Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. BENNETT, OF BEAVER DAM, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILER ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I5S,45S, dated January 5, 1875; application filed December 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BENNETT,
of Beaver Dam, county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Boiler Attachment, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of washboiler attachments consisting of a perforated plate supported at any desired height above the bottom of the boiler, and provided at each end with a tube, perforated near the top on the inner side, for the passage of the steam and suds; and the nature of my invention consists V in the construction of the perforated plate, and also in a slide arranged in connection with each tube, to open and close the perforations therein, as occasion may require, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my washboiler attachment, one of the tubes being partially broken open to show the slide therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents a plate provided around its edge with a downward-projecting rim, B, and made of such size as to fit on the bottom of an ordinary wash-boiler. By means of a suitable instrument the plate A is cut with a number of semicircular slots, to, the metal inside of each semicircle being bent slightly upward, forming lips b b, as shown. These slots and lips may be arranged in any desired manner, in transverse rows, the lips pointing from the center toward both ends, or otherwise, as may be deemed most advantageous.
By this construction of slots and lips, even the finest fabric is prevented from passing through, and the perforations will not become clogged.
O 0 represent the tubes at the. ends of the plate A, which tubes may be of any desired form, closed at the upper ends, and provided on the inner sides with perforations w as, for the passage of the steam and water, as is usual in this class of wash-boiler attachments. Inside of each tube 0 is arranged a slide, D, held against the inner side of the tube by means of a spring, G, or other equivalent mechanical device. The slide is provided with a rod, 01, passing up through the end of the tube, by means of which the slide may be moved up and down, to open and close the perforations or. By closing these perforations the flow ofwater is stopped, While removing the clothes from the boiler.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The plate A, provided with the semicircular slots at, and upwardly-bentlips l), for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the perforated tube G, slide D, with rod d and the spring G, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto aflix my signature this 28th day of November, 1874.
