Application led September 22, 1922. Berialvli'o. 589,877..
' To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD T. PENNIG,
.a citizen of theUnited States', residing at St'. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
' clear, and exact description of the invention,
. walls of residences, oliices and other buildings, and is designed particularly as an im 'provement on the vmail box disclosed and claimed in my prior Patent #1,423,251, of
date July 18, 1922.
Generally stated, the4 present invention consists ofthe novel construction, arrangement and combinations oi-.parts hereinafter described and defined in""the claims. More specifically stated, the invention is .directed toa feature that makes the box adjustable vtowalls of different thickness, such, for example, as walls built with four-inch or six inch studding. This is accomplished by extremely simple and eflicient means, the pre ferred form of which is illustrated in the 'accompanying drawings, wherein like charac-..
ters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
`Fig. 1 isl a front elevation showing the corhplete box; 1 J Fig). 2 shows the box positioned in a wal-l, said ox being sectioned on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;v v
Fig. 3 isV an oblique transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 4 4 of'Fig. 2.
The mail box 5 is in the form of a vertically elongated sliell made .rectangular in horizontal cross-section and preferably made outof galvanized sheet, iron. This box will be of a thickness andwidth adapting it to structure and registers with 'endhrgecured to a rectangular inside door frame Tito which an outlet door 8`is hinged at its upprisedge. To provide for expansion or adjustment to walls ofdierent thicknesses, the box 5, in the upper portion 'of its outer Wall, is provided/'With an oblique slidably adjus. able intake spout 9. also preferably ,made of galvanized sheet iron and made rectangular in crosssection. This adjustable 'spout 9;y is
heldV for sliding movements in the upper portion of the mail boxby a spout guide made up, as shown, of an'obliqueextension 10 and aztransverse guide bar 11 of the box 5. The said extension' lis formed by an 4oblique upward continuation .of the outer' wallof the-box- 5 and by forwardly extended i portionsaof'the side plates of said box. The
- guide han: 11`is obliquely setso that 'it engages the; oblique top of the spout 9 and, at itsends, 1s soldered or otherwise rigidly se- 'cured to the sides of the box. Also, the sides' of the box 'are preferably provided with anguiar guide cleats 12 that extend obliquely 'downward from the bar 1l and assist in hol 4 ing the spout 9 for straight-line adjustments with itsouter edge always in a vertical plane.
The outer edge portion of the spout 9 is in the form of a reetangularmarginal flange vthat extends throu h the'outer wall b of the wall structure an gis rigidly secured to a rectangular 13, preferably yby lscrews 14,l the heads of which are on the innerl side of saidfram'e 13. An inletdoor 15 is hinged at its upper edge to the upper' portion of the frame 13 by va hinge rod 16 and is arranged to swing into the spout 9. A. torsion spring 17,v applied around the rod 16 and vanchored at one end to the frame 13 'andl at its other end to the door 15, yieldingly holds said door normally closed. i
In applying thebox in a wall, the body thereof will be anchored against the inside wall a and then the spout 9 will be adjusted so as to bring the outside door frame 13 to the proper position at the exterior of the outer wall b. Then the spout may be rigidly secured in its set adjustment by suitable bar 11 andthrough a slot in the upper plate of the spout 9.
In Fig. 2, the boi: is shown as applied in a,
outside marginal dooiframe' n p Loeaiee thin Wall etruotune, such melde where 2 I. d are used, but when the 'box is'applied in a, thinker Wellstrueture, there will be space between the outer Wall o and the outside woll of seid box. Obviously, the adjustable 'spout makes it an'easy matter to adjust tlhe non to wall structures of di'erent thickneesesand .makes it unnecessary for the manufaeturer to ineke' and carry in stock a large number of different 'types of boxes.
' What claim is: v
l. A mail box adapted to be mounted l between the inner end outer` walls of a building, provided at the lower portion of its in ner Wall with an outlet opening and having.
at the upper portion of its outer Wall .an
adjustable portion formed with an inlet opening, said adjustable portion of the mail boxhaving et its inlet opening a marginal flange equipped 'with outstanding apertured eers, and a doonequipped door frame cap ping the marginal flange on the adjustable portion of mail box, and screws loosely extended through saidV `ears and having .threaded engagement with the door frame.
guide, an oblique spout that is obliquely adjustable and is formed with .an inlet openn ing, the outlet of said body of the mail box.
3. A. mail box adapted to be mounted between the inner and outer Walls of a building, provided at the lower portion of its inner Wall with an outlet opening and having 'l0 at the upper portion of its outer Wall an oblique spout guide and, Working in said spout guide, an oblique spout that is obliquely'adjustable and isformed with an inlet open1ng,' and'olampingfmeans for securing 45 said spout to said spout guide in different adjustments.
4E. A mail box adapted to be mounted between the inner and outer Walls of a build ing, provided at the lower portion of its in- 59 ner wall with an outlet opening and having at the upper portion of itsv outer wall an oblique spout guide and, Working in said;- spout guide, an oblique. spout that is obliquely adjustable and is formed 'with an in- 55 let opening, said spout having a, rectangular outwardly extended marginal flange, a rectangular marginal frame secured to said flange, and a hinged door applied. to said incr.
zlu testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
