GEORGE E, STEVENSON, OF INDIANAPGLIS, INDIANA.
ARTIG'ULATED DOOR.
Application filed July 11,
The object of my invention is to produce a door of the roll curtain type, and means by which the same may be either manually or mechanically manipulated. The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective of a door opening equipped with my improved door; Fig. 2 an elevation in a partial vertical section of the construction with the door opening closed; Fig. 3 a horizontal section on a larger scale on line 3-3- of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a vertical section on line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 a vertical section on line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 a vertical fragmentary section, on an enlarged scale, at the upper right hand corner of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 a fragmentary perspective section on the articulated closure; Fig. 8 a fragmentary horizontal section of a suitable belt or chainforming part of the closure; Fig. 9 a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, on line 99 of Fig. 2; Fig. 10 a vertical section on line 1010 of F ig. 9, and Fig. 11 a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, on line 1111 of Fig. 10.
In the drawings 15 indicates the opening to be closed and flanked at the sides by casings 16 and 17; at the top by casing 18, and at the bottom by groove 20.
Mounted in casing 16 is a shaft 21 provided at top and bottom with drums 22, 22 to each of which is secured one end of a chain 23 formed of suitable links so that they may be wrapped around drums 22. Mounted in casing 17 is a vertical shaft 24 carrying a drum 25 referably of the same diameter as drums 22, the opposite end of chain 23 being attached thereto. While the links forming chains 23 may be of uniform length, they may conveniently be of graduated lengths as clearly indicated in Fig. 9, the arrangement being such that they may thus be more readily wrapped in several layers around drums 22 and 25.
Each link of chain 23 carries a plate 26 to which may be secured either a doorforming slat 27 extending from one chain to the other, or a short block 28 arranged to fill groove 20, the slats 27 and blocks 28 being articulated, as indicated in Fig. 7, or in any other suitable manner, so that the slats 27 will form a suitable closure for slot 20, and blocks 28 will form a suitable filler for slot when slats 27 are retracted from opening 15. As it is not feasible in most instances to provide drums of ,a sufiicient diameter to accommodate, in
1924. Serial No. 725,528.
a single layer, all of the slats 27 necessary to close opening 15, it is necessary to provide some means for permitting adjustment the distance between the axes of drums 22 and and for this purpose the shaft 24 is mounted, top and bottom, in sliding blocks 30 which are normally urged away from shaft 21 by springs 31, the arrangement being such as to keep chains 2-3 taut at all times.
It is desirable that a door of this type be mechanically manipulated, and for that reason I provide an electric motor connected by a suitable gear train 41 with shaft 21 and, in order that the movement of the chains 23 may at all times be the result of pull, rather than a push, shaft 21 is connected with shaft 24 by a cross shaft 42 and pairs of meshing bevel gears 43 and 44, the gear 43 which is mounted on shaft 42 being splined thereon and associated with the adjacent block 30 in such manner as to partake of all of the lateral movements of shaft 24 under the action of springs 31.
In view of the possibility of disarrangement of the mechanical operating means, it is desirable that manual operating means be provided and for that purpose I provide a hand wheel carried by shaft 61 provided at its inner end with clutch 62 adapted to be moved into or out of connection with a clutch element 63 carried by the shaft of the motor, the arrangement being such that, by shifting shaft 61 axially, the hand wheel may be made effective or ineffective to drive shafts 21 and 24, and shaft 61 may be readily retained in either one of its positions by suitable spring retainer 65 of a well known type. Guides 66 are arranged at the top and bottom of opening 15 for chain 23.
I claim as my invention:

A door comprising a pair of parallel winding drums, two chains forming driving connections between the drums, door-forming slats connecting from links of one chain with links 01" the other chain, ancl ineans by Whichone of said clruins may be rotateclr 2.
