Description

June 22 1926. 1,589,771
J. C. TUCKER.
COVER FOR CONTAINERS AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 2, 1925 INVENTOR. JOHN.C.TucKER Patented June 22, 1926. l
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COVER FOR CONTAINERS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed December 2, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in covers for containers and the like and the object of the invention is to provide a cover for containers generally, adaped to eifectively prevent spilling of the contents of the container when the cover is in closed position and designed when in open position to remain operatively attached to the container.
Further objects are the provision of a simply constructed and efficient device of this character which can be manufactured and commercially marketed at low cost.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists essentially of a spring-actuated cover adapted to be anchored in any suitable manner within the container in closed position, and in open position to be attached to the container in an offset position.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure:
Figure 1 is a section through a container showing the cover in closed position;
Figure 2 is an enlarged section of a container showing the cover in open position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates the container, B the opening therein and O my improved cover made of any suitable material. This cover is provided with the well-known ring member 10 for lifting purposes, said member being pivotally connected to an eyebolt 12 extending through the cover and provided at its inner end with a smaller ring 13. To this ring is attached in any suitable manner, here shown as a slip catch at 1 1, a hook 15 suitably and partially bent twice on itself as at 16 and 17 to engage as illustrated in Figure 2 when the cover is in open position with the neck 18 of the container open ing B. The other end of this hook member is formed with an eye 19 to which is attached one end of a spring of resilient material 20, the other end being anchored to a ring or the like 21 rigidly secured in the bottom 22 of the container. In the example of my cover here illustrated, it is shown with flanged sides 23 adapted to engage with the neck 18 of the container opening.
Serial No. 72,757.
The operation of my device will from the foregoing and the drawings be apparent. In closed position as indicated in Figure 1, the resilient member 20 through the hook 15 anchors the cover securely so that it cannot be readily removed and prevents any of the contents of the container being spilled. The
hook 15 being suitably bent to engage with the side of the container opening, enables the cover to be held in an ofiset position when removed and while the container is being filled direct. It should be noted that the ring 21 will be made sufficiently large to enable the cover attachment to be renewed without difliculty.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely dilferent embodiments of my inven tion, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all. matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a device of the character described, a container cover, a hook member adapted at one end to be attached to said cover and intermediately bent to engage with the container to support the cover in an offset open position, a spring member connected at one end to the hook member and anchored at the other end within the container.
2. A container cover, an eyebolt through. said cover, a handle ring on one end of the eyebolt and a ring in the other end of said bolt, a rod member hooked at one end to detachably engage with the second ring member, and intermediately and suitably bent to support the cover in open position, and a spring anchored. in the container and connected to said hook member.
3. The combination with a container cover of spring-retaining means anchored within the container and an S-shaped supporting member connecting the cover with the retaining member.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOI-IN CLIFFORD TUCKER.
