CAM FOR LOOMS.
Application filed November This invention relates to cams for looms and other purposes.
These camsexperience hard usage and become worn so that from time to time it is necessary to remove the cams from their shafts either for repairs or to substitute new cams for the old ones.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a cam which may be inserted on or removed from its shaft quickly, easily and without disturbing the camshaft or dismantling the machine, and an important feature of the invention resides in the overlapping construction of the cam sections whereby they may be rigidly secured together.
The various features of the invention will as best understood by reference to the following description of one good form thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, where- 1n Fig. 1 is a sectional view thru a cam shaft showing one face of a cam constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the outer face of one of the cam sections;

Referring to the drawing, the cam selected herein to illustrate the invention is of the type used in a picking motion for looms, and is formed of the cam sections 1 and 2 which are firmly secured together when in operative position, but may be separated when the cam is to be removed from or placed upon the cam operating shaft 3.
The cam section 1 consists of a flange portion having an outer rim portion 1 of increased thickness, and the cam section 2 likewise consists of a flange portion having an outer rim portion 2 of increased thickness. The cam sections are shown as constructed to extend nearly entirely around the cam shaft so that when they are secured together the webportions overlap each other to a substantial degree, this being desirable as it facilitates the securing of the two sections firmly together as will presently appear.

tral hole 4 adapted to receive the usual bushmg 5 that is keyed or otherwise rigidly secured to the shaft 3, and this cam section is 1 provided with a passage 6 adapted to clear the cam shaft when the section 1 isplaced upon or removed from the shaft. The other cam section 2 is likewise provided with a hub receiving hole 7 to receive the bushing 5 and is provided with a passage 8 thru which the shaft 3 may pass into the hole 7, and the passages 6 and 8 are located so that I when the cam sections are secured together the passages are closed. To this end the cam section .1 has a web portion 9 of increased thickness and of a configuration to close the passage 8 while the section 2 has a web portion 10 of increased thickness that fits the passage 6.
The cam sections 1 and 2 are preferably i so constructed that when they are moved laterally into engagement with each other the parts interlock. This is accomplished by providing the cam sections with the parts 9 and 10 just mentioned which fit in the passages 8 and 6 respectively, and is further accomplished by providing the web portion of the cam section 1 with the laterally projecting lugs 11 and 12 adapted to enter correspondingly shaped notches 13 and 14 respectively in the cam section 2. The cam section 2 is shown as having a projection 15 17 which secure the cam to the bushing 5" pass thru the overlapping portions of the sections and clamp them firmly together. Thebushing 5 is shown as having the usual oppositely extending wings 18 adapted to receive the bolts 17, and these wings may be provided near their outer ends with teeth adapted to mesh with the teeth of the curved rack portions 19 upon the outer face of the cam section2. It may be desirable to adjust the loom cam angularly relative to the drive shaft to advance or retard the cam nose 20 and the sections 1 and 2 are therefore provided with the bolt receiving slots 21 which permit the cam to be rotated relatively to the bolts 17 to the desired position and then clamped in place with the teeth upon the thickness as at '24. The outer rim'of the cam nose 20 is curved at its inner edge to fit the correspondingly shaped edges 25 and 26 of the cam sections 1 and 2, and raised nubs 27 may be provided upon the, cam section 1 to form a seatfor the flange 23 of the cam nose. As a result of this construction the cam nose 20 may be firmly secured in place by a single bolt 28 that passes thru the flange plate 23 and thru the holes 29 and 30 in the cam sections, and this bolt serves to clamp the overlapping portions of the cam sections 1 and 2 firmly together. A notch 31 formed in the cam near its central hole may be provided to clear a set screw upon the bushing 5.
By constructing the cam sections 1 and 2 in the manner shown and described, the bolts 17 for securing the cam to its shaft serve also to firmly hold the cam sections together, and if the cam is-provided with a removable nose as shown the nose secu ing bolt 28 serves to clamp the cam sections together.
What is claimed is l. A picker cam for looms, comprising separate cam sections adapted to be secured to each other in overlapping relation and each section being constructed to extend nearly around the cam operating shaft and having a shaft receiving passage arranged so that when the sections are assembled both passages lie at the same side of the cam shaft, apick nose overlying portions of both sections and secured thereto, and additional means for securing the overlapping sections together about the cam shaft.
2. A picker cam for looms, comprising separate cam sections adapted to be secured to each other in overlapping relation and both sections being constructed to extend considerably more than half way around the same side of the cam shaft, a nose supporting flange carried by one of the overlapping sections, a pick nose adapted to rest upon the flange, a bolt for securing the nose and overlapping portions of the sections together, and additional means for securing the overlapping sections together about the cam shaft.
3. A picker cam for looms, comprising separate cam sections each of which is adapted to extend more than half-way around the cam shaft and has a shaft receiving passage, a pick nose, means for securing the pick nose and the two cam sections together so that alignment with the corresponding passage of the other section and a pick nose detachably secured to the pick cam sections.
5. A picker cam for looms, comprisingv separate cam sections each of which is adapted to extend more than half-way around the cam shaft and has a shaft receiving passage extending inwardly from the periphery, interengaging projections on the sections arranged so that the sections can be assembled only by their movement laterally into engagement with each other, a separate pick nose, and means for securing the pick nose to the cam sections and the cam sections together so thatboth passages lie at the same' side of the shaft.
6. A picker cam for looms, comprising two separate cam sections that overlap each other, a removable cam nose adapted to be secured to overlapping portions of the cam sections, and a bolt that passes thru the cam nose and the overlapping portions to secure the three parts of the cam together.
7. A picker cam for looms, comprising two separate cam sections that overlap each other and which are cut away where they overlap to form a seat for the cam nose, a cam nose constructed to fit said seat, and means passing thru the cam nose and adjacent overlapping portions to secure the three parts of the cam together.
8. A picker cam for looms, comprising two separate cam sections that overlap each other to a substantial degree and are formed with shaft receiving passages leading to the central opening of each section, and a removable cam nose secured to the sections and located at the opposite side of the sections from the shaft receiving passages.
9. A picker cam for looms, comprising two separate cam sections that overlap each other to a substantial degree and each formed with a shaft receiving passage, a cam nose upon a section and located at the opposite side of the cam shaft from the shaft receiving passages, and means for securing the sections together.
10. In combination with a loom cam shaft having cam supporting means, a picker cam, comprising two separate cam sections each of which extends more than halfway around the cam shaft to form overlapping portions at the opposite sides of the axis of the cam. and bolts passing thru said overlapping portions and thru the supporting ineans upon the cam shaft whereby the bolts secure the can) sections together and also secure the cam to the cam shaft.
