W. LEUNIS HAIR WAVING DEVICE Filed Nov. .'5, 1924 /fam e l5' I l INVENTOR j ATTORNEY l ITNESS:
Patented June 15, 1926.
- UNITED STATES:
WILLIAM LEUNIS, or NEwroRK, N..Y.
, IIAIR-WAVING DEVICE. i
Application led November 3, 1924. Serial No. 747,600.
This invention relates to improvements in hair waving devices, vand has for its primary object the provision oit a device which permits the waving of the hair by heat, without necessitating the holding of the same during. the curling vor waiving operation.
Another object of they invention resides in the provision of a curling device capable of being supported upon the head of the user and which includes a core or cartridge which is adapted to be heated and about which the hair is wound, the said cartridge being of such material as to retain the heat for a suflicient period oi time after being heated by placing the same in boiling water or over any heat sullicient to cause the cartridge to perform its functions.
A further object is to provide a curling device which embodies a heating core to which a pair of clamping members or jaws are pivotally connected, one of said jaws serving as a handle during the winding of the hair about the heating element.
A still further object is to construct a hair curler of the type mentioned which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and easy to apply to or remove from the hair.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention showing the parts in position ready for use.
Figure 2 is a similar view showingthe po sition of the parts when in use.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure a is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side elevation showing a slightly modiiied form.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, the reference numeral 10 designates my improved hair curling device in its entirety, and which includes a hollow tubular sleeve 11, open at one end as at 12 and closed at its opposite end as at 13. The closed end is rounded in a manner similar to the end of a v'bullet so that the device may be easily passed catching on any portionA of the same.
through the hair without fear of the hair A heating core or cartridge 1li is arranged within the sleeve 11 by passing the same through the/open end 12, and is iri'ctionally held therein by the walls of the sleeve 11 and is of such material as to quickly heat up when subject-ed to the heat of a flame. The cartridge is capable of retaining heatfor a relatively long period of time. For example, the cartridge may be constructed of acompositlon consisting of soap stone, asbestos and copper.
Pivoted to the lower end of the tubular sleeve as at 15 are clamping jaws or sections 16 and 17, which are semi-circular in cross section to enclose the sleeve when the sections are in co-acting position, the meeting edges of the sections overlapping as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
The tubular sleeve 11 is provided with a flexible tail 18 having ateat 18 for c'o-action with a recess 19 adjacent one end of the jaw 16. When the jaw is in the. position shown in Figure l of the drawing, the same serves as a handle for permitting the winding of the hair about the heating element.
In practice, the heating element with the cartridge inserted therein is placed over a flame until suliiciently heated, after which the ends of the hair are wound about the sleeve 11 and the jaws 17 brought into position to clamp the ends of the hair. The device is then rotatedby means -oi the handle to wind the hair about the sleeve and jaw as will be readily understood. After the hair has been wound in this manner, the jaw 1'6 is closed to the position shown in Figure 2 of the drawing which locks the de vice in position upon the head of the user. The device may be left in position for a' period 'of ii'teen minutes without fear of singeing the hair and further does not require the holding of the samel during the curling or waving process.
In Figure 5 of the drawing, I have shown a modified form ci device which is adapted for use when it is desired to form a Marcel wave. This form is identical to the preferred form with the exception that one or' the jaws is eliminated. In this form, the numeral 2O designates the tubular sleeve within which theheating core or cartridge Vis positioned, and pivotally secured to the lower end of the sleeve is a jaw 21. This forni of device is inserted in the hair from the front to rear and the hairA clamped between the sleeve and jaw. No handle is re.- quired in this form as there is no Winding action as mentioned in the preferred form. From the foregoingdescription`r it Will be seen that I have provided a curling device which may be conveniently employed by individuals for forming; a Wave in the hair and which does not require the holding` of the device during the waving operation.
While I have Idescribed what I deem to be the lnost desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any Way departing` from the spirit of my invention and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is 1. A hair Waving device comprising' a tubular heating' element7 a member pivoted thereto for co-action with said element for securing the ends of the hair therebetween` and a handle pivoted to said element and adapted to coact with said member when in hair Waving' position to completely enclose the major portion of said element.
2. A hair Waving device comprising a tubular sleeve open at one end and closed at its opposite end, aheating cartridge insertiblel in the open end of said tubular sleeve, and a pair ot' (2o-acting jaws pivoted to said tubular sleeve for completely enclosing` the major portion of said sleeve when the same are movedl to hair curling position.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
