent the periphery of the top of the burner, the number of said perforations in eachv row progressively increasing toward the periphery of the top of the burner.
7.' In a device of the character described the combination of a cup-shaped vessel, across the open end of which a grate is adapted to be arranged, a container in ducing an annular space between it and the vessel which surrounds the container, the
side wall of the' vessel being provided with apertures which are disposed around the circumference thereof, above the bottom of the container in which the liquid is confined.

In a device of the character described the combination of a cup-shaped vessel, across the open end of which a grate is adapted tobe arranged, the bottom of said vessel being provided with a centrally disposed recess surrounded by an upwardly projecting annular rib which cooperates to produce a recess which surrounds said centrally disposed recess, apertures provided in the side wall of the cup-shaped vessel, said apertures being disposed around the circumference of the vessel adjacent the bottom thereof above said second-mentioned depression, a container having a perforated top, said container being adapted 'to be arranged in the centrally arranged recess and providing a wall of an annular space which surrounds the container.

In a device of the character described the combination of a cup-shaped vessel, across the open end of which a gra-te is adapted to be arranged, the botto-m of said vessel being provided with a centrally disposed recess surrounded by an upwardly projecting annular rib which cooperates to produce a. recess which surrounds said centrally disposed recess, apertures provided in the side wall of the cup-shaped vessel, said apertures being disposed around the circuinferenee of the vessel adjacent the bottoni thereof above said second-mentioned depression, a container having)r a perforated top.v said container beingV adapted to be arranged in the cent1-all)v ar anged recess and providing a \vall ol an annular space which surounds the container, and an apron extendingfrom the grate into the vessel.
