REDUCTION GEARING.
Application filed March 5, 1923'. Serial No. 622,958.
The invention relates to reduction gearing and has among its. objects the provision of a reduction gearing embodying a worm. drive; a reduction gearing having provision for transmitting power at opposite sides thereof; a. reduction gearing having a housing provided with a cover through which the. drive shaft extends and which is removable without disturbing the mechanism with-in the housing; and a reduction gearing in which the power shaft supports the drive shaft Other objects of the invention reside in the: novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts asmore fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a reduction gearing embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan View thereof with the housing cover removed;
Figure 3 is: a cross section on the line 33 of Figure 2;:
Figure at is: a cross section on the line l--i of Figure 3.
1 and 2: are respectively the lower section and upper section or cover of the housing and 3 and i are respectively the power shaft and the counter of the reduction gearing,
shaft extending transversely of the housing and parallel to each other, the axes of these shafts being in the meeting edges of" the lower section and cover of the housing and the power shaft extending laterally beyond the opposite sides of the housing so that either or both sides of this power shaft may be used in transmitting; power; These two shafts are journalled in the bearing members 5 and 6 supported upon the lower section 1 of the housing and therewithin at its opposite sides, these bearing members, having detachable cups The gearing mechanism comprises the worm: 7 the worm wheel 8"- meshing with the worm and secured to the sleeve 9- by suitable: means such as the key 16). This sleeve is rotataloly mounted upon the power shaft 3 adjacent". to the bearing member 5' and has secured to its inner end the pinion 11; which as shown, is integral therewith.
This pinion meshes with the gear 12- secured upon the counter shaft 4 to which is also of the motor 18, this motor being mounted upon thebracket l9 detaehably' secured to the rear end of the lower section 1 of. the reduction gearing housing.
The worm shaft is: mounted upon the power shaft and its support comp-rises: the spaced side frames 21 on opposite sides of the worm wheel 8 and having hubs 22 journalled upon the pinion sleevev 9. The rear lower ends of these side frames have lateral lugs 23- formed thereon which rest upon and are secured to lateral lugs 24' formed upon the rear end of the lower section 1 of thehousing, the securing means comprising bolts 25 extending through these lugs. By securing the rear end of the support to the rear wall of: the lower section: the support is held from rotation about the pinion sleeve. The support has at the upper edges of the sideframes 21 and at the opposite ends thereof the annularenlarge ments 26 and 27 carrying the anti-friction bearings 28 and 29 respectively which support the worm shaft 15' near its opposite ends; The opening through the rear annular enlargement 27 is of sufficientdiameter to: permit of the passage longitudinally thereth-rough of the worm 7.
30- is a detachable closure in the rear end of the housing cover 2 surrounding the worm shaft 15- and having spaced inner and outer walls 31 and respectively forming a chamber for receiving any luhricant thrown off the annular bevelled shoulder 33' of the worm shaft. This chamber communicates with the interior of the housing through suitable passages 34- in the lower part of the inner wall 3'1. The opening in the end wall".
of the cover 2 which is closed by the closure is of suiiicient diameter to permit upon the removal of the flexible coupling 16 and of the closure 30, of tilting the forward end of the cover 2 upwardly and at the same time moving the same rearwardly until the rear end of the cover has passed over the outer end of the worm shaft 15 at which time the cover is free to be raised from the lower section of the housing.
From the above description it will be readily seen that I have provided a reduction gearing having a housing provided with a cover through which the drive shaft extends, this cover being removable without disturbing the mechanism within the housing. I urthermore, that I have provided a simple construction for supporting the worm upon the power shaft. Furthermore, that the power shaft is adapted to transmit power at either or both ends of the reduction gearing, this being very desirable in certain instances as for example when the reduction gearing is used in conjunction with a pair of parallel conveyors.
