EDWARD BELGROVE, OF VERNON, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
COMBINATION SAW AND SQUARE CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed June 17, 1925. Serial No. 37,877.
This invention appertains generally to improvements in wood working tools and specifically to handsaws, the principal object of the inven. ion residing in the provision of a tool of this character includng a saw blade having a straight graduated ruling and scale edge, and a handleon the end thereof, the forward edges of which are disposed at right-angles to said straight graduated ruling and scale edge forming a square, thus providing arcoinbination tool which may be used for squaring and sawing lumber.
A. further object of the invention is to provide, in a tool of this character a handle having a squaring edge formed of hinged sections, adapted to be folded into compact relation when the tool is used as a saw, and to be extended to form an adequate squaring edge when the tool is used for squaring purposes.
Another objectof the invention is to provide a tool of the character stated having a squaring edge formed of dual sections hinged together and secured in closed and extended position by means of a jackknife" locking spring.
W'ith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear more fully as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a tool constructed in accordance with an acceptable form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the squaring edge of the tool as it would appear when taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 on Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the squaring edge of the tool in extended position.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding components throughout the views.
The numeral 4 designates the blade of a saw which isprovided with the usual teeth 5. The upper edge 6 of the said blade is made straight and is graduated, on one or both sides, according to the adaptation of the tool, in any suitable standard of dimension, such as inches. A handle 7 is provided on the end of the blade 4 as shown.
The subject-matter of the present invention resides in the provision of one, or double squaring edges, on or conjunct with the handle 7 to form a square whentaken in conjunction with the straight edge 6 of the blade 4, so that the tool may be used for squaring lumber and then cutting the same. The squaring edge per se is preferably formed of two sections 8 and 9. Section 8 is riveted to the blade 4 by the rivets 10 and 11, the latter rivet extending through the lug 12 integral with, said section, shown in dotted position in Fig. 3. ' Lugs 13 and 14 are also formed integral with the section 8, between which the lug 15 of the section 9 seats, the same being hinged together by the pintle 16. In Fig. 2, the shape of the lug 15 is clearly disclosed. It will be noted that the same is provided with parallel fiat surfaces 17 and 18 and the rounded end portion 19. A flat spring 20 working through the longitudinal slot 21 in the section 8, is employed to lock the section 9 in folded and extended positions, the same being riveted to the section 8 by the rivets 22, best shown in Fig. 2. A knob 23 is positioned on the section 9 by means of which said section may be easily gripped for extending purposes.
VJhen folded, as shown in Fig. 1, the section 9 is retained by the spring 20 by virtue of the flat surface 18 which abuts said spring and prevents accidental displacement or vibration of said section when the saw is used for cutting lumber. For squaring purposes, the section 9 is folded or hinged downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3. As the said section is extended, the eccentric surface 19 of the lug 15 bears against the spring 20 and forces the same to recede through the slot 21 in section 8, which spring when said section is extendedinto alinement with the section 8, will snap against the surface 17 of the lug 15 and securely retain said section 9 in extended position and prevent displacement or wabbling.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the tool may be used for sawing purposes with the section 9 of the squaring edge in folded position as shown in Fig. 1 without inconvenience or obstruction, which section may be used in folded position for squaring small pieces of lumber such as the end of a scantling. When squaring boards of considerable width requiring an accurate cut the squaring edge should be as long as possible to provide an adequate squaring surface, and for this purpose the sect-ion 9 is extended to the position shown in Fig. 3. In this position the squaring edge of considerable length is provided, the accuracy of which may always be relied upon.
A right-hand saw may be provided with a squaring edge on the side of the blade shown in the drawings, with the scale graduated on the opposite side of the blade, so that when used for squaring purposes, the saw may be laid with the extended squaring edge against the edge of the piece of hunber, with the scale in View for measuring purposes. F or a left-hand saw, the squaring edge may be on the opposite side of the blade to that shown, with the scale graduated on the other side of the blade, illustrated in the drawings. For a dual purpose saw, that is to say, a saw adapted for use by left and right handed mechanics, two squaring edges may be employed uth scale graduations on both sides of the blade.
'While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination, and arrangement of elements may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new is 1. In combination, a saw blade having a straight ruling and scale edge, a handle on said blade, an extendable squaring edge mounted on said blade conjunctwith said handle, formed of two sections, one of said sect-ions being secured to said saw blade, the other said section being hinged to the section aforesaid, and means for retaining said hinged sections in folded and in extended positions.
In combination, a saw blade having a straight ruling and scale edge, a handle on said saw blade, and a squaring edge conjunct with said handle formed of two hinged tions, one of which is secured to said saw blade, the other section being hinged to said section aforesaid; and a flat spring mounted in alinement with said hinged section and abutting the same for retaining said hinged section in folded and in extended positions.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
EDWARD BELGROVE.
