Description

June 15 ,1926. 1,588,914
HJsMnH TABLE:-
Filed not. 16. 1925 WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented June 15, 1926.
HARRY L. SMITH, OF ,GRIGGSVILLE ILLINOES.
TABLE.
Application led October 16, 1923.
rIhis invention relates to improvements in supports especially designed for attaching tables to beds, chairs and the like, an object being to provide an adjustable support by means of which a table may be positioned to suit the convenience of the user, and in which the various parts which comprise the support may be separated for packing or shipment and easily reassembled.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable support which includes novel means for attaching the same in position.
Vith the above and other objects at hand, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the invention applied to the side rail of a bed, the said rail being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the support.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section, and
Figure Ll is a detail perspective view of the clamp.
Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote the corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates one of the side rails of a bed to which the invention is shown as applied.
The table to which the support is attached is indicated at 11, while the support is shown as including a standard 12. rPhe standard is longitudinally extensible and for this purpose comprises a tubular member 13 and a rod li, the latter being freely slidable within the former and being held against relative sliding and rotary movement by means of a set screw 15. The rod 14C has a threaded connection with an attaching plate 16, which is secured to the table 11 by any suitable means, as by screws or similar fastening devices.
The end of the tubular member opposite the rod 14C is internally threaded as at 17 so as to receive the threaded end O the Serial No. 668,911.
shank 18 of a clamp 19. The clamp further includes divergent arms 20 which are arranged at a right angle to the shank 18 and which carry at their outer ends rightangularly disposed lugs 21. Extending through and threadedly engaging the shank 18 is a screw 22 having at one end a thumb piece 23 and at its opposite end a head 24 which has a swivelled connection with the screw. As will be seen from Figure l of the drawings this clamp provides convert ient means of attachment to the side rail of a bed or other article, so that the table may be conveniently arranged, for the use of an invalid or other person. The clamp 19 and standard 12 are held against relative movement by means of a set screw 25.
lt will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings, that the invention provides a simple and con'- venient supporting device for the purposes above mentioned, and one in which the parts may be readily separated and assembled.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is rherein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:-
An adjustable support comprising a longitudinally adjustable standard, an attaching plate at one end thereof and threadedly engaging the standard, a clamp at theopposite end of the standard, said clamp comprising a substantially L-shaped member, a threaded shank extending from one arm of said member and threadedly engaging the opposite end of the standard, disposed divergent arms extending from the other arm of said member, right-angularly disposed lugs extending from the outer "ends of the arms, an adjusting screw threaded through the first mentioned arm of the i.- shaped member and' spaced from and disposed centrally of the divergent arms and a clamping head carried by the screw.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature.
