WILLIAM S. MOCLINTIC, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO JONES &
LAUGIAHLIN STEEL CORPORATION, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, -A CORPORA- TIOIjll OF PENNSYLVANIA FABRICATED STRUCTURAL MEMBER.
Application led'June 27, 1922. Serial No. 571,157.)
My invention aims to strengthen and improve rollti structural members of open web or trussed form, and to enable such members to be readily and cheaply fabricated and utilized for building and other purposes. V v i In the accompanying drawings, wherein I haveshown'one embodiment of my in-V vention for purposes of illustration, Fig. 1 l0 is a side view of a trussed web I-beam such as is suitable for floor beams, roof trusses, bridge girders, and other, structural purposes; Fig. 2-,is an enlarged side view of one. end ofthe beam shown in Fig. 1; Fig.- 15 3 is a cross-section of the same on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; andFig. 4 isa top view of one en'd portion of the same beam; Figs. '2,' 3 and 4 eing drawn to the same scale;
and F.ig.' 5 is a .perspective view of vasecuring clip. y
The invention may be applied to I-beams,
channels, Z.sections, Tfsect-ions, H-sections,
and other shapes withand without flanges, havin trussed'- or 'open Webs formed in $5. tegra y withthe flanges or'continuous -marns. In the particular embodiment selectedor illustration 'herein and shown in thed'rawings, referringparticularly to Fig. 1,
L the invention is'embodied in a trussed I-' Il) beam 11 having flanges 12 connected by angularly disposed lattice or web members 13 formed integrally with the flanges by any [suitable 'process of manufacture. *Pref-- l erabl each end of.. the beam is strength- I5 cned y securing to the flanges suitable shear plates 14,A disposed one. on each side of the web, although it is not'essential that shear plates -be secured on both sidesA of the web.
.These sliea'aruplates` haveA flan es 15 which (0 fit against land are secured to t e inner sides b The' preferred manner of securing the flanges 15and the flanges 12 "toeach ot erisbya series of clips 16 having studs 1T tting through alining notches d5 18 inthe contacting flanges, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. and drawing the'members snug together. 'lhe clipsare preferablyfabricated with the studs 1'7 straight, asshown in full lines in Fig. 5, and are bent under the flanges by a hammer or otherv suitable'means readily available at the place of use.
. Theshear plates are preferably made of a lengthaboutequal to the depth of the l web, and the connecftlonsto the flanges -of the element, are spacedV to hold the shear plates and flanges 'securely against forces tending to distort the end portion of the fabricated structure in any and every direction. A
- Fabricated structural members embodying my invention may advantageously be substituted for solid web members Wherever lightness and strength are desirable'. buildings and other structures the open Webs permit pipes, wires, conduits and other accessories and structural parts to be run through the beams where they are out of the way of other members-and within the minimum clearance limits. The shear plates not only strengthen the ends of the vbeam or o t-her element to enable it to carry its maximum load with safety, but enable con- "nections with other portions of the structure as strong as. with solid webto be made beams.
If desirable, shear plates may be applied to beams and other elements between their ends, and are advantageously used wherever there is a point of support or connection with some other portion ofthe structure in which the'element is embodied.
In fabricating structural vmembers embodying my invention, itis customaryto roll the integral elements in continuous lengths suliicient for several members, and
cut them in lengths to suit the particular .sire` 'to secure by-Letters 'Patent is as follows:
1. A structural element comprising continuous side marginal anges connectedv by' web members integral therewith together constituting]- wi'th 'supp ementary shear mem ers at spaced points, said shear members belng formed with end flanges and fitted between the anges on each side of said elementand rigidly secured vthereto by means of chps embracing and gripping said `contiguous 'flanges at each margin Aof said structural elements.
a jointless truss,.and rovided 2. A structural elementA comprising coni tinuous side margins connected by web members integral therewith together constituting a jointless truss, and provided with supplementary shear members at spaced points, said shear members being bent along their sides to form flanges and rigidly secured thereby to the said side margins by means of clips embracing said margins and flanges.
3. A structural element having parallel sides connected by an open web integral therewith, said sides and web together con-Y stituting a jointless truss, and shear plates having edge holding means arranged in pairs on opposite sides of said web at spaced points to cover openings therein, and rigidly secured to said sides by means of clips eming provided with registering notches to receive and position said clips.
5. A -flanged rolled structural member having an open web of truss-like frm connecting its flanges and alining notches in opposite flanges adapted to receive clips for securing stili'enin members thereto, stifteners having space notches corresponding to the notches in-said flanges, and clips positioned in said notches for securing said stifeners to said structural members.
6. In combination with a rolled flanged member having an open web and stiffeners adapted to fit between the flanges on opposite sides of said web, said flanges and Vstiffeners having alining notches in their adjacent edges, and clips embracing said notched edges and having studs projecting through said notches and bent under them.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM S. MCCLINTIC.
