Description

June 15,1926. 1,588,890 L.HORVATH SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR GAS STOVES Filed Feb. 17, 1926 INVENTOR l guz's Harm t/z A ATTORNEY Patented June 15,, 1926.
UNITED STATES Louis noava'rn, or New xonx, N. Y.
SAFETY armcnunn'r roa en's srovns;
This inventior'relates to a safety attachment for a gas stdve or range, and more particularly to a gang lock for the handles of the as'valves thereof.
8 T e ordinary type of .gas range now commonly used has handles on the valves that control the flow of gas to the burners. With suchranges .there is a danger that the valves may be accidentally opened by brushing against the handles, or by children in playing or otherwise, or from other causes.
'One of the objects of my invention is to provide a safety attachment'having a snap catch whereby it may be readily locked in lace on strange to cover the valve-handles 1n their closed position so as to prevent them from being moved or tampered with.
Another object is to provide an'attachment of this character which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and can be readily applied to any ordinary gas range. With these and further objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described and claimed. j
The accompanying drawings illustrate .a preferred embodiment of the invention in which:
v Figure 1 is a front view of the attachment as applied to'a gas range, the" gas feed pipes being shown insection;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and,
Fig. 3 1s a perspective view of the attachment detached from the gas range.
, Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views."
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates a gas suppl or feed pipe having a plurality of branc es 2 leading to the burners of they range not shown). pipe is provided wlth the customary valves 3, onefor each branch pipe, each having ahandle 4; by which 'it' may be opened or closed to control-the flow-of gas to the burn- 'ers. 'Theseparts may all be of the usual construction. v 50 In carrying out my invention I employ a substantially U-shaped cover 5 adapted to fit over and receive the handles when in their closed position, in which position all of the handles willbe in alignment. When the provided with a slot or opening provided with a plurality The feed bpplieatlon'nled February 17, 1926. Serial No. 88,755
cover is placed over thehandles and locked in position, any further movement of the handles is prevented, and consequently the 1 valves cannot be accidentally or unintentionally opened.
.The device for locking the cover in place comprises a shackle 6 pivoted or hinged at 7 to a lug 8 extending downwardly from a wall of the cover member. The free end of the shackle is provided with a spring or snap catch 9 which is preferably formed with a square shoulder 10. The cover is 11 to receive the free end of the shackle. In fastening the attachment to a gas range, the shackle is swung upon its pivot so as to pass around one of the branch pipes 2 and through the slot 11. In this position the shoulder 10 of the spring 9 catches over an edge ofthe slot 11, thereby'locking the attachment in-place. that the end of the spring catch is preferably beveled to facilitate its passage through the slot. When it is desired to remove the at It should be observed.
tachment, the catch maybe readily disengaged by merely pressing against the end 'of the spring. For convenience in applying the attachment to rangesof difl'erentcon struction, the-locking device is preferably made so as to be adjustable both longitu- .dinally and verticallywith respect .of the cover, and to this end the cover is preferably of slots 11.
For ordinary purposes the lock afforded by the ring catch will provide sufficient security at in the case of prolonged absence. or for other reasons,
' and 9.
It is to be understood that I do not limit '90 it may be desired I to lock the cover more securely in. place. This ma be done conveniently by passing myself to the precise construction herein shown and describedas minor changes may be made therein without departing from the claimed invention.
'What I claim is v 1. An attachment for locking the valvehandles. of a gas range' in closed position, comprising a cover adapted to fit over the handles and formed with a slot,'a shackle pivoted to the cover with its free end positioned to pass through the slot, and a spring catch at the. free end of the shackle for fastioned to vpass through the slot, and aspring tening it' in the slot. at the free end of the shackle formed with a 2. attachment for locking the valveshoulder adapted to engage over an edge of W .handles of a gas range in closed position, the slot so as to fasten the shackle in the 5 comprising a cover adapted to fit over the slot when inserted therein.
