UNITED STATES WALTER REMPT, OF SUHL, GERMANY.
SPORTING SHOTGUN.
Application filed December 24, 1925, Serial No. 77,559, and in Germany December 31, 1924.
According to this invention a shotgun of the magazine type is so constructed as regards its coacting parts that the source of danger in handling it is reduced, the manipulation itself is simplified and the coacting parts are ably so as completely to close the chamber,
only a small space being left between the side wall and the cover as a guide which at y the same time acts as a guide for a chamber boss. A portion of this narrow space or slot, the rear portion, may be covered by a plate which acts as a closing plate and the front end of which acts as a stop for the bolt handle when the chamber is open, the handle being forinstance provided with a notch or v the like with which it engages over the plate.
For further securing the locking a second locking boss is provided on the bolt, which, on the lock moving backwards, releases securing means for the cartridge magazine, the said release taking place when the head of the lock is pulled back so far into the chamber that the cartridge lying in the magazine, which is forced up by the cartridge elevator, can enter the chamber unobstructed. The securing means may consist for instance of a one-armed or two-armed lever, one arm of which or a projection on the said arm en.- gages the cartridge magazine in such a manner that, when the parts are in the secured position, the top cartridge is forced out of the cartridge magazine against the under surface of the projection or lever arm. On the bolt going back the second locking boss presses against a pin or stop member on the locking lever and causes the latter to move aside insuch a manner that the outlet opening of the magazine is no longer obstructed, so that the elevator can push the top cartridge into the chamber, after the spent cartridge has been thrown out by the ejector.
According to a further constructional form of the invention the nut of the breeclr bolt is so connected to the striker and so guided inthe bolt that,'on the breech-bolt bein pushed forward, it is held by the upwardly pressed spring loaded trigger and the breech-bolt with the breech-bolt head is alone pushed into the lockin position, while the nut of the breech-bolt with the striker is held until the trigger is pulled, whereupon the nut of the bre ch-bolt and. the striker shoot forward and are brought to rest'in' a known manner by the striker spring; By the holding back of the breech-bolt nut with the striker the gun is at the same time cocked, i
As a means for further securing and pos itively guiding the head of the breeclrbolt the cartridge extractor of the latter is so arranged as to be guided in a groove in the forward part of the breech casing l and enters this groove, when the breech-bolt is turned by means of the handle and the head of the b'reechbolt also seeks to turn with it. Such an undesired lateral turning motion of the head of the breech-boltis prevented by the new construction of the extractor.
For considerably simplifying the manufacture of the cartridge magazine and the operation of the parts mounted therein, the former which is arranged to hold two' or more cartridges may be made of drawn material and be fixed to the trigger guard by any suitable means. The end walls of the magazine are provided with slots in which lugs on the cartridge follower are guided, the forward, slot. being preferably taken higher than the rear one or right up to the top, in order that the nose of the cartridge is forced into the correct position for the sliding of the cartridge into the chamber or the cartridge holder. The elevating spring for the cartridge follower is made of flat material and may be put together of separate parts with sharp or round bends, which is a very chea compared wit the spring bent from one piece, as the pieces are easier to cut and require little bending, which is a lengthy operation with good steel material.
In the accompanying drawing a constructional examplejof the invention is shown in nine figures.
