`My invent-ion relates to .reels or Aspools adapted for use 'with wire, lyarn and looin, and to :a simpl-ined .finethod'oi fconstruction, adjustment Aanduse, whereby wire, loorn or vany material in coils 'may fbearranged on such--reelsin aneasy and convenient manner.
In "the occupation of wiring for electric current, Ythe materials :such -.as wire, yar-n, or leoni, are `furnished .to the opera-tor, in coils, which are unwieldy, andrlikel'v yto-b'ecome tangled while .in -.use. It is .-alwaysla great annoyanceand causes loss offftinie to manipulate .-aloose coil of wire for .fibrous material,`while at thesainetiine stringing circuit wires, wrapping there with insulation, -and-the like. y lay-s .the-coilfdown, and withdraws fthe niaterial -as he Ineedsit, f and particularly in .an overhead Awiring,-jolo, the wire comesI off from the coil ingreater quantities than :is .needed -and `for-ins finto .spirals YAand kink which make athe handling thereof dii'iicult.V `Such kinkingand tanglingeanbe avoided by the use ofrngy novel reel, i and ,to this end, .Ihave provided-thesanie. ltvislniy-.obisect to provide a y.reel tof simple construction, preterably havin-g .a .sirnp-l'e .forni of Ihandleor hanger, Fand lbeing -ydeniountable l-and .adj ustable dior various sizes of .coils,-s'o that-coils of wire, yarn or loom, --or A4the, like-can be .set onto .the .adjusted core, andthe score set into the ireel. By ,preference .the .handle .or ehang erc-analsobe used as a stand.
Y The yabove objects and fother advantages to .be noted, l accomplish by rthat certain construction and varrangementeoj:parts to be hereinafter more speoiticallypointed out and claimed. y Y
iIn'the drawings: Y .Figure il is .a sideeelevation rof 'the device, showing thereore insection. p, iFigureLQ is a fsection-'on theline .2-'2 of Figure 1. A v Figure 3 ifs a plan view fof .the-core. :Figure lisa side-elevation ofthe core. The reel is `'formed iin .fthe illustrated einbod-iment, which rit will `-beunderstood is merely -Dne fof ithe'sxpossible devices, 'which `contain rthe vfeatures of :nay ainvention, with a spindle l, which has two thumb screws .2, 2, for itsen'ds The heads r3,-jo the thumb screws are sufficiently spaced from the ends oit' the spindle when the screws are turned clear down, to provide la journal for the stand. This stand is shown in the illustrated device as having triangular shaped side The operator 'usually pieces hhaving mounting, portions 5, which Y lit overthe screws 2, and said two triangular sections connected together by portions "6. The stand is thus a rigid unit, which is deinountablefroin the reel, onl which the reel can stand.
rTheside .plates of the reel `are ornied'of dished stainpings oisuitable dianieter, which are set over the spindle with their convex' faces toward .each other, thereby `providing eign unirse stares eterna/r a ,proper confinenient'of acoil set overthe core, and between the two faces, when theV` two said yfaces are liorced toward each other..
The one plate T has secured liXed'ly'there-v to.a. sleeve 8, which fits overthe spindle.
rheotherplate 9'is set onto the sleeve and heldin .place by a wing-nut 'l0.- The sleeve,` as will be inoted, is threaded to receive this nut.
The Vcore oi the reel is Vformed of -a strip` of flexible .niaterial 1l, .preferably of metal, which has a .tongue 12, struck down and turned .more vor -lessparallel with the Astrip at one end, and a series o'fslots 13 `at the other end, in which the .tongue isselectively placed, .dependent upon the :internal diangieter oi rthe-.coil thatis to be .mounted on vthe reel. By inserting .the Atongue Vwithin the selected slot, .thereby bending Vthe strip .into a cylinder, Vand locating .the cylinder 'hetween .the `two disks, the reel is complete, with the convexity'ofrthe .disks tending to hold the core in arposition cofaXia'l withLt-he spindleV and sleeve.
As so constructed, acoil of wire, lforexaniple, is'fto be mounted on the reel. The plate 9, andfits wing nut, .and .thestandor handle are re1nov.ed,fand thejcore stripvis set into .the coil of wire, Vwith kthe tongue thereolflinthe slot 13 which willzresultinfthe best Vfit of the ooilgtoathe core. The ycore and coil are then Vplaced over :the spindle and sleeve, andv centered on the plate 't'. The plate 9 .is then set in pl'aeeyand the wing nut .is turneddown until the plate YSand plate .'.7 A'trietionally .grasp the v`core fand the coil I of wire between them. The handle or stand .is then set in Vp'laceon'the ends ofithe spindle, andthe reel'isfready zfor use.
fltunay be set onfthe floor, or -hung from a fnailfand the reel wiil be .ifreeitoturn without hindrance ot the handle member. The wire will be free to unwind as used, and there will be no danger of the coil getting out of hand.
The whole structure is very quickly demountable, as is evident from the above description, is adapted to be built up around a coil of given material, so as to retain it snugly and evenly.
The dished nature of the side plates gives them great strength and as shown they may be beaded around the edges to add to this feature of strength.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure l. Letters Patents, is
