ordinarily used by carpenters; the casing all being characterized by a closure that is not liable to casually open and adapted to be expeditiously and easily opened as when it is desired to remove the spirit level from the casing for use.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter' described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation showing asv closed the casing constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 ofV Figure 1. t
Figure 3 is a top plan view illustrative of the fastening comprised in my improvement.
Figure a is a longitudinal vertical section of the said fastening.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the lviews of the drawings.
The major portion of my improved casing is formed, by preference, of aluminum, but this, of course, is not of the essence of my invention, it being within the `purview of the invention to form the casing of any material or materials best suited to its purpose.
Among other elements the casing comprises a body 1 which may be of any length in the discretion of the manufacturer, ac`
cording to thelength of the spirit level to be carried in and protected by the casing. The said body 1 is closed at one end and open at its opposite end, and its open end is designed to be closed through the medium of a closure member 2 hingedly connected at 3 to the end of the body and having side flanges 4L and an end flange the said flange being located at a point remote from the hinge connection, and the ends of the side flanges l being beveled. as designated by 6 in order to permit of free movement of the closure member to and from the position shown in Figure 1. Manifestly in the said position the closure member 2 will etica tively exclude dust and dirt as well as moisture from the spirit level contained in the case, and at the same time will protect the case against injury due to shock and jar.
Appropriately fixed tothe closure member 2 and extending from the free f end thereof is a standard G', on which is a pivotally connected tongue 7, from which prov'ects a sin 8 in which is a notch or kerf 9 Figure 4. The said tongue 7 is designed to be swung to and from the position shown in Figures 1 and 4i, and is also designed to be employed in conjunction with the novel and advantageous keeper means best illustrated yin Figure 4. In addition to a casing 10 having an opening 11 anda slot 12, the keeper i means comprises a keeper ymember 13, backed by a spring 111,' and having a linger piece 15 the shank of which is movable in the before mentioned slot 12. The aperture '11 receives the pin 8 as illustrated, and the free end of the pin being rounded or beveled as shown,
the introduction of the pin through the apery ture 11 will be attended by backward movementof the keeper 13 against the action of its spring,` followed by the forward snapping or movement of the keeper 13 into the notch 9 for the strong holding of the tongue 7 in closed position, and for the retention of the closure member 2 in closed position and in such state that dust and moisture will be precluded from gaining access to the interior of the casing and bringing about injury to the spirit level contained inthe said casing. On retraction of the keeper member 13 through the medium of its linger piece 15, the pin of the tongue 7 will be released, and when the said tongue 7 is released and is swung upwardly and outwardly, it will be manifest `that the closure member 2 may be conveniently swung open for the ready removal of a spirit level from the casing. ln the casing l() .is a well 1G, and in said well is a coiled spring 17 on which is superposed a Jfollower 18, said follower 18 being freely movable in the well 16. When the tongue 7 is closed and its pin 3 is introduced through the aperture 11, the said pin by acting against the platform 18 and depressing the same, operates to put the spring 17 under considerable tension. From this it follows that when the keeper member 13 is retracted as before described, the
IVhile my novel casing is designed more especially to contain and protect a spirit level or the like, I would have it distinctly understood that my invention is not limited to a casing for the specific purpose ascribed, .the casing of my invention being put to any use `to which it is applicable and being made, therefore, in various lshapes and sizes.
I have entered Iinto a detailed description of the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an `exact understanding of all of the details .of said embodiment. I do not desire, hou/evento beunderstood as eonlining myself tol Lthe specific construction disclosed, my invention being ldefined by my appended `claims .within the scope .of Which changes 'in structure and arrangement may be .made Without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s
1. The combination `of a casing body, a
.ard fixed to said closure member, a tongue pivotally connected to said standard and yhaving a lateral pin With4 a beveled or rounded ,end and with a notch or kerf in its side, a casing exterior of and fixed to the casing body and having an aperture in one ,of its lWalls and a slot in rear of said aperture, a Well in said casing, a spring in said Well, a. follower superposed on and movable .by lthe spring and adapted to be opposed to .the end `ofthe pin on said tongue, and a reciprocatory lreeper member, spring backed and movable yin the casing and into and out vof engagement with ythe ypin on the tongue and having a. linger piecemovable in the slot .of the casing Wall, the said finger piece being arranged at the opposite side of the tongue `With reference to ,the pivotal connection .of said tongue to the standard on the closure member. K
A casing comprising a body open at one end, a closure member hingedly connected to said body, said closure member constructed and arranged to brealr joints .with the body, a `anvinigable tongue carried .by the closure memberand having a lateral pin with a .beveled or rounded end and also with a A.notch or lerf in 4its side, a casing on the body and exterior thereof ,and `adapted .to lreceive said *pi-n, a :spring pressed follower in said casing for impelling the pin ,andtongue and a spring `backed manually operable keeper member in the casing for automatically engaging and holding the pin on introduction ,of the latter intoA .the casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
