This invention relates to ladder feet and has for its primary object to provide a 'device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the legs oi' the ladder may be lengtl'iened in order to compensate for uneven surfaces upon which the ladder is desired to be placed, and whereby the ladder will be positively and effectively held in an upright position and prevented from sliding or falling when placed upon the most uneven surfaces.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ladder foot construction that is adapted for association with practically all forms of ladders and that when so applied will not be likely to become detached. therefrom.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood the same comprising the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts `hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing, and claimed.

Now having particular reference to the drawing, the ladder more clearly disclosed in Figure 1 comprises a pair of spaced legs 5-5 that are interconnected by the usual spaced rungs 6. In carrying out my present invention I connect to the outer lower side of each leg 5 a foot that is constructed in accordance with this invention and a descrip- The foot constitutes the provision of a relatively elongated strip of material preferably pressed steel or other serviceable material 7 that is of a width equivalent to the width of the ladder legs and that is formed throughout its length with screw holes in order that the same may be secured to the ladder legs through the medium of screws or `the like 8. The longitudinal edges of the strip 7 are so bent as to provide vchannels 9--9 within which are guided the opposite edges ot an extension plate 10, the lower end of whichr is bent outwardly at Lright angles tor providing a supporting foot.
Extending throughout substantially the entire length ot' the plate 7 are spaced openings 11 arranged centrally of the plate for receivingv the inner end of a spring controlled pin `12 that is slidably arranged at its inner end through a bossed opening 18 in the extension plate 10 adjacent the upper end thereof. y This pin 12 is yof T-shape as shown in Figure 3, and the opposite ends 'of the outer arm thereof areconnected to certain ends of rctractile coil springs 14e-111 that are mounted wit-hin protecting sleeves 15-15, the inner ends of which are threaded within openings in the extension plate 10 at .opposite sides of the openingl in said extension plate, while the inner end of said springs are anchored to cross pins 16-16 in the sleeves, as clearly shown in Figure 3.
It will thus be understood that by pulling' outwardly uponr the pin 12,- the inner end of the same will be disengaged from the openings 11 in the plate 7 thus permitting the sliding of the extension plate 10 within the channels of said attached plate and after the desired extension of the foot has been secured, the pin kupon release will engage within the proper opening 11. y
For bracing the extensionplate 10 of the particular foot being used, thereis provided aftwo part clamp 16 that is adapted to be secured to the lower rung ofthe ladder at the end opposite the extended foot as clearly shown in Figure 1. Onemember of said clamp is provided with a lateral ear 17 that is formed with an opening through which is arranged an angularly bent and threaded end oit' a brace rod 18 whichend is secured within the `opening .of the ear through reason of lock nuts 19. y This brace rod extends downwardly and outwardly beneath the side bar of the ladder to which is attac-hed the extended foot and at said lower edge is also bent laterally outwardly for engagement through one of the openings in the extension plate to be there secured by lock nuts 20.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple, fand efiicient form ot extension foot for ladders that is welladapted lor all the purposes heretofore designated, and even though l have herein shown and described the most practical embodiment` ot the invention With which am at this time familiar, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor elianges may be made therein Without. aiecting; the spirit and scope ol the appended claims.
