Description
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM R. GARDNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRo-vEMEN-r IN REFLEcToRs.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 158,929, dated January 19,1875; application filed December 10, 1874.
" To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILL1AM R. GARDNER,
v of New York, county of New York and State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reiiectors to be attached to Glass Globes, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wire frame or holder to be attached to ordinary glass globes used around gas-jets, for the purpose of supporting a relector above such globe.
It also consists in a reflector made of white glass, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art y A, which is to fit over the edge in the top of the globe. These clamps are extended long enough to form each two bearings at a a sufficiently far apart to prevent the frame from tilting to either side. From the center of each clamp the wire extends upward, forming arms B B,at the upper end of each of which the wire is bent to form a hook, b,- and from this hook it is extended a suitable distance, forming another hook, b'. The center of the Wire forms a diagonal brace, C, connecting the two hooks b. The brace C may be of any desired length, and is, of course, longer than the diameter of the top opening of the globe; hence the arms B B must be sprung inward, to allow of the clamps A A being placed on the globe. The spring of the wire, therefore, keeps the clamps in place ou the globe, and causes the frame or holder to be retained in proper position thereon. D represents the retlector made in any suitable form and size to be placed in and held by the hooks b b and b b. The diagonal brace c may be made bowed, so that the spring thereot` will cause the retlector to be clamped and held rmly. The reflector D I make of white glass, so as to be semi-transparent, and it may be made in the form of a fiat disk or concave or convex, as may be desired.
A reflector made ot' white glass and supported above a gas-jet in a globe will increase the light by utilizing that part which otherwise is absorbed by the dim ceiling, at the same time as it will give a soft light above in stead of causing a dark spot, as with metal reflectors. It may be used with advantage in private dwellings, as well as in stores, storewiudows, public places of amusement, Svc.
In places where the gas-jet is near the ceiling it will also act as a shield, to prevent the heat and smoke from injuring it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A Wire frame or holder, constructed as described, to form the clamps-A A, arms B B, hooks b b and b b', and diagonal brace c, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The globe of a lamp and a Wire frame or holder, al1 combined and operating to support the reiector above and over the lamp, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth. f
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto atlx my signature.
WILLIAM It. GARDNER.
